Honda City What you'll like: Practical diesel, fast petrol and convenient CVT. Take your pick Loaded with equipment (sunroof, feather-touch climate control, keyless entry & go, rear air-con, reversing camera) Extremely spacious cabin. Loads of sensible touches make it easy to live with Diesel & Petrol, both, have segment-topping ARAI fuel efficiency ratings Big 510 liter boot will swallow your airport & holiday luggage Light controls, slick gearshift and easy maneuverability for the city. Effortless to drive Honda's reliability & fuss-free ownership experiences What you won't: Same diesel as the Amaze. Outright performance & refinement levels are lower than the Verna, Vento & Rapid Front looks like a mere facelift. Too similar to the outgoing car. Garish chrome grille too Skinny 175 mm tires & boring alloy wheel design. Both need to be upgraded Light build quality. Lacks the sheer solidity of its European rivals Electric steering remains light & sensitive at high speed. No feedback either 6 footers will find rear headroom to be in short supply Some features missing (proper dead pedal, folding rear seat, height-adjustable seatbelts, boot lid cladding) Volkswagen Vento What you'll like: A well-built, robust, European sedan Clean and contemporary styling. Boot is superbly integrated. Stunning diesel engine. Mature suspension setup. Balanced ride & handling Segment firsts: Reach adjust steering, gear recommender, adjustable driver armrest etc. 1.5L TDI + 7-Speed DSG has come on offer in the ‘New Vento’. Safety features start from base variants. DSG variants get ESP and Hill-hold function What you won't: Electric power steering. The Vento deserves a pure hydraulic unit Quite a loud & clattery diesel engine Below-average after-sales service & support quality VW's long-term reliability and ownership costs are unknown
Yes, it was underpowered. But the new facelift isn’t. Now, it gets a 1.5L K15 petrol engine which can produce maximum power of 103 bhp and maximum torque of 138 Nm. It now competes well with its rivals like Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento. The diesel engine is 1.3L DDiS 200 Multijet Diesel engine which produces maximum power of 89 bhp and maximum torque of 200 Nm. This also doesn’t feel underpowered due to its light weight but still lags under 2000 RPM. Hope this helps. Thank You!!
Since your running costs will not be high, your ownership will not be long and fuel economy does not matter to you, spending an extra something on the diesel variant will not be worthwhile for you. It is therefore best that you invest in the petrol variant.
If Petrol engines are considered, Honda's I-VTEC petrol engine is smooth, silent and provides very linear power delivery. Hondas are excellent when it comes to Petrol cars. And, Honda's new diesel I-DTEC motor, used in Amaze and City, isn't at par with its rivals. Seems like Honda people will have to work much harder to attain that sheer brilliance that they enjoy in Petrol cars. Its diesel engines are noisy and NVH levels aren't that impressive. Skoda Rapid, doesn't look as sharp as Honda city. But I've heard Skoda have just launched a facelift of Rapid, two-three days ago. It does look sharper than older one, but, still the design isn't attractive like city. Another thing is that, Rapid's diesel engine is very noisy. I've heard that many times. It should be at par in terms of performance though. But, still, Rapid is not a good choice amongst these sedans. Rapid is completely derived from Skoda Fabia. Volkswagen Vento is a really good car. It's interiors are plain and simple, yet Elegant. And, its performance is wonderful. The exteriors too, are again simple yet classic. Its a good car, nonetheless. Nissan Sunny is a large car, that's why they call it, its a caaar. But, it doesn't look as sharp or even as elegant as Honda city or Vento. Performance is good, though. The limited outreach of Nissan, Renault and Skoda limits these cars’ sales. These cars too aren't the best, plus their aftersales part isn't impressive as well as economical. This means the direct competition between City and Vento. And both these cars are very well engineered and crafted. They provide overall good package. But, Honda City is now getting older and Honda is set to reveal new Honda City in 2017. And that 2017 all new Honda City will have everything to tighten the competition. But, no clear winner here. Lets see which company has a better product after refreshing their product lineup in 2017.
Considering your question I guess you are aware with the technicality of both vehicles. I would strongly suggest you to go with Volkswagen Vento TSI. S-Cross offers value for money and a peace of mind in owning the vehicle. But you will compromise with build quality and furthermore safety features. S-Cross is bit undepowered in terms of engine capacity. Maruti Suzuki can't provide the sheer build quality, paint quality and panel rigidness which Volkswagen can. There are lot of complains in Baleno of colours fading the shine in 6 months of ownership. Volkswagen generally doesn't changes the overall looks of cars in their facelifts or generation Update, so even after 5 years of owning the vehicle you will not feel that design is outdated or else. Hope this helps for you.
Fiat introduced the Linea to the Indian market during January 2009. It was set to be launched on Diwali 2008 but due to some unfortunate events here, it's launch was postponed to a couple of months. It was positioned to rival the likes of the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki SX4 and the Hyundai Verna in its segment. Despite the Linea having its price on the higher side, it's initial sales were good. Fiat managed to sell the first two batches of the Linea by July 2009, which accounted for about 16,000 units. One of the reasons for the decent sales figures of the Linea was the choice of engines it offered. The Linea was available in a choice of a 1.4 litre naturally aspirated petrol motor and a 1.3 litre multijet diesel motor. Both engines received a lot of praise from experts and auto enthusiasts alike. On the other hand, it's diesel motor was seen in many other automobiles like the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Tata Indica Vista. Fiat also rolled out the Linea T-Jet in 2010. This model came with the same petrol motor, this time being tuned to produce 90 BHP of power. Sales were steady until 2011. The launch of the new fluidic Verna affected the sales of the Linea. There was also the facelifted Honda City, which launched here in late 2011, which pulled the potential customers for Linea towards itself. Fiat brought up the Linea facelift in 2013 and it didn't work much for them. It featured revised front and rear ends and a better interior compared to the outgoing model. As per reports, Fiat sold just 1,400 units of the Linea facelift one year into its launch. Put that in context with the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna, whom managed about 36,000 and 32,500 units respectively around the same time. Add to that, there were new offerings which came into the segment like the Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid. Fiat delayed in launching the next generation Linea here due to its poor sales here. In 2015, Fiat were averaging just 500 units in monthly sales numbers. The automaker was struggling to keep its head above water and brought its Marquee American brand, Jeep to India that year. In 2017, Jeep launched the Compass which turned out to be an initial success. This prompted Fiat to make Jeep their leading brand here and were banking on the latter. Then in 2018, Fiat decided to discontinue its entire model line-up here including the Linea and exited the country. The Linea was an underacheiving product from the automaker which deserved to sell more here. It's a shame such a product had to face the wrath of Fiat's sales and service network in India, which were very few compared to their rivals. Fiat as a brand struck a chord amongst the auto enthusiasts here due to their great handling cars. Unfortunately, there were very few of them and this didn't result much in sales numbers. Hope Fiat returns here with an even stronger product line-up in the near future. Thank you.
