Why is the Toyota FJ Cruiser so Expensive? There is so much to write down that most people will get bored if I drag on so I’ll keep it short. 1: the resale value on some is more than they cost brand new… because… 1:b they have been discontinued, not because they were a bad vehicle or they were not selling by any means, they were still selling pretty well. 2: they were the most capable off the lot stock OEM 4x4 off-road machine during their production run. Bar non…. That’s bar none, not Jeep, not hummer, not Land Rover… bar none. 3: they are the only vehicle to be rated by their owners as more dependable, reliable, fun, capable, bullet proof than the Toyota Tacoma. (I own a Tacoma and Tacoma was/is the #1 before.) this is by OWNERS, not biased or paid articles or studies indirectly sponsored by any auto industry manufacturer. From the Horse’s mouth, not the horses’ asses. 4: it’s a throwback homage to the FJ40 landcrusier of the sixties and seventies, which were the legendary most capable off road vehicles (for consumers) ever built…ever. The legendary 70 degree (with modification) incline conqueror of off-road, which many humans can’t even conquer walking. =45 degrees the angle of this “7” is about 60 degrees, and the angle of either half of this “V” is about 70 degrees. 5: those that have them, you have to pry it away from them, they will not give them up. 6: they’re ugly! But it grows on you until you think it’s a bad ass monster you have a saddle on. Even without any mods. 7: there’s an FJ that has a propane tank explode inside of the cabin and caught fire but was still drivable, and unbelievable, repaired to near perfection. 8: watch some YouTube videos about them. You’ll say jeeps and Hummers can suck your … well let’s not get that cocky. 9: it has no carpeted upholstery, I mean the damn thing has rubber floors and dash so you can hose the mud off the inside, the inside is waterproof! What other vehicle boasts, let alone be able to do, that! To sum it up, it is an owner’s dream, reliable and dependable, tough, fun, capable, safe, modifiable, unique, and all around impressive suv.
I liked the first year, the special edition was the Toyota Racing Division TRD model, metallic black all over, the only TRD FJ made. They also filmed a series about it entering off-road races sponsored by Toyota during next year. Awesomel. But, the first year model, maybe into the 2008 MY, had a weak front end design, causing unwanted bending of the hood front fender area. It was re-engineered and old ones fixed under warranty. Also, the oil filter was right on top of the engine. didn’t have to go through the skid plates to get to it for an oil change. Then they dumbed it down by moving the filter under the engine for later years models. Next highlight was the 2012 Trail Teams in Guards Red, with matching interior. What a looker! Shoulda had a roof rack headlight front rack wind deflector system, but the NHTSA mumbled something which made Toyota nervous, so they didn’t install it. lotsa cheap wind deflector/lights packages hit ebay for a few years. 2013, the CRAWL control was introduced, the best feature ever for the Cruiser. 2014, the FJ Trail Teams Special edition came with a reservoir oil damping system for the rear shocks, so they could bounce longer without overheating. I had the 2007 TRD version, the 2010 Trail Teams edition, the 2012 Trail Teams edition, and a regular 2014 edition with the CRAWL Control. So I liked them all. The 2012 rear view mirror reverse camera was a godsend to that pillbox gunslit visibility! And i wished for one of the professional FJ convertible conversions.
It drinks fuel and its not aerodynamic but you dont buy that vehicle thinking it’ll be a sports car plus the interior is impractical, the toyota 4runner is much cheaper second hand and has better seating for the rear passengers.
The letters FJ in the Toyota FJ Cruiser are a throwback to the name of Toyota’s popular FJ-40 from 1961. So what did FJ mean back in 1961? F is for the gas powered F-series engine. Diesel variants were given the B code, so a diesel was a BJ, which was later called a Landcruiser. J is up for debate. J can be used for “Jeep” or it could be for the J-type chassis used. Even Toyota doesn’t seem to help clarify. Either way, the modern FJ name is a throwback to the classic model.
A car? The fj cruiser is a truck. Something similar would be the 4 door Jeep wrangler.
There’s a high demand for them, simple as that. They’ve been out of production since the 2017 model year and they remain popular. With all the quirks and features (like three windshield wiper blades), it’s a no-brainer.
I like mine very much, however the fuel economy in local driving is poor. Teenagers frequently use my back seat, no problem and I think if I needed to access a child seat the unique doors would make that easier than if it had conventional doors. I wish it had a small V8 option, a Diesel option I think would have been popular too. Thicker than average front pillars by the windshield are a minor visibility hassle, the near vertical windshields get broken by stones pretty easily. I see it as the only recent Toyota with interesting (not bland) styling and it came in actual vivid, vibrant colors, no longer an option on most cars, especially from Toyota. complaints, the top of dash clock and temperature gauge is not legible in daylight, it should be brighter or shadowed by a cover as in some other cars.
Only in the sense that the FJ shared a platform with the Prado, at the low end of the Land Cruiser range; and since the Prado was not sold in the States, the FJ is wholly different from any Land Cruiser offered there.
Short answer: Much like the Jeep Wrangler, the appeal of the FJ is image more than substance. If consumers were being 100% logical, the vehicle probably wouldn't sell. Longer answer: - The FJ and Wrangler are both adept off-road vehicles, so they're a good choice for people that like to relax in the deep wilderness, like to drive places others can't go, etc. - The FJ and Wrangler both have a rough-and-tumble image However, here's what I don't get: You can go just about anywhere you want to go with a small pickup. It's not as if the Wrangler and/or FJ are the only vehicles you can buy that go off-road. A small pickup has a bed, which means you can use it to haul things. They're also rated to tow more, so you can use your little truck to bring your ATV with you just in case you can't drive where you want to. Generally speaking, small trucks get the same kind of gas mileage that Wranglers and FJs get. Small trucks are cheaper to insure, safer, and typically less expensive In other words, ,buying a little pickup makes a hell of a lot more sense than buying a Wrangler or FJ,. Still, you can't do this in anything but a short wheelbase 4x4: and maybe that's the point.
