volkswagen jetta radiator Q&A Review

How can someone find the right color paint for touching up their car?

As in Blair’s answer, your paint code will help lead you to what paint to use on your car. Some vehicles have both a paint code and a trim code. It depends on the manufacturer of the car. Just to make things more interesting, the car maker’s name for the paint color may not be the same as the paint maker’s name for the color. In situations like this, go by the paint code, then compare the paint can cap or paint pen patch to your car. There is very little likelihood of the new paint being an exact match to your car, but it should be close enough that a little feathering should make it blend in nicely. Different car makers will hide the paint and trim codes in odd, inexplicable places. Most cars have a tag inside the driver’s door either on the frame or on the door itself. With door tags, the paint code is usually near a bottom corner of the tag. My old 98 Jetta has the tag in the trunk, under the carpet, in the spare tire well, under the spare tire. Apparently Volkswagen was embarrassed that the best they could do with that car was LA9B, “Cool White,” which is actually a warm white, and they thought that if they hid the tag well enough I would never know, because you certainly can’t tell by looking at it. Many GM cars have it in the glove compartment on the inside of the door. Sometimes, if your car’s color is sufficiently distinctive, you can go to an auto parts store and check the book. The touch up paint book usually has colored references under a specific brand name and model year and you can sometimes find your color just by comparison. My 2003 Jetta is clearly “Indigo Blue Pearl,” which is the uncontested ugliest shade of blue that Volkswagen has managed to come up with: extra-dark Navy, with just enough of a hint of purple to make it look like something went wrong when they mixed the paint. Frustratingly, the paint reference books don’t go back many model years. Apparently, they think that the older a car is, the less likely it is to need a paint job. Most Asian cars will have the paint code in the door jamb, though Mazda, Subaru, and Hyundai like to occasionally hide it under the hood, just to keep you on your toes. Recent Chrysler products (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram) will have the code on the door jamb. Some older ones (add Plymouth to the list) may have it under the hood, all the way up on the firewall; that’s the back of the engine compartment, near the windshield. Every Ford I have encountered so far (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) has had the tag on the door jamb. Some Fords also have an interior and exterior code. My 1996 Saab has it on the door jamb: ,248 ,—, ,Clear, concise, and to the point, “Black.” With Volvo, start in the door jamb; but it may be randomly placed somewhere under the hood, usually near the radiator, but that’s not a promise. The same can be said for most German cars as well, except for Volkswagen. I hope this proves helpful to you.

What do you really look like in person if you took a selfie right now?

See that there, the yellow threading? That’s a burst radiator hose. Nothing anyone could have predicted, unless of course you are some smart ass Quora user who never does anything wrong. Ladies and Gentlemen, always wait at least 2 hours before opening the hood of your car even if only to look at something in the engine bay. I have a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen and the 15 year old hose on the water pump burst when I popped the hood after a one hour drive to town and back. Thankfully, by the burns on my face but completely intact eyes you can tell I was wearing safety sunglasses (,Rugged Blue Diablo Safety Glasses,) but even then the radiator fluid blew them right off my face! I’ve been working on cars for over 15 years and my father retired from Ford, but nothing can stop random, arbitrary, chance from happening so please always take your time and slow down! P.S. She didn’t do it. I made my beautiful bride to be smile for the picture!

What might be other problems with the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta after the head gasket is blown and I drove it home?

Only you know how the car was treated once the head gasket blew and how hot it got. Basically did it get really toasted ? So the head gasket blew - Why ? Old age / mileage or did the car overheat because of a loss of coolant due to a leak from a hose, radiator, water pump or a mixture of all three ! Was the radiator clogged ? Then you presumably topped it up with water and got it home. Did it overheat again ? Firstly the head will have to come off - it may be warped or worse cracked so off to the machine shop. If the engine got toasted the block may be suspect as well. Also a hot engine will stress gaskets elsewhere as well as the water pump seal which may start leaking once the engine is put back together. The engine may not be the same again! Also why did it overheat ? Does the radiator need replacing because it is clogged or leaking or both ( Also has somone added a rad / block sealant at some point. These are known to cause blockages ) Personally for a 2000 car I would call it a day. Alternatively locate a good engine from a salvage yard but you should replace the cam belt and water pump before fitting and if it is a stick shift a new clutch You may be lucky fixing what you have but it is unlikely that you will not have additional problems one it is all back together !

Why is my 2009 Volkswagen Jetta overheating when the reservoir is full?

It could be the thermostat in the radiator that enables the engine to warm up quickly and then is supposed to open to allow coolant to flow, maintaining a constant minimum operating temperature. If it didn’t open that would be a problem. if it’s over heading when standing still as my old 1998!Beetle used to it it might be a bad cooling fan on the radiator. There was an issue with mine and it would never come on. I was OK driving the car as long as I was moving, and air was flowing through the radiator, but anytime Ai stopped the coolant temp would start to creep upward.

Why are Volkswagens more expensive to get fixed since they’re a foreign car brand, but so is Toyota and Honda? Why aren’t they as expensive?

Before you ask why, ask “if.” One of my current project cars is a 2001 Jetta VR6. Parts are shockingly cheap: The entire cooling system, including the radiator, had a bill of materials that came to $200 on RockAuto. The reality, for about the last 20 years, is that most cars of similar purchase cost and production volume have very similar costs for any given repair. Commonly-replaced parts, like alternators, accessory belts, wheel bearings, shock absorbers, etc., are all available from a very similar list of aftermarket suppliers. The car may be German or Japanese, but the aftermarket components are made in China, Mexico, Portugal, Vietnam, or wherever there is a favorable ratio of labor cost to manufacturing know-how. As for the reliability (meaning, probability of repair, as opposed to cost of repair), Toyota is still tops, but the stats say that VW has pulled ahead of Honda, at least in the US.

Is a cracked radiator occurring under 100,000 miles common for a Volkswagen Jetta?

Radiators are made these days with lightweight untreated aluminium. They don’t crack, but they corrode until they split. The outside environment, the age of the car and the quality of the coolant are more important than the mileage. It is not uncommon…

How do you drain coolant on a 2003 Volkswagen jetta WAGON 1.8T? I am trying to do a radiator flush and cannot find the coolant drain valve anywhere. Is the procedure different with this exact vehicle?

Just remove the lower radiator hose. The coolant may not come out in a controlled fashion but you won't break anything either which is a distinct possibility on an 18 year old car.

Are "million mile" batteries over engineered if a typical car lasts less than 300k miles?

As a person with a degree in alternative energy, I feel qualified to answer this question. I also have a bit of a background in battery science, though this is surprisingly irrelevant to this question. The typical components that wear out and make a car useless, with regard to combustion engines, are generally things unique to engine-powered cars. Engines lose compression over time and fail. Radiators fail and heat kills engines or transmissions. Transmission fail. Oil pans get leaks, fuel pumps get clogged, and so on. Timing belts fail, alternators fail, pulleys related to auxiliary functions fail or size. These sort of things are generally the reason that drive most people to get rid of cars. It may come as a surprise to some, but electric cars don't have these generally. Electric motors often drive the wheels directly, or nearly so. There's no clutch plate to burn up. There's no engine, no real oil or other fluids directly related to the drive train. (even power steering is done electronically in some gas cars, like my Volkswagen Jetta). The stuff it has in common, like brake pads/rotors, suspension, body, tires, steering linkage, radio, speakers, and so on, these things are already seen as somewhat or entirely expected to be replaced with regular frequency. They're also not generally a motivation to replace an entire car. When a gas car hits 200k or 300k, the entire engine will need overhauled or replaced, and the transmission too, and likely all the belts and accessory stuff. This is usually why gas cars only “last" a few hundred thousand miles. But let's ignore all that. A battery pack, the single most expensive component, if it can outlast the body three times over, it can just be put into 3 different cars over its life. It doesn't need to fit an engine mount, it just has to fit the battery compartment of the next car it goes into. Anyone who's tried to put an engine in a car that isn't (more or less) the exact replacement for what's already there, he knows the problem. A truck engine won't fit most cars, but if the battery packs are standardized, then it's trivial to swap them. In fact, tesla is/was experimenting with this, to such a degree that instead of having high speed chargers they would just have you pull up to the exchange station, swap the battery in a few minutes with robots, and you get a fully charged battery for your drained one. Then they charge it up for the next customer or decommissioned it if it hit so many cycles, to be recycled into a new battery. You can imagine the implications.

Do Volkswagens have alot of problems?

I bought a 2014 VW Jetta TDI (six-speed manual) as soon as I found out that they were selling them. The warranty on these cars is phenomenal. “Anything that touches oil is covered”. Unfortunately I’ve had two warranted issues with the car. The first was one of the fans for the radiator almost fell off and the belt was shot within the first week. This should have been caught by the inspectors of the car before I bought it. The second one was the DPF. This is a VERY expensive part but it not only didn’t cost me a dime, I got to drive a new Jetta as a loaner while they waited to get a new DPF. I haven’t had any other issues with it, and I’ve had it almost 1 1/2 years. I’m a delivery driver, and had a run from STL to KC a few weeks ago. Filled up right before I left and when I got back. 49 MPG. It’s really a fun car to drive except for getting in and out of it for a 6′3″/230# guy, but I quibble.
