The daytime running led lights running across the bonnet will definitely make it look more attractive on road. Having recently driven or ridden several small and mid-sized SUVs, I was surprised by how high the noise level was the Honda CRV. As for the Toyota RAV4, the ride was comfortable and the noise level was acceptable. If you enjoy driving, rather than view driving as a pain to be endured, I agree with Mr. Reznik and Mr. Ros that the Mazda CX5 is a joy to drive and returns exceptional economy for such a vehicle. Subaru is the company responsible for the current obsession with all wheel drive, and most manufacturers have joined the band wagon. I have driven Subaru vehicles in severe snow storms in Maine, and they are exceptionally good at maintaining traction in such conditions. But many drivers of all wheel drive cars do not understand that stopping distances on a snow covered or icy road is not enhanced by all wheel drive. Still, I see people who never see snow or ice buying all wheel drive cars because they believe such cars are safer. The only way an all wheel drive car is safer on a dry road might be if you drive at ridiculously dangerous rally speeds. I recently drove a base model 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan equipped with a 2 liter gasoline engine and a six speed automatic transmission. If I had to write an article for Car and Driver comparing the Tiguan to the CX5, I would find both cars superb examples of how it feels to drive a well designed car that has a great deal of interior space. I'd rate both cars as providing superior handling and braking, give the Tiguan a slight edge on quietness and ride quality, and the CX5 the edge for exceptional fuel economy. I suspect the biggest factor is that there is no social stigma associated with being unable to drive a manual. In Europe, most countries have two drivers licenses, one that allows you to drive anything, and another that only allows you to drive automatics. Most Australian and US states and most Canadian provinces never did this. In Australia, some states do not allow new drivers to drive manuals, but after 2 or 3 years of driving, they can drive anything they want without being tested on a manual. When I hear lots of Europeans talk about driving manuals, they note the shame associated with the licence that only allows one to drive automatics. Another factor is that the three big American car companies pioneered the manufacture of automatic transmission cars. If you look at the history section of the Wikipedia article on ,Automatic transmission,, American car companies have been selling automatic cars since the 40s. Another major factor is simply very cheap Japanese and Korean cars. In the US, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand, Japanese cars are almost always cheaper than European cars. Korean cars are usually the cheapest cars on the market. Many Kia models don't even come with a manual option. The Kia Carnival has not been sold in a manual option in the US, Canada, or Australia since 2009. Until the 60s, the cheapest cars on the market in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand were cheap (mostly manual) German cars like the Volkswagen Beetle, but in the 70s, Japanese cars started gaining a huge following because of their reliability. The French companies left the US market around the same time Japanese cars started exploding onto the scene. That is no coincidence. Right now, you can buy an automatic Japanese hatchback for almost $1,500 cheaper than a manual Volkswagen hatchback: For the cheapest models (manuals or automatics, depending) a comparison of Honda and Volkswagen looks like this: The Swiss market is completely different. How is it that my new Volkswagen Tiguan doesn't require an oil change until 10,000 miles? All of my previous cars required oil changes every 3,000 miles. The manufacturer may suggest 10k miles between oil changes but that’s way too much. Here’s the Issue, ALL EUROPEAN cars (this VW, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz), the first oil that’s put into it are, ALL SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL,. That’s all the Europeans use and that they recommend is Synthetic motor oil. IF you lift the hood of a Mercedes-Benz and Porsche there is even a sticker on the front grill frame that recommends a brand Mobil 1 Synthetic by Mobil oil company. That said, ,I change my oil every 5 k miles, ,why? because it’s just enough for ,Synthetic., ,3,000 is too little. 5k is just right, 10k ,is too much (meaning too far in between oil changes). I use the cheapest Synthetic Motor Oil I can find, which a no-name-generic brand that Walmart carries in a 5 quart jug for about $18. I’m told of all the Synthetics Pennzoil is the best because it is PURE and REAL Synthetic. Pennzoil sued and lost the case. But Pennzoil claims their oil is the only synthetic because it’s made from natural gas and not further refined Crude oil or Petroleum-based oil. You can always change the MOTOR OIL MORE OFTEN. But don’t let it go further then the recommended change. But here’s what you need to know, no matter how good they filter the oil. Each combustion in the cylinder creates “CARBON MONOXIDE AND CARBON DEPOSITS”. Your motor oil in your engine is in a closed loop. Nothing from the OUTSIDE can get in., Except those Carbon deposits from each and every combustion. They get in the motor oil through the rings and cylinder walls and the valve guides and valve seals. So NEW MOTOR OIL will look like or have a Golden hue to it when your check your dipstick. It’s just a tad tan or darker than kitchen oil / cooking oil like Canola Corn oil. As the motor oil ages; it will collect carbon exhaust and slowly turn darker-and-darker and more brown. FRESH SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS: So check your motor oil at 5k, and you will see it’s no longer a golden hue color on the oil dipstick. Time to change the oil. Don’t wait for the 10k miles. Now, a word to the wise. Whether you change the oil yourself or go to those Jiffy Lube places. Save the receipts file them in a large manila envelope. You don’t have to take the car to the dealer for these oil changes. I’m busy so to save money and time, what I do is buy the Oil filter and the Synthetic Motor oil and then I go to my LOCAL JIFFY LUBE. And they will change my oil for $20., Quick in and out in less than 1 minutes. It’s worth it. I pay them cash and I’m on my way. I save the Oil receipt that I bought from Walmart as proof. The reason your keep the receipts is there was a lawsuit once where the dealer failed to honor the warranty because they said the guy never changed the oil. He showed them his receipts but the dealer didn’t believe him. Well he sued the dealer and the courts believed him. And he Won the lawsuit. Now you only have to pay car insurance, Registration once a year, and preventative maintenance: Like oil changes, new tires, batteries, brakes mostly, radiator fluid, Transmission fluid. on ALL my cars I did all the following: Synthetic Motor Oil - every 5k miles Synthetic Transmission Oil - once a year Synthetic Gear Oil - once every 2 years Synthetic Power Steering fluid - once a years Synthetic DOT Brake fluid - flushed each year Radiator fluid - power flushed every year. And if it was gas powered? Petro for you Europeans? I always ran High Octane. Diesel is diesel. ,And contrary to what anybody tells you? Pink diesel is the same as ,diesel #2. ,It’s just ,no. 2 is taxed heavier, for cars and passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles. While Pink diesel, ,was designed to farm equipment, off-road, generators, boats, airplanes and it’s not taxed as heavily,. it was to, give farmers a break on diesel prices, to run their tractors and farm equipment so they ,added a pink/red dye ,to tell which one diesel it is. I have a Volkswagen Tiguan with a little over 100,000 miles. I guess this engine has an issue with carbon buildup. I had an issue when the car was fairly new - they charged me to clean out the carbon and then a few days later the issue came back; it turned out to be a failing ignition coil. The coil was under warranty, but I still had to pay for the carbon scraping. Fast forward 10 years. Once again I’m having some engine power issues; the car would lose power upon acceleration. I take it back to the dealer, they diagnosed a carbon buildup and charged me $700 to scrape it off. I was hesitant because of the previous experience. They insisted it was the carbon buildup problem. After collecting the car post cleaning I got less than a mile away when the problem came back! I limped back to the dealer and told him what was going on; after extensive investigation, it turned out to be the ignition coil again. Once again it was fixed under warranty. That’s ,not, the most outrageous thing A few weeks later, the water pump started going out. I asked the dealer why they didn’t detect that the water pump was failing when they had the engine apart just a few weeks ago? The service writer (not my usual guy) said “We don’t check for that stuff!” I then took my car to a local independent Volkswagen mechanic, and he replaced the water pump and a few other things for about half the cost of the dealer. This is ,still, not the most outrageous thing. After getting the car back, I started noticing some odd transmission shifting issues. The car would shift late, it would clunkinto gear, it would rev and then slow down unexpectedly – just not running well at all. OK, back to the dealer, since I thought this to be a little out of the league of my independent guy. A day later, they tell me that I needed a brand new transmission for about $7,000. I asked if they were absolutely certain and made sure it wasn’t the same mechanic who made the genius diagnostic about the carbon buildup. Assuredly it was not - I need a new transmission. (Bottom line, the car wasn’t worth spending $7,000 on that repair, so I was a bit bummed out). Whilst driving at home, I got a very scary red flashing error light saying the engine had no oil! I pulled over to the side of freeway to check the oil, and it was fine. I called on my independent guy, and he referred me to another mechanic nearby who had some transmission experience. I limped over there and he managed to squeeze me in. He hooked up his magic dohicky and said “I think there’s a problem with your turbo intake. “ ( I didn’t even know that I had a turbo!). He looked, grabbed a screwdriver, and saw that the intake hose to the turbo had come off. He pushed it on, tightened it up …and the car ran like a champ! He didn’t want to charge me anything, but I gave him $20 for his time. (Later I looked at the dealer paperwork - they hadn’t even driven the car to test it). So that is my story - ,the mechanic wanted $7,000 to fix a hose.
