Since only use premium gas, frequent oil changes- operating cost of #Volkswagen #Tiguan higher than I thought would be. Now $700 valve job.
I have a Volkswagen Tiguan with a little over 100,000 miles. I guess this engine has an issue with carbon buildup. I had an issue when the car was fairly new - they charged me to clean out the carbon and then a few days later the issue came back; it turned out to be a failing ignition coil. The coil was under warranty, but I still had to pay for the carbon scraping. Fast forward 10 years. Once again I’m having some engine power issues; the car would lose power upon acceleration. I take it back to the dealer, they diagnosed a carbon buildup and charged me $700 to scrape it off. I was hesitant because of the previous experience. They insisted it was the carbon buildup problem. After collecting the car post cleaning I got less than a mile away when the problem came back! I limped back to the dealer and told him what was going on; after extensive investigation, it turned out to be the ignition coil again. Once again it was fixed under warranty. That’s ,not, the most outrageous thing A few weeks later, the water pump started going out. I asked the dealer why they didn’t detect that the water pump was failing when they had the engine apart just a few weeks ago? The service writer (not my usual guy) said “We don’t check for that stuff!” I then took my car to a local independent Volkswagen mechanic, and he replaced the water pump and a few other things for about half the cost of the dealer. This is ,still, not the most outrageous thing. After getting the car back, I started noticing some odd transmission shifting issues. The car would shift late, it would clunkinto gear, it would rev and then slow down unexpectedly – just not running well at all. OK, back to the dealer, since I thought this to be a little out of the league of my independent guy. A day later, they tell me that I needed a brand new transmission for about $7,000. I asked if they were absolutely certain and made sure it wasn’t the same mechanic who made the genius diagnostic about the carbon buildup. Assuredly it was not - I need a new transmission. (Bottom line, the car wasn’t worth spending $7,000 on that repair, so I was a bit bummed out). Whilst driving at home, I got a very scary red flashing error light saying the engine had no oil! I pulled over to the side of freeway to check the oil, and it was fine. I called on my independent guy, and he referred me to another mechanic nearby who had some transmission experience. I limped over there and he managed to squeeze me in. He hooked up his magic dohicky and said “I think there’s a problem with your turbo intake. “ ( I didn’t even know that I had a turbo!). He looked, grabbed a screwdriver, and saw that the intake hose to the turbo had come off. He pushed it on, tightened it up …and the car ran like a champ! He didn’t want to charge me anything, but I gave him $20 for his time. (Later I looked at the dealer paperwork - they hadn’t even driven the car to test it). So that is my story - ,the mechanic wanted $7,000 to fix a hose.
Overpriced and peak power tuned to 140. With massive discounts, its BS4 version costed more than freshly launched, better speced Jeep Compass Trailhawk. Also no petrol version is available.
Oil change and cost to own is a huge factor in cost. Mercedes Benz also 10k. But do you feel oil does it’s best lubricating or removal of impurities? My take 3 to 4 thousand miles is ok. But in my mind sooner. Average ownership of new cars is 5 years. After that, who cares! Well maybe I care. I change oil like a religion.
No.. Not a Prestigious Car Internationally.. Also since it is imported to India.. It is exorbitantly Priced.. A 2nd Hand Tiguan will still be very costly.. And the resultant maintenance costs will kill you Bad Idea Instead Buy a new SUV in the same Money.. Like Creta/ EcoSport and be tension free for the next 10–15 years
In Indian context it would be Citroen C5 Aircross, it would cost around 25 lakhs when it will launch in India so it will compete with some of the established players like the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Compass, Ford Endeavour, VW Tiguan, Mahindra Alturas, Isuzu MUX.
1 After sales is a hit or miss 2 lack of features compared to rivals. 3. No change in design for a decade . International markets got the new Polo but India didn't. Also the minimalist designs are not to everyone's taste. 4. Expensive spare parts. 5. Lackluster engines in BS6. Big numbers on paper but drivability is affected due to the smaller 999cc engines. Diesel discontinued. 6. Reduction in building costs like introduction of 3 cylinder engines but not passing on the benefits to customer in terms of price . 7. Expensive for the size . Check out the prices for Tiguan and T roc. Simply no road presence for the money you pay. EDIT Boom!
Jeep Compass belong to a segment lower than Volkswagen Tiguan. Tiguan is a bigger and more spacious car. It has more features and can rival any other badge cars like Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes GLA in terms of build quality and premium interiors and exterior. Tiguan costs more than Compass. When you compare the top end variants of both Tiguan costs 10 Lac + more than the compass. However, with the discounts you can get with VW and if you don’t need a sun roof and key less entry and push start button then you can choose the comfortline variant. The costs then would be around 3–4 Lacs more than the Compass (with discounts) and you will get a bigger car with an awesome automatic gearbox and a more premium offering all round. I own a Tiguan Comfortline. I did look at the compass and was in fact about to buy it. Then I test drove the Tiguan and found the difference and was ready to pay the premium I did to buy the Tiguan over the Compass.
Better at what? Fuji Heavy Industries build durable and interestingly engineered vehicles. They appear to put longevity and durability above entertainment. I've owned and/ or driven Subaru and Saab (92x) versions. The Subarus (even the WRX STI) seemed rough and unsophisticated. VWs are very much like their German kin. They handle well, have plenty of power, but most importantly have that creamy ride that soaks up bad pavement with no noise or roughness. Just like all German cars, they also have sophisticated electrical features and devices. They typically fail at about 50,000 miles. They also will cost a fortune to repair, if you're lucky enough to find a shop that can diagnose and correct the problem. I would compare the two as the good but homely wife, versus the hot and high-maintenance mistress. It really depends on what you value the most.
SUVs are also categorised as softroaders and traditional old school SUVs. The softroaders are a product of New age electronics, a monocoque chasis and a comparatively smaller size than the old schooled SUVs. Under that budget you can expect a lot of exciting packages, that offer great fun both behind the wheel as well as in the backseat. Let's start off with the options which come under this budget segment. Jeep compass Volkswagen Tiguan Tata Hexa Hyundai Tucson Toyota Fortuner (Costs a little over 25 lakhs) Ford Endeavour (Costs a little over 25 lakhs) If you just want comfort and well appointed interiors go for the Hyundai Tucson. If you want a capable offroader with decent interiors go for the Jeep compass or the Volkswagen Tiguan. If it's the ride quality that you are after and also want to do a fair bit of offroading with the vehicle too go for the Tata Hexa. But if you want a big brawny SUV that could annihilate any surface that you throw at it and is also feature packed, the big boys of this segment (Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour) are more than capable of serving you well in this regard. Cheers. Happy buying. :)
