This was my car which was sold about 3yrs ago for about 0000AUD 1987 Toyota Camry, SV21 4cyl… http://goo.gl/fb/qkEwG
I've done that before where someone local sold us a 1991 SV21 model Toyota Camry for $500 AUD where they had a leaky drain plug then they cooked the engine wiring loom & the alternator as the engine locked up as it ran out of oil & overheated,it was able to be restarted then driven onto a car trailer but. For whatever reason they bolted a Japanese imported 2 litre 3S-FE motor into it & they couldn't get it started, they even took it to an auto electrician who couldn't get it running, the engine would attempt to start but then just stall. We towed it back to my parents place & I found some.of the fuel injector wiring harness was partially shorted out which I repaired, the big find & I don't know why an Auto electrician didn't pick this up because the vacuum control for the power steering rack was smashed off as it was plastic so I plugged the hose off then the engine started,so it had an air leak after the airflow meter. So I got the engine running but the alternator wasn't charging the battery because the voltage regulator, etc was fried,I had just recently upgraded the 70 amp alternator in my Nissan RB30DE powered Holden VL Commodore to 85 amps using the guts out of a 3.8 litre Holden (Buick) LN3 V6 Bosch alternator in the 70 amp Bosch housing in the VL Commodore so I used the 70 amp guts (diode pack, stator & rotor),a new voltage regulator, slip rings & ball bearings in the Buick V6 Bosch alternator housing. The housing had to be “clocked” differently so that the voltage regulator would face up & away from the exhaust manifold & we modified the Toyota adjusting bracket slightly to allow it to fit the 85 amp housing so the alternator which came out of a Holden was almost a straight bolt in fit into a Toyota Camry. So we got the alternator working then my dad got it registered,it became a spare runaround car,we rebuilt the old motor & fitted it into my youngest brothers 1987 model Toyota Camry (another SV21 model) which he bought for $500 AUD off an old work colleague which had a smoky engine in it. It was registered until my second youngest brother borrowed the car,ran an orange light & someone plowed into the side of the car causing it to become a write off so we scrapped it !
Well,my brother bought a 1987 SV21 Toyota Camry with that sort of mileage on it,the engine also burned some oil & he only paid $500 AUD for it which was for a car which had 12 months registration on it. So,the seller basically sold him the registration & gave him the car when it was something like 17 years old. I paid $1500 AUD for a car which was in the same condition in 2002 & had 12 months registration on it,it had 300,000 kilometres on the odometer.
How much can you afford to pay for it ? My youngest brother bought a smoky 1987 model SV21 Toyota Camry for $500 AUD & it needed an engine rebuild & rust cut out of it,it all depends upon what you're prepared to do to it,he paid for 12 months worth of registration & nothing for the car. You might be able to find an old car with no rust in it & a decent engine for that price,my second youngest brother drove a 1996 model Hyundai Excel ( aka Accent) around which was like that & it had done over 300,000 kilometres (180,000 miles),it was only worth that much when he got rid of it after upgrading to a 2000 model Hyundai Elantra !
Yes,my dad bought a 1991 model Toyota Camry (SV21) off people that we knew for $500 AUD & they used exhaust gasket material for the drain plug washer, the point is it wasn't a very good sealing washer & they lost all of the oil out of the engine,it locked up & fried the voltage regulator in the alternator, alternator stator, etc & it melted parts of the fuel injector wiring loom which I had to repair, they did drive it onto the back of a truck after engine had cooled down & unlocked itself so I'd say it did affect the drive belts. They bolted a Japanese import motor into it & even after they took it to an auto electrician they couldn't get it going. I built another alternator for it & replace the plastic vacuum port part of the power steering rack as it was also controlled by inlet manifold vacuum & it was all broken, there was a major air leak there which is why the engine wouldn't start. So my dad got it registered & we drove it as a spare runaround car. We were also given the old engine which we rebuilt & my brother put it his 1987 model Toyota Camry SV21 !
