toyota camry undercarriage Q&A Review

Which is the best car brand in the world?

My favorite brand, overall, would have to be Toyota. I’ve owned many Toyotas over the years - my 1st being the beautiful - and (then) ,very ,edgy 1986 Celica - when I was 19. It was a positively gorgeous machine - with a stunning Coke-bottle shape and a wraparound rear window (that was later copied by the Ford Probe - albeit not as successfully) and looked exactly like this - minus the alloys & rear spoiler: I loved that car. And it still looks good today! But I digress. My friends & I called this car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because it literally repaired itself! I had many adventures in that car and it provided years of reliable service. But more than that… Toyota doesn’t reinvent the wheel with each new model year. They utilize proven components & mechanicals that they ,know ,are tried & true. I’ve also been told (by more than 1 credible source) that Toyota sheet metal is actually ,thicker ,than that on other marques (at least at one time). They also tend to over-build their products. My 2003 Highlander was often parked on a gravel driveway so undercarriage rust became an issue in later years. One day I heard a loud knocking sound from beneath the car. I pulled off (!) what appeared to be a meticulously-crafted, bell-shaped device that was quite heavy. It looked pretty businesslike so I asked my mechanic who told me it was a counterweight whose purpose was to eliminate vibration in the exhaust system. Who pays this kind of mindful attention to details?!? Toyota. That’s who. Though, to be candid, I think today’s Toyotas are butt-ugly & there’s not one in which I’m even remotely interested. And, if you’ve read the December, 2017 issue of Motor Trend (who many – including me – regard is the uncontested automotive authority), you already know that the new-for-2018 Accord runs circles around the new-for-2018 Camry. First time in 35 years. I also love Mazdas - though I’ve only owned 1 (a used 1993 626 SE with a V6) so my personal experience is limited. But Mazda’s one of - if not the only - mainstream automaker who engineers, designs and builds affordable cars for those of us who are still passionate about driving. Even their damn ,van ,was available with a manual trans! And they’re gorgeous. I mean…can you ,name ,another affordable mainstream sedan that looks like ,this? …neither can I.

How can you best protect your car from salt damage while living in snowy areas?

Here's what we did to protect my poor California-Purchased Toyota Camry from the salt/rust damage potential when we moved to North Dakota: Took it in to the dealership to get the, undercarriage treated with anti-rust ,magical spray of some kind (Sorry, I really don't know what it's called - I've tried googling it, but that brings up some manly car forums that are beyond me. Try calling local service shops/dealerships for your car. This was pretty cheap, and they can tell you how often it should be redone) Got, plastic floor covers for protecting the carpet,. Snow/Mud/Salt/Muck = VERY disgusting carpets quickly. Got a, car wash at least twice per month, (This is tricky in cold, snowy places, but it CAN be done. If I could do it in North Dakota's subzero winters, I feel it can be done anywhere. The trick is timing. Do it early on a "warmer" sunny-ish day so you have less chance of your car freezing shut - doors, windows, etc). ANY sunny or warmer day, get the car washed. Yes, it'll get dirty five seconds later as you drive down the snowy/icy/slushy roads, but it'll take off the stuff sitting on there too. Made use of car wax,. Seriously. It's not just for Porsches. This helped a LOT. Prayed to the car gods,, since we had no garage and the car was just out in the elements at all times. I think this helped. The Camry emerged from our cold four year sojourn with just one small rust spot near the back license plate. Winner! (Here's a manly link for aftermarket anti-rust protection http://www.tundratalk.net/forums/tundra-general-discussion/63222-aftermarket-anti-rust-spray-undercarriage.html) (Here too: http://www.askmen.com/cars/keywords/rust-proofing.html) And a link about this very topic: http://bwmotorworks.com/blog/secrets-to-protecting-your-car-from-road-salt-damage/

Did you ever drive your car for more than 15 years as an everyday driver? If so, what was the make and model?

I did not personally drive my car for more than 15 years, but it was a hand-me-down from my mother, so the two of us combined had driven it daily for about 17 years. We had a 1998 Honda Accord. Man, that car had seen some things! I named her Doe not long after I acquired the car from my mother because I hit a deer after work one night. No major damage and I was okay after the incident- the hood and a headlight needed to be replaced. We called the police, but not the insurance company because of the minimal damage. My little Doe got me through some rough weather. I had a few repairs done during my time with the Accord. I live in central New York so our winters take a hard toll on the undercarriage of cars. My mother delivered pizza in that car, and I ended up delivering prescriptions in that car as well. With well over 100k miles some repairs are expected. At one point, during the winter I was delivering prescriptions, the battery died in a customer’s driveway- and that spring the exhaust pipe fell off while I was driving. The alternator was also replaced, both tie-rods, and the right upper control arm. Overall, I loved my ’98 Accord and would have kept driving it- but the repairs started to get too expensive. Now I own a 2008 Toyota Camry, but I miss my Accord (good thing my husband bought a ’12 Accord when he needed a new car too!).

Should I buy a 2004 Toyota Camry with a 82K mileage now?

It is very cheap and boring vehicle. Go visit MOT and just ask to check everything they can - exhaust, suspension wear, springs, dampers, undercarriage rust. If all is fine, no leaks, no broken parts, no holes. Then why not. You can never be sure that you get good used vehicle. But 1000 is so little it doesn’t really matter.

How many miles does a Toyota Camry last?

Mechanically solid cars if you remove the salt and grime the undercarriage often enough. Electrically theyre crap. Shit happens at the 3 year mark and you need to be lucky to dodge the expensive issues. Hope they solve those issues. The target audience of Toyota isn't exactly interested in maintanance plans or repairs.

Why do engineers prefer front-wheel drive for small cars?

A question after my own heart! The simple answer is it is cheaper to offer FWD. And not just for smaller 4-wheelers - the Honda Accord, Nissan Teana, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata are all in the large car bracket, having wheelbases in the 2700 mm + - range. And all have/had FWD. It is gross engineering, but great thrift. FWDers have the drive -train & undercarriage combined in a nice compact aggregate which lends itself well to mass production. It is that simple. The FWD trend started long ago, in the 1920’s & 30’s, but became a best seller with Alec Issigonis’ Mini, which firmly established this drive train as the way to the future. And so it is - but only for wheelbases upto about 2300/2400mm, putting it firmly in hatch-back territory. It is when you start employing FWD in large cars that it starts to look ludicrous. The Americans wanted to go one better than the Europeans, and they used FWD in their traditional Goliaths of the late 60’s & early 70’s - the Cadillac Eldorado & Olds Toronado come to mind. Both with the usual laid-back 7-litre V-8s, 20 ft length & kerb weights of 2 tons or more! Mercifully this aberration had a short life, with both having poor box office success. Engineering-wise, dynamic stresses (both steering-induced & engine-torque-at-the- wheels induced) on the undercarriage & suspension components is greater in FWDers than in RWDers. In RWD cars the stresses are much better distributed, with only the steering induced stresses going to the front wheels & suspension. Whereas the engine torque induced stresses are confined to the rear wheels & suspension. And the larger the car & its wheelbase, the greater are the stresses in FWDers - specially on steep, hilly hairpins taken at full steering lock and maximum allowable throttle!

Is a 2001 Toyota Camry with 141,000 miles worth purchasing in 2020?

You did not tell us: How much? Your budget? Condition of the car. Well kept or keeps having problems, undercarriage severely attacked by road salt? When such basic obviously essential information is not provided the question is a waste of bandwidth as is this reply.

What are things to look for when I rust proof my vehicle?

"2015 Nissan Rogue, a 2009 Ford Taurus, and a 2003 Toyota Camry." Rustproofing basically involves creating a barrier on vulnerable surfaces of the car and many products have been used successfully including motor oil and melted Vaseline. Just about all modern cars will have enough access holes so drilling shouldn't be necessary except under special circumstances. A shop will be able to tell you why they need to drill, if they do. There is generally no guarantee on old cars, and only dealers will offer one if you purchase the option with a new car, but that will be considerably more expensive than going to a local shop. There are franchises offering the service such as Rust Check but most service garages in a rust-prone area will also offer the service. Just Google it. The process involves treating, by way of spraying the treatment fluid, all areas known to be prone to rusting due to road salt. Some of those areas include the full undercarriage, inner surfaces of the hood and trunk lid, wheel wells, and inner door panels and rocker panels. The treatment is best followed up with an annual inspection which you can do at an oil change by looking around the undercarriage and around the door sill. The prices can vary quite a bit but is usually under $150-$200 here in Quebec so Ontario or Michigan should be similar. Follow-up touch-up applications should be much cheaper. The Camry should be treated if the rust hasn't compromised the car's structural integrity; any mechanic should be able to advise you of that with a simple walk-around inspection while on a lift. The Taurus and Rogue will benefit most from the service before serious corrosion forms. Some people are of the opinion that rustproofing is no longer required on newer cars, but living in rust-prone areas, we know all cars will eventually rust and rustproofing is cheap insurance against corrosion that absolutely works. It also keeps the car looking presentable over its functional life.

The heat shield on my 2003 Toyota Camry rusted and part of it fell off. Can I get it welded back or do I just need to cut it off?

I recommend that you replace it, whichever heat shield it may be, as heat shields fulfill a very important purpose. Leaving it broken, or off, will result in heat damage to whatever component, or section of undercarriage (and interior) not protected.

Are BMWs notoriously overrated because they are ultimately expensive to maintain and unreliable?

No more so than say a Toyota or Honda or for any other manufacturer. Don’t believe me, then look up the procedure for changing a Heater Core in a Toyota Corolla or a Camry. And don’t be shocked when you find out that the Chilton Billing and Servicing Manual states that it is a 42 Hour Repair, requiring you to strip the interior down to Bare Metal including the Dash Panel and Carpet to Access the Heater Core. The Main Expense with BMW’s is that the Entire Undercarriage is Hidden by Protective Covers that have to be removed before any work can proceed. This is Also a Godsend for mechanics as nothing will be covered in Rust Proofing or Road Grime.
