So why bother to own them in the first place?
In some place, taxi is an executive transport, it meant to be luxurious. For example, the Japanese consider their taxi to be luxurious mode of transport. Their drivers wear very prim and proper uniform and gloves (it’s Japanese thing), and the fare is expensive. They drive Japanese luxury car Toyota Crown, Nissan Cefiro / Bluebird, and its derivatives. In Indonesia, there are low-end and high-end taxis. The low-end one typically uses Indian-designed Honda Mobilio or Toyota Yaris Sedan (Vios or Belta in some places). The high-end one uses executive sedans like Toyota Camry or Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Toyota Alphard. I even saw BMW 5 series taxi, I’d rather drive the car and let the taxi driver sit in the passenger seat. I understand that people think of the Mercs as expensive to maintain, but they do last very long. Some models like the year 2000s’ W203 C-Class are facing quality problems, unlike the 1990s W124’s E-Class reliable reputation. When they do last long, they’ll feel ageless. So taxi companies expect to run them for about 10 to 15 years, while the usual ones lasts for about a good 5 to 8 years. To save costs further, the Mercs are usually diesel engined.
I think it is a brave move by the company. They were the first one to launch a luxury MPV in India. If you remember they had launched R Class which failed terribly. So this is their second try. They also made other brave move by launching E class based avant in our country. But all of this avant thing was started by Audi when they launched performance avant RS6 avant in India and after that Volvo launched V90 cross country. So what I think is car manufacturers are ready to experiment in our market, which they were afraid of before. I would rather buy this one instead of an S class. It may have less features but it has got presence man!! And it is a cheaper too!! However I would love if they launch bigger and more powerful diesel, because 2 liter 4 cylinder unit is quite small for this big car. It may sound a bit expensive at first, but when you look at it as a whole package, it makes sense to have luxury MPVs in our country too. Now I’m looking for Toyota to launch their luxury MPVs, the like of Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. I have had travelled in an Alphard when I went to Indonesia. I loved them totally.

In the Philippines the streets are littered with diesel minivans. Part of the reason you don’t see diesel powered minivans in the USA is because diesel vehicles needs costly scr systems that would easily push the price of a minivan north of $50,000US. …and in the USA $50,000 minivans are simply not going to fly. In Asian countries they like people haulers larger the better. Toyota makes the Innova which is a smallish minivan and they make the Hiace which is a bit larger, there’s even a more luxury van called the Alphard which would cost $70,000. Most would in USA would rather buy a large pickup or SUV for that kind of money before buying a minivan.
Indonesia has a love for minivans. You get to see it everywhere you go. It can be dated back in the late 70s when Toyota decided to modify the Kijang pickup into a minivan. It was a huge success. Back then, most people had more than 3 children, so they need a 3 seater car that can carry the whole family, with motorcycles being the private vehicles. 3 decades later, minivans are still the favorite choice among Indonesian consumers. Volkswagen was so enthusiastic about Indonesia’s minivan sales that it opened a factory in Indonesia just for making the Touran minivan. Some of Southeast Asia’s most popular minivans were/are manufactured in Indonesia. This year, Chinese manufacturer Wuling introduced the brand to Indonesian market with its minivan model. Recently, Toyota Avanza holds the title for the best selling car, succeeding the Toyota Kijang’s record. (The Toyota Kijang was the best selling car throughout the 20th century.) (Toyota Avanza is currently the best selling car, surpassing the Kijang.) (Subcompact mpv is the most popular segment.) (Isuzu Panther was a heavy rival of the Kijang. Known for its torqy diesel engine, it attracts many fans.) (The Toyota Alphard is a popular car among the upper class society. Often driven by private chauffeur.) Minivans are often used as public transportations. The color represents the route they go. They are called “angkot”, meaning “carry”, derived from Suzuki Carry, which is the most popular model among the angkots.
You want to open tour and travel agency and in need of vehicle for it the route is from manila to rural areas with not so good roads but beautiful place and the best choice is to use vans or minibus there is two choices: the fancy toyota alphard… comfort, luxury, prestige, technologies, best onboard entertainment, etc or utilitarian toyota hiace… rugged suspension, flat, narrow and hard seat, minimum entertainment, noisy and vibrating diesel engine, etc alphard is better in any ways, but why do every tour agency uses hiace?
