volkswagen mr bean Q&A Review

10 years Challenge: How has your favourite or dream car changed in this 10 years between 2009-2019?

To be honest, There has none of the change, As i am a petrolhead and i like the raw feeling and uninterrupted connection between car and driver. Even though i havent driven my dream car. It certainly is MCLAREN F1. It is a space rocket, which quietly set up a world record which stood almost 2 decades and didnt made a fuss about it. (volkswagen are you listening and also without using quad turbos) Also it is the fastest naturally aspirated car till date and it was made in 1996, how awesome is that? A car with 3 seats and has 3 luggage spaces, 1 in the front and 2 on the sides. Its engine bay comes with gold plated foil. The car comes with titanium tool kit. Also only 106 cars were made, rowan atkinson (aka Mr. Bean) had one drove it daily covered 100k miles in it and sold for more than what he paid for. Its lead designer was Sir Gordon Murray, A person with 20 yrs of experience in mclaren formula1 racing team. It also claimed the first production road legal car to break 400kmph mark and using carbon fibre as a chassis material. Still a badass, as it produces just 627 hp while nowadays cars have over 1000hp,but handling degrades over 350kmph. I just cant fathom any other car doing such an amazing job even having the present age technology aids them. Hope it gives you the answer.

If you had three cars in your dream garage, which ones would they be?

Oh! dream garage… All these things for no extravagant reasons at all. Not too fast, not too flashy, just keeping it simple but iconic. I would really love to see a ,1977 Honda Civic ,in it. In my opinion, this car looks better (cuter) than the Mini at its time, though it too is iconic, but lets give the right to Mr. Bean with the Mini, I like the Civic more. I would also very happy should I see a ,1966 Volkswagen Beetle ,too. This car I would drive over long distances, just for the mere fun of it. Simply air cooled. And of course ,1996 BMW Z3,, because sometimes we want to have a fun car and feel the best you can ever be. Perhaps a 007 plate would go nice with it. While a ’95 Civic is also nice, I got that already covered with the ‘77. A Porsche 918 Spyder is also nice, but I’ll let it go.

What are some must read books for people in their 20s?

Many I would endorse are listed here, here are some not already listed: Animal, Vegitable, Miracle, - Barbara Kingsolver. A year of eating locally, and in low-impact, means raising their own food animals and growing crops, as well as preserving by canning and freezing, and seeking meals away from home which are also of locally produced food. Naturally, seasonal foods become staples, and much thought is given to what comes from far away and how commercial, agribusiness farming works, as opposed to small, organic, efforts. Many recipes, the majority of the text is by Kingsolver but her husband and one daughter contribute as well. A really delightful book. A more positive take on the same subject as ",The Omnivore's Dilemma," A Brief History of Time, - Stephen Hawking This is such a great book- it starts with a good cosmological joke, and contains only one equation. Its both a story of what is and how we know it, and what we don't know yet. We saw Hawking on his last visit to the Bay Area and he's inspiring. Robert Heinlein once wrote that any scientist who can't explain what they're doing, to a child, in 10 minutes, is a fraud. Hawking is not a fraud Incredible Victory, - Walter Lord The battle of Midway, as told by hundreds of survivors to Mr. Lord, 20 years later. He manages to tell the central parts of the story using quotes from people who were there, on both sides, the very best kind of history. In mid-1942 the Japanese Navy sets out to destroy the remaining US Pacific fleet. By capturing Midway, only 1200 miles from Oahu, they expect to provoke the US fleet into a final battle and defeat them. They don't know the US Navy is reading their radio codes. In a single day, and amid enormous cost in American lives from Midway and afloat, dive bombers from two US carriers sink all 4 Japanese carriers, though the Japanese manage to sink one American carrier and an accompanying destroyer. This is the beginning of the why Admiral Nimitz got a freeway named after him... This and ",A Night To Remember," are Lord's most famous books, It helps that the good guys win, but the waste and savagery of war are not glossed over. The Maltese Falcon, - Dashiel Hammett. A woman with a complex story visits the small detective agency of Sam Spade and Miles Archer. Archer agrees to watch over her case personally. He is found, shot dead, in the middle of that night, and Sam Spade has to figure out who killed him, and why, and do something about it. One character in a criminal association is gay, and Spade refers to him as a "fairy" in one scene. There are suggestions that another male member of the gang may be his lover, which are not treated as positive. Relationships outside of marriage, past and present are key parts of the plot. Archer's is not the only death. None the less, this is Hammett's finest and a terrific book about being an adult. My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives, - Gerald Durrell. British expatriates in Corfu during the 1930s. Durrell's mother is a widow, with a modest pension- Gerald (Gerry) is a pre-teen and already a naturalist in training and the youngest of the 4 children. Oldest brother Lawrence is already becoming A Famous Writer, middle sister and brother are teenagers, nowhere near as interesting as the animals Gerald collects or the locals he meets. "My Family and Other Animals" is my favorite, and we re-read it at least 2-3 times. The Periodic Table - Primo Levi - Levi trained as a chemist, growing up in Italy in the 1930s.When the war starts he ends up in the Resistance, is captured and shipped off to Auchwitz. He survives (working in the I. G. Farbin facility) and returns to Italy after the war. He becomes a paint and varnish chemist. Each story/chapter uses an element as the anchor for an episode, telling his life story from youth to age. Two stories are fictional, the one about lead and the one about carbon. He wrote them in a feverish burst along with his acclaimed "Survival In Auschwitz" in 1946. Its wonderful in translation, it must be even more fun in the original Italian. T,he Cuckoo’s Egg ,- Cliff Stoll. True story of a Berkeley grad student who discovers someone breaking into the computers he's supervising, ends up discovering a German who is hacking university and government computers for the KGB. Riveting and still timely. Includes a good chocolate chip cookie recipe The Survival of the Bark Canoe, - John McPhee. Profile of Henri Vallencourt, a young man who mastered Native American canoe building technology and built them to order in the 1970s. No pencils, no saws, just a hatchet and a "crooked knife", bought from the Hudson's Bay Company. They're easier to use and maintain than the sharpened beaver tooth they replaced, which is why HBC still sells them. The second half of the book is a canoe trip consisting of McPhee, the canoe maker, and some friends, through the Maine woods that Henry Thoreau traveled and wrote about 150 years ago. One half-page reference to Deliverance and jokes about banjo-playing rapists mean it can't be "G" but "PG" is very fair. The Wisdom of the Bones, - Walker & Shipman. Alan Walker did the formal, scientific, description of the most complete Homo erectus skeleton found to date, at Nariokatome, near Lake Turkana. He tells the story of the recovery of the remains, of the species Homo erectus, of what this particular skeleton tells us and what we can infer, generally, about Homo erectus. Like us. But not us. Shipman and Walker are married, the science and voice is his, the writing is hers. The Hominid Gang - ,Delta Willis. Willis has a different view of some of the same people and places that are the foundation for Walker and Shipman's book. Willis was writing while the Nariokatome aka Turkana Boy, the oldest and so-far best preserved was being un-earthed and pieced together. All Creatures Great and Small,, etc, etc. "James Herriot". Really good story telling, and yes, though based on real people, this is fiction. Some drinking, smoking, a fair number of complicated deliveries for sheep and some other farm animals. Based on the writer's experience but a work of fiction. In the real world, "Helen" wasn't the woman he married, for starters... The Fallen Man, - Tony Hillerman. Set on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, Hillerman's mysteries are solved by members of the Navajo Tribal Police. They're deeply rooted in place and time, and the Navajo and dominant cultures. In this story, a skeleton discovered over 1000 feet up a pinnacle which is both popular with climbers and a Navajo sacred place. It may be a rancher who disappeared on his honeymoon years before... Let's say a trillionaire philanthropist has ended world hunger using his own funds and resources. What would happen next after every hungry person in the world is given enough food to not starve anymore?

Well, if you are a trillionaire you are smart. You know perfectly well that the problem behind the world hunger is the subsidies, tariffs and back door protections that European and American farmers have and the capital behind the chain of value, not that the hungry people need to “,be fed,”. My bet for your money is to put it in bribing politicians in EU and US to dismantle the horrible system in place that has only one purpose: ,for a few giants of the food market in EU and US to live from the hunger of the world,. The problem is an economic problem and thus is related to ,means, of production and not production itself. And ,the most important means of production are the law and the capital. That’s how you become trillionaire: by knowing and manipulating law and by accumulating capital,. You can grow rice four times in a year in my country, Colombia. However, there are rice producers in Europe that can compete with the Magdalena River farmers. How they do it? By stiff tariffs for anything but a pittance for a few countries that are exempted (depending on how well they do not form part of a block of farming countries) and by diverting money into inefficient EU farmers. Europeans farmers should have 4 times the productivity of Colombians for their annual crop for being able to compete with a guy in a tropical region with no freezes and four crops per year. To have a 2 percent of their population toying with their farms they provoke hunger in the rest of the world. But that’s a narrow view: the truth is that the crux of the thing is the ,added value,. A pound of coffee costs U$2.45 and a kilogram of cocoa costs 1.91 dollars, put in New York docks. ICCO Daily Prices of Cocoa Beans A single shot of espresso at Starbucks costs 1.75 dollars. You can make 50 espresso shots with a pound of coffee! The Perfect Espresso Shot So, what would you do with your money, Mr. Trillionaire? First, notice that a trillion is nothing compared with the value of processed food products: think McDonalds, Unilever, or even the distributors of unprocessed food. Walmart moves around 1/6th of food in US. They move 300 billion, so ,the market is 1.8 trillion per year, and only the US, (300 million fat people) and only non-processed food. Source: ,Food market share grocery retailers United States, 2016 | Statistic Do you think Walmart is going to stop sucking this teat? I quote: There is a cruel irony at the heart of the current agricultural trading system. ,In rich countries, agriculture represents a small share of national income and employment, typically less than 2 percent of the total,. By contrast, agriculture accounts for 17 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in middle-income countries, rising to 35 percent in the poorest countries. Agricultural exports exceed one-third of the total in almost half of all developing countries. Yet industrialized countries systematically use subsidies to skew the benefits of agricultural trade in their favor. Let me give you an example about cashew nuts, a thing that is not produced in quantity in the US and EU: A World Bank report concluded that Mozambique could earn between US $130 and $230 more for a ton of shelled cashews than for a ton of raw nuts. However, ,in 1995 the World Bank and IMF forced Mozambique to phase out the tax that it used to discourage the export of unprocessed cashews., As a result the cashew processing industry collapsed and 7000 Mozambican workers lost their jobs. After a long battle, in January 2001 Mozambique won the right to start protecting its cashew processing industry again. The EU had gone along with the World Bank's job-destroying policy Who do you think is behind these changes in policy? Yeah, you got it right: the fabric that makes a ton of money from processing cashews. The fact is that Western capitalist countries make money from hunger and this is a system. You have tariffs: Tariffs on agricultural goods in the EU and U.S. are four to five times those applied to manufactured goods, and peaks in excess of 100 percent,—for groundnuts in the U.S. and dairy produce in Europe, for example—are common. While the poorest African countries may not be able to produce an exportable surplus of dairy products, they could do so for beef, sugar, and cotton. Beef and sugar, however, are the most protected products in the EU, even more than dairy products. You have amazing controls that not even Volkswagen cars could (apparently) comply with: One type of food residue that has been monitored by JECFA is aflatoxins. Aflatoxins occur naturally in or on certain foods including processed nuts and dried fruit. Aflatoxins are toxic and their occurrence in food has been linked to the incidence of certain cancers. JECFA analysed the potential human health impact of aflatoxins and concluded that even if they insisted on ,halving the level of residue allowed on food this would only lead to approximately two fewer deaths per billion people per year in the EU,. Despite this, the European Union has chosen to demand that food entering the EU meets stricter standards than JECFA recommends and allows even less aflatoxins residue. World Bank research has shown that adhering to higher standards rather than sticking to Codex MRLs for aflatoxins could cost Africa $220 million a year, ,equating to a massive 47% of the trade of dried fruit and nuts alone,. You have subsidies: Despite the fact that European farming methods are expensive and African agricultural producers are often highly efficient, African farmers find it impossible to compete. The EU boosts its agricultural competitiveness through a complex web of policies called the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Through the CAP, Europe's farmers are given various support programs and large subsidies including producer subsidies, subsidies to processors, and export subsidies. These enable farmers to earn a high price for their products while consumers still pay reasonable prices in the shops. African governments simply cannot afford to give their farmers the same benefits as European farmers receive through the CAP. Subsidies to processors of tomatoes, peaches, pears, citrus fruits and dried fruits have increased recently by 75 million Euros, to 180 million Euros in 2001. There are many, many policies that you Mr. Trillionaire should dismantle.

Is there any story of a dead brand brought back to life and becomes a successful one again?

If this question was about a ,dying, brand being brought to life, there are plenty of good examples, from Apple to Volkswagen. But a ,dead, brand? As in finished, finito, extinct, six-feet-under dead? Let me give you the story of Britain’s iconic Mini, voted second most influential car of the 20th century (behind Ford’s Model T) in 1999 and pronounced deceased in 2000. ,A little bit of history To understand why the Mini was such an icon, you need to know why it was created in the first place. It was Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser who set things in motion in 1956 when he nationalized the Suez Canal, which was jointly controlled at the time by Britain and France. Neither country was particularly amused, and—along with Israel—invaded Egypt in a bid to topple Nasser and regain control of that arterial shipping route. Unfortunately for them, both the United States and the Soviet Union opposed the action, as did the United Nations. Faced with international condemnation, the three countries were forced to withdraw. Things got worse in a hurry for both Britain and France when Saudi Arabia cut off oil supplies to both countries as punishment for the invasion. Faced with shortages, the British government was forced into introducing fuel rationing. Most drivers were limited to just 12 gallons—or about a single tankful—,per month,. ,Time to think small There’s nothing quite like a crisis to spur innovation. Britons were suddenly interested in vehicles that sipped rather than guzzled on the oily stuff. Many of them switched to imported microcars—derisively termed “bubble cars” because of their looks—which were uncomfortable and underpowered. Most of the early bubble cars were built by former German aircraft factories that had been lying dormant since the Second World War. Some, like the Messerschmitt Kabineroller (literally “scooter with cabin”), had just a one-cylinder, two-stroke engine like a lawnmower. The Messerschmitt Kabineroller Another, the BMW Isetta, was built like a refrigerator…the entire front-end was the vehicle’s only door; you opened it and climbed in. The BMW Isetta This state of affairs didn’t sit very well with British Motor Corporation president Leonard Lord, who was famously quoted as saying: “God damn these bloody awful bubble cars. We must drive them out of the streets by designing a proper miniature car.” Lord’s instructions to his designers were as precise as they were demanding: the car had to have the “proper” number of wheels (four) and a “proper” four-stroke, four-cylinder engine. It could be no bigger than 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 4 feet in height. It should hold four passengers, plus have a little room for luggage. The man he put in charge of the team was talented engineer and designer Alec Issigonis, son of Greek refugees from Turkey. If anyone could deliver, it was Issigonis. He was the man who helped create the Morris Minor—the first British car to sell more than a million units. Issigonis, who would later be knighted, did indeed deliver. His creation was launched in August 1959 as the Morris Mini Minor, which in time would become famous as the Mini. Concept drawing of the first Mini The transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and incredibly compact dimensions revolutionized the industry. For such a small car, it felt surprisingly roomy, and safety considerations weren’t ignored either. It took a while for the Mini to catch on with the driving public, but as word spread of how good it was, demand began to surge. The Mini would go on to become the best-selling British car in history, with a production run of 5.3 million units. And it was certainly a British icon…Prince Charles learnt to drive in one, all four Beatles bought them, as did celebrities and royalty around the world. But perhaps this picture says it better than any other. Mr Bean and his famous car There were numerous upgrades made over the years, but the fundamental character and layout remained unchanged: the two-door model that rolled off the production line in 2000 didn’t look much different from the original 1959 car. ,End of the line Despite the success of the Mini, poor sales of other vehicles produced by the British Motor Corporation forced the company into a merger with other automakers in 1968. The Mini continued to be produced by the resulting conglomerate, British Leyland; and later by the company it evolved into, the Rover Group. BMW bought the struggling Rover in 1994, but despite pouring millions into the company, failed in its attempts to make it profitable. Finally, it gave up and sold the company off in pieces. The one thing BMW did hold on to was the Mini name. The original Mini, though, was done. The year was 2000, and a British icon had finally run out of gas. ,A new beginning BMW began work on a modern Mini soon after, and in 2001, it launched its own version of the classic. While the German model is technically unrelated to the old car, it retains the transverse four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive configuration and “bulldog” stance of the original. Signalling the move to a new era, BMW made another small change, going all uppercase to call the vehicle the MINI. The moves brought renewed interest to the brand, and sales were strong from the outset. In April 2007, BMW sold its millionth MINI—by a coincidence, roughly the same length of time that the classic Mini reached that sales milestone. Should current trends hold, the new MINI will outsell the old in the late 2030s. Do you foresee Volkswagen abandoning the Passat in the United States given the strong preference for crossovers instead of sedans?

It’s always a tough fight against city hall, a rising tide, and of course, Mr. Market. The days of the passenger car, sedan or coupe appear to be numbered. The whole auto patch is getting a make-over and traditional autos and their fossils power trains are headed for extinction. Ford is just about out of the “car” market entirely. Volvo is going 100% electric in 3 or 4 years. The SUV for better or worse—I’m not a fan of those boxy, boring jelly beans with less cargo space than a lot of sedan trunks—has taken over consumer transportation requirements. So, although i like the Passat and VW cars in general, and the GTI in particular, alas, don’t count on seeing many of them going forward.

Will you prefer a Mini Cooper 3 door as the only vehicle in your garage?

I think Car and Driver says it best: “The ,Mini Cooper, doesn't make much sense on a rational level, but it's plenty cute” 2021 Mini Cooper Review, Pricing, and Specs Second point going for it: It is not on the Consumer Reports list of the 10 least reliable 2020 Model Year Cars: 1. Chevrolet Traverse - Reliability: 18 10 Least Reliable Cars But a one-car person looking for a car that not only provides transportation, but also makes a statement about them-self; tends to be young, upwardly aspiring and in competition with their peers for the ever decreasing promotion positions. Now, with respect to how a Mini will slot yourself in that shark pool, how do you think you will be viewed as a Mini-Cooper owner? The Austin Mini-Cooper had many distinguished sporting accomplishments in racing, rallying, and even two movies featuring it. But what do people remember most about the Mini-Cooper? Rowan Atkinson in his comedy series as Mr. Bean, Mini-Cooper Owner. Do you want to be viewed as the Mr. Bean of your Office shark pool? I would not prefer the Mini Cooper 3 door as my sole source transportation.

What are you driving and what is your dream car?

Since I am only a college student and unemployed here in Philippines I drive my parents subcompact Honda City 2003 Manual Transmission. This is the car were I learned to drive. I know most of you are not familiar with this Honda because this not known worldwide. This is a economy car so it is built for point A to B, fuel efficiency, and practicality. It is a 17 year old family car and it has more than 100k in its odo so it already had a lot of repairs yet we maintained to its good condition. It already traveled more than 10 road trips since it was brand new. I am a car lover since I was a child when I started collecting hot wheels, matchbox, die cast. So here my dream cars or the cars I like to own someday. Most of my dream cars are classics and modern mixed in the Japanese, European, and American segment. I will not mention all. Porsche Carrera/911 - I am a fan of Porsche since I was a child. They are one of the legends in the sports car segment. What I like most is they maintained their design and purpose up to the current models. Whenever I see a Porsche in the street my head turns and always tell my parents I like to own someday. I had a lot of couple of die cast Porsche when I was a child. I know the price of a Porsche especially to third world countries is not a joke but is still my best favorite car and still hoping to own one. Mazda Mx5 NA and ND - For me, this is the most possible dream car I can acquire in a couple of years because of its price and one of the sports car that is affordable. Roadster is my most favorite type of car because I feel it's cool to own a two seater convertible car and I love driving in curvy roads. For me, the Mazda Mx5 NA and ND is the best roadster because of its affordability and it is well known to have the best handling in cornering. Also, all 4 generation released maintained the purpose of the Miata to be a fun affordable roadster. I fell in love with this because my grandfather used to own a NA and started knowing this car. Mini - Also one of my childhood favorite car. I fell in love with the car after watching Mr. Bean and Italian Job when I was a child. I find the design of a Mini cute and unique. What I mean is that the design of this car attracts a lot of audience whether you are a kid, teenager, adult, and senior. I remember I ate in a restaurant here in Manila, Philippines and there is a couples of Mini ranging from classics to the modern ones parked and they are a lot of people taking picture with the car from kids to adults. That just proves the appeal of the design of Mini is unique and attractive to a lot of audience. Another thing, they maintained their well known design and purpose of their brand. Also, they are one of the icon in the automotive industry and racing. You can use a Mini as a everyday car if you don't have a big family, track car, and show car whether it is a classic or modern Mini. I prefer the classics models when BMW is not owned by Mini. Volkswagen Classics (Beetle, Golf, Kombi) - I fell in love with the Volkwagen after watching Herbie and having a VW Beetle and Kombi die cast. I like the Beetle and Kombi mainly because of its timeless design. I fell in love with Golf MK1 after watching a show in Discovery Turbo that restoring a Gold MK1 and they transformed into a sports car and started searching the capabilities of a Golf in the internet. I find also find the design of a a Golf MK1 unique. BMW - One of my favourites since I was a child after I fell in love seeing a Z4. I am a fan of German cars but for me BMW is the best among its competitors because of its combination cool design, luxury, and fun to drive cars. All of their from their low end 1 series up to their high end cars the purpose of owning a BMW is there. Like what I said, the Z4 e85 is the reason why I love BMW and became more curious to this brand as I grew up. My favorite or dream BMW is the Z4 e85, M3 e30, 6 series e24, 2002. Suzuki Jimny I am also a fan of Defender, G Wagon, Land Cruiser, and Wrangler but my most favorite 4x4 car is the Jimny. The Jimny proves to be a easy and reliable to use off road vehicle. It is small but terrible. You can use it in the city, dessert, and forest. Datsun/Fairlady Z - My most favorite classic JDM. I fell in love this car after watching Wangan and playing Midnight Club in the arcade. The design its timeless and I am sure this classic can compete with the modern ones in its segment Toyota Celica A20 - I love this classic because of its timeless design and have a resemblance of a Mustang. Many car enthusiasts said that this Celica is the Japanese version of the Mustang.

Why was the Chevy Corvair so problematic?

Oh , the many conversations on this topic! I desperately want a Corvair, but I haven’t been able to find one that was salvageable with my modest resources that was within my price range. The rear suspension of the original 1960 Chevrolet Corvair was pretty much identical to the Volkswagen Beetle. The Corvair was heavier, longer, and had more power. It was a type of suspension that the conventional driver in the Corvair’s target market was not accustomed to. So, some of the problem was drivers who just didn’t know how to handle that type of car. It is true that GM should have applied more testing and put some amateurs behind the wheel. Not only did professional drivers not have any problems with that car, but they loved it. The bean counters at GM also took away the anti-sway bar that was intended for it because of production costs. That would have mitigated most of the oversteer problems. By the 1963 model year, GM had modified the rear suspension and made the car more conventionally drive-able. While Mr. Nader’s book suggested that just sitting in the car was akin to putting a loaded gun to your head, in 1965 the death rate for that car was less than six people per 100 million miles driven in the United States. In 2016, with our much more sophisticated, super-safe cars, the national average was over twice that. Here is a pretty cool video of attempts to wreck a Corvair, kinda: …and here’s a video that does a good job summing up the Corvair situation:
