My son will turn 15 next year, not close to becoming a new college student but as a car guy I think I might give you some advice. If you don’t want to spend big money then buy a car of a Japanese make. Toyota would do. If the situation is different - BMW, Audi and Mercedes are pretty much the same, just choose what you like most. I`ve driven Toyota camry for more then 5 years and I would say that it was one of the best cars I`ve ever tried in my entire life. It was affordable to repair, it was pretty cheap to buy. XV30 and XV40 Camrys were definitely the best, if you can, try to find one with less than 80 thousand miles of mileage. They’re pretty cheap and even if it will need to be repaired, it’s not gonna cost a fortune. If you’re gonna buy a new one, probably some Honda under 20,000$ will do or a Toyota Corolla. I don`t like Fords as they`re not really comfortable to drive, at least not as comfortable as a Toyota.
"Models" could be construed as a number of different things, but I suppose regardless of how you phrase it, the Camry ,does, end up with a lot of "models". This mostly has to do with the connotations built around the name itself and partially the engineering behind the vehicle. Universally around the automotive world, the Camry is virtually synonymous with a reliable, capable, reasonably priced mid-sized sedan, so everyone flocks to them. At the same time, not everyone has the same needs, thus Toyota has to cater to a wide range of requirements for it to retain this massive chunk of its segment's market. This is why you'll see an AWD version of the XV40 Camry in Asia and nowhere else, simply because there's a significant need or desire for them there, and only there. This is mainly why the Camry nameplate hasn't been phased out yet. The underpinnings of the original Celica Camry have utterly no semblance to the newest XV50 Camry, yet they both share the same model name. Unlike GM, who has been playing hot potato with their compact car names (take the Cobalt, Cruze, and Cavalier for example), the Camry nameplate has been constantly recycled, since its a name consumers recognize, and recognize for good reasons. Conversely a lot of people also can recognize the value of the Camry's platform, even if they don't necessarily want a Camry. In Australasian market, they created the Toyota Aurion for the XV40 generation, which was virtually identical to the equivalent Camry, save for cosmetics. In Australia, the Avalon sales were miserable, thus Toyota Australia redesigned the Camry with a better focus on the Australian public's interests as a substitute. Japanese officials called it something like a "prestige Camry", even though the redesign was done on a budget and not much was changed. To differentiate the Aurion from the Camry in some markets, the Camry was only offered with the I4, whereas the Aurion was exclusively offered with the V6. Similarly, the first generation of the Lexus ES350 was also based on the XV40 Camry. It's essentially a more up-market, luxurious derivative of the V6 Camry with a lot more equipment as standard. The ES350 is perfect for people who don't want to stray from their roots as Camry owners, yet want to jump into the entry-level luxury car market. And on top of this, there are some international markets where the name was changed (Vienta, Scepter, Vista) and other places where it was sold under a different badge (Daihatsu Altis, Holden Apollo), though this was mostly for marketing and political reasons. Between the V20 and V30 generations of the Camry, Toyota's marketing staff found a large difference in demands between the International and Japanese markets, so the V30 generation became a Japan-only affair, and the XV10 was born for everywhere else. From there, Japan's special Camry continued up to the V50 generation, before the narrow-body design was found to overlap with other models that were getting progressively bigger (*cough*Corolla*cough*) and discontinued. The early generations of the widebody Camrys existed in Japan, but they never sold as well as they did elsewhere. For the XV20 generation, you could only get a stationwagon based on the Camry called the Mark II Qualis, or buy the rebadged Daihatsu Altis, but not a Camry as most people know it. The whole "different markets" point is really critical, and its why there's so many different trims as well. Each market has a different set of trims, even if there usually are only 4-6 a piece. They're all tweaked to suit the needs of each region, thus why in North America, you don't get Asia's "G Dignis" or Australia's "Altise" or India's "W1" or the Middle East's "GLX" or Russia's - I can't type Cyrillic, so you'll just have to trust me on that part. The market differences are actually more significant with other nameplates like the Corolla and Matrix, but the Camry certainly has its own share of family reunion wackiness. I could go on and on about the millions of different market-specific trims, pieces of equipment, and powertrain options (like the Hybrid, which is almost considered a different car at this point), but if you're still interested and I haven't bored you to death already, you can always do a little Googling to find what else catches your attention.
