porsche rwb 911 Q&A Review

What makes RWB Porsche so special?

The RWB cars are the product of Akira Nakai’s singular vision. He’s great at capturing — and amplifying — the visual essence of professional racing 911s of the 1980s and 1990s. The RWB look evokes the thing that my generation remembers and loves most about 911s. Yes, it involves cutting up the 911s that he modifies, but it’s fully respectful of the racing heritage of the air-cooled 911. Also, Nakai’s attention to detail in workmanship is right up at the top. The modifications are very well done and well-built. It’s honestly very similar to how Singer captures the essence of the 1960s/1970s rally 911 look. I totally get the critique that these cars have stock mechanicals and are “all show and no go.” But many RWB owners have gone on to add real racing suspension and engine mods. The visuals are just a starting point. Thanks for the A2A.

What makes the Porsche 911 so iconic?

Imagine if Usain Bolt started his track career running backwards and not drinking any water during training. Obviously the critics gave him crap, but he was pretty decent at it. Then he became an international celebrity after winning the olympics, still not drinking water and running backwards. It’s a rough analogy, but that’s kinda what the 911 keeps doing. The less than ideal layout of the rear engine with rear wheel drive, makes for a car that puts a lot of onus on the driver to get the most out of it. If you get a chance to drive an older air cooled 911, you will immediately understand that the car comes with a learning curve. It is a hazing procedure that if you come out triumphant, you will learn to appreciate and respect. It’s not conventional and they keep perfecting their initial design to improve the performance, but there is still a basic Rear Engine - Rear Wheel drive layout in the 911 lineup that more or less tests your capabilities as a driver (assuming you turn off all the electronic safety stuff) As a side note, I don’t think it has anything to do with Porsche as a brand name. The success of companies like Ruf, Singer, RWB, Gemballa, Guntherwerks making their own versions of the 911, prove that the iconic power of the 911 as a platform outperforms even what Porsche itself can handle. There’s a reason why you can still get a fully functional 928 or 924 for the price of stock 993 wheels. The air cooled 911 is iconic because it just might be the most iconic fully manual and difficult to master sport car that has ever been mass produced all the way up to 1998.

Given an unlimited budget, which 5 production cars (past or present) would you have in your dream garage?

Oh yes here we go. Let’s go from most sane to most insane. My land yacht, would be the Novitec Rolls Royce Wraith. In addition to turning up the wick on the hulking V12, Novitec has also constructed custom wide fenders and redesigned front and rear fascias. It looks mental and serene at the same time. Next up would be ,my daily beater,, a McLaren 650S. I might opt for the convertible in this scenario, as hearing the high-strung V8 would be a nice plus. This car is comfortable enough to bruise every day, and come on…,butterfly doors,. Come on. Everyone needs a rally car. This would be my ,special occasion and rally car,. I’ve always loved the SLS AMG Black Series, and I have to have it on this list. Honestly, I would probably make any excuse to drive this car. We don’t need to review the specs, because this thing is an insane German monster. ,With gullwing doors yes please,. Obligatory Koenigsegg,. Why not? ,Special edition Agera R, would add the ski box even though I don’t ski., I don’t even know what niche this car would fill, but good lord do I love what those Swedes are doing. Did I say I needed an ,ultra insane car?, Here, have one. There are only six, and they retailed from the manufacturer for three million. What is it? It’s the McLaren P1 LM. Basically, take a Zonda R, turn it up to 11, give it a bigger wing, and make it road legal. It’s kinda insane. Combined secondary market value, - ~$4.7 million EDIT:, Other cars I would consider adding include the Porsche 918 Weissach, the Koenigsegg Regera, the McLaren 688 HS, and the Rolls Royce Phantom Metropolitan Edition. EDIT NO. 2: Ugh!, Can’t believe I forgot some of my favorite cars of yore. I would add to this list a RWB Porsche 911 (1985ish), the McLaren F1 LM, and a LBWorks GT-R. 11/12/2016: “10,000+ people were sent your answer in the Quora Digest.”, I think this is an accomplishment…I’m honored. Thanks for all the support! Cheers :)

How much would an RWB Porsche cost?

Are we talking about the financial cost, or the cost to your reputation? As Branden mentioned, financial is $100k plus donor. Your reputation will not recover. For $100K, you can do a vastly better things to a 911 than that.

What is this modification called on cars?

It's a new modify style of cars and usually we call it Wide body modification, not for aerodynamic but for show the style of the car. The most obvious characteristics of these body kit is they always use lots of ,rivet, to assemble it. There's several famous boy kit design company (or we should call them group) like the RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF (also know as RWB) which is famous in modify the old Porsche 911 (usually the 930 turbo, but now also modify the other old version of 911). Here's some works of the RWB. In the latest NEED FOR SPEED ™ Nakai-san, the founder of RWB, also bring the RWB body kit into the game and you now can drive a preety cool RWB Porshce in the game. Also there's other famous wide body kit maker like LB Performance(also know as ,Liberty walk,), The GT-R present by LB Performance is their famous work. And the Toyota GT-86 Present by the Rocket Bunny. Now more and more car was fitting with these kind of body kit, It will become more and more popular, I swear.

Can you put an aftermarket turbo into a Porsche 997 Carrera 4"?

Can you turn your desirable to used Porsche buyers (assuming no other mods) stock 997 into a Frankencar, unloved and unwanted by all? Certainly! But why not sell the Stock Porsche 997 Carrera 4, for the going market prices, and buy a Porsche turbo of the generation you want, for the going market price? Or just buy a new base model Carrera since all new Porsche 911s are turbos now. With labor cost on the high side of $75/hour, a complicated lengthy installation of a turbo kit into a Porsche NOT DESIGNED for a turbo kit will be costly labor hour wise, the car will be subjected to forces not envisioned by Porsche for a non-turbo, and the electronics, getting them to speak one language to work correctly may be time consuming. Porsche is the dream and vision of one man, packaged and sold by Madison Avenue to Americans as the ultimate German sports car, and it worked. Don’t mess with the dream by trying to add your initials to the Porsche 911 script: Turbo by… Unless your name or initials are Ruf, Singer, RWB, Magnus Walker or Kage, your mod will not enhance, but most certainly will destroy the resale value of your ride. The 5 Best Porsche Tuners in the World

What is your favorite car and why?

Oh boy…Oh boy oh boy oh boy. I cant wait to answer this one 1.)Mazda RX7 FD or FC (Drift Car) 2.) Next I would have to say a Porsche 911 993 (But with an RWB kit on it) (Race car) 3.) A Bentley Bentayga (Daily) 4.) 1965 Mustang (Weekend) 5.) GMC Sierra 2500hd All Terrain (Trailer carrier and second daily) ***1500 VIEWS You guys are awesome And this isint even my complete list.

Is a 1992 Porsche 911 Carerra a good car to buy for investment purposes?

Yes, the price for that particular generation has been increasing over the last 10 years, although it’s mostly on the 911 Turbo model instead of the more mainstream Carrera. This generation, called the 993, is the last generation to have an air cooled engine. The air cooled engine is considered unique for a 90s car because most cars have gone to using water cooled. When Porsche switched to water cooled, a lot of 911 fans were very angry about it because they considered it as a form of legacy loss. Lately, there has been a trend of converting a standard 911 into a modification style called RWB. This makes the ones in original condition more rare and therefore, increase the demand. With more of them being converted to RWB, expect the price of the original ones to rise up. There is a lot of Porsche collectors who are willing to get a 993 in original condition.
