This is going to be a long answer. So, sit back and enjoy the ride! Let me take you on a ride to my beloved ,Maharashtra, (literally means Great Nation). Maharashtra is one of the wealthiest and the most developed states in India. It is India's and also the world's second-most populous sub-national entity having over 110 million inhabitants (comparable to Mexico). I’ve owned both The Honda City AT for 7 years and Vento TSI HL Plus with DSG since the last two months. I think I can answer this question with my experience. Here are the points. Reliability. In my 7 years of ownership of Honda City it never I mean NEVER failed to start. Just turn the key and the engine comes to life. Vento is new one for me but the way it sounds and drives it seems pretty solid. I am sure if maintained properly it will turn out to be pretty reliable. Engine. I drove the city for.. well see it yourself, over a period of seven years and it still drove like new. The engine was absolutely silent and No vibrations or sound can be felt at a red light. Pretty powerful and peppy engine of the city. Vento on the other hand has a smaller engine but it is Turbocharged!! Resulting in great power and amazing torque which the city lags. Overall the Vento’s TSI engine Is far more advanced than Honda’s I-VTEC decades old engine. Drive quality. Both cars have entirely different character. City on one hand is a super relaxed car with a feather touch steering. Vento has a speed sensing EPS which makes the steering hard as the speed increases. This increases the control giving confidence to the driver. Ever wondered what will happen if you suddenly turned the steering at high speeds? It would be difficult in a Vento to do so compared to City. Transmission. Vento has the best system, the DSG with lightening fast shifts, and the smoothest shifting experience. The city has CVT which is smooth and relaxed not the best way of transferring power to the wheel in case you want acceleration. The manual mode in DSG is superb and takes only a few milliseconds to complete a shift giving a feel of a sports car. City’s CVT could have been better to use the Engine to full potential. Mileage. Contrary to the beliefs that VW cannot give high mileage, mine give excellent mileage see image…. Owing to a smaller engine of 1.2 L it is frugal in traffic compared to a city which owing to a bigger 1.5 L engine consumes more petrol. (BTW the new Audi A4 has a 1.4 L TSI engine ) Safety: both cars are safe the top spec City has 6 airbags while mine has 4 however its not just airbags which make a car safe. Vento has ESP and Traction control which should have been there kn City as well. Overall Vento is safer than a Honda City. Tyres: Vento has wider tyres than city making it more in control compared to the city. Price: top spec variants of both cars are almost 2 Lakh apart. Vento with all discount schemes is cheaper than a city. But lacks a sunroof and leather seats. Maintainance cost is comparable and is around 1 re per Km. Looks. Vento with its DRL looks beautiful compared to a city whose DRL’s do not shine as bright. City is slightly longer than a Vento due to its long bonnet. Overall if you were to choose between the two, it is a difficult decision to make. Test drive both cars and then make your choice. Update. I took the Vento from DELHI to Chandigarh clocking an average of 18.5 ,kmpl, using 93 octane fuel. It Drove super smooth, max speed I could test was 157 kmph. During return the temperature was 45degrees but the AC made the cabin super cool. No fatigue at all. Overall I’m really pleased to buy the Vento.
Hi! As per the figures you might have understood that Rapid is selling in very high numbers Nov-Dec and Mar- April period only. Coming to the point of more selling in numbers, I have worked with Volkswagen so I think I am eligible to answer this question through my understandings. Ofcourse Volkswagen Vento and Skoda Rapid are same platform cars. And as you mention it VW is a Big Brand than Skoda we all agree. If you visit both the showrooms, you will find some major differences. I don't want to mention deeply. In short Skoda's product line up starts from Rapid only. And the other way VW Vento is the 3rd in Volkswagen line up. It means that Volkswagen is working on Polo and Ameo very aggressively to gain the market. As, I hope you may know Vento always will be on waiting period and it's having couple of more variants compare to Rapid. The other major reason I feel is, Skoda offers discounts bluntly on Rapid. Now, Volkswagen doesn't. It does but in a limited numbers. The customers might thinks that we are getting same engines, same technology, almost same brand image at less price. So… I hope you can understand next. Before I conclude, Let me clear you one more thing. I love Skoda Rapid more than VW Vento. :)
**** Do read till end *** ( I was asked to update this on answer) One night around 10 pm, I was coming back from corporate event, in Volkswagen Vento fairly new, 8K KMs on it and less than 1.5 Years old. The low fuel indicator was ON, when I started in the evening itself, and it was now showing, it will go another 35 KMs DTE (distance to empty). I had to get petrol in the car, so I went to this Shell petrol station en route home, and I noticed the price was 83.05, which seemed expensive, so I asked, to which attendant confirmed that Shell petrol is atleast 2 - 3 Rs expensive then others. I did not want to go another petrol pump then, and neither I wanted to pay extra for full tank. so I asked to fill up for 600 Rs. He filled the petrol, I paid by card, he gave me slip and I left. I exited the petrol pump and drove for around 500 mts, and I saw that, the DTE still shows 35 KMs. I was furious that the petrol pump guy cheated me, and seems like he didnt fill anything at all. Now the petrol pump was located on one highway, with dividers and all, If I had to take U turn and come back it would take more time, so I decided to drive in reverse direction, which was absolutely stupid idea in hindsight. I drove for few 100 mts like that, then I took U turn, and started driving on wrong side to go to the petrol station. It did not take more than 10 - 15 mins for me to reach back. By the time I reached, the lights of the petrol pump were turned off, and they had already blocked the entry to the pump, and were starting to block the exit too, it was time to close down. It made sense, that he would cheat at this time since they are closing, so even if someone will come back, they will find it closed by then. I parked my car right in front of the last car, which was filling up, at the same pump I filled the petrol. They asked me to move the car. I said you guys did not fill petrol in my car, I paid 600Rs. The same attendant who filled petrol in my car, asked me calmly to please park in the side, and assured me there is some confusion. I showed them my dashboard fuel warning. How is it possible that car is still showing no change in DTE, and neither did the fuel gauge changed. To which the attendant replied, that sir, sometimes it take time for it to reflect correct status. I told him, that I drove 500 mts and come back, and then I switched off and on multiple times to show him, it was still the same. I showed him the receipt, as in the image above, he said this is credit card statement, it doesnt say which pump and other details, but i was not provided the same. Then the supervisor came, who didnt look much of supervisor, all these attendants were young probably in 21 to 26 age group. The so called supervisor said, he can generate copy of the pump receipt from inside the office, let me get that. Not sure how could i trust some receipt like that. He got me this. Now since the time, and amount exactly matched, so I knew this was correct receipt. I was planning on collecting all evidences to send complaint where ever possible. But the guy insisted that your fuel gauge is faulty, and its not showing correct. I told him, its a new car, and the gauge was working, because when I started in the evening, it was showing over 50 kms, and its reducing since then. He said, “ sir this happens all the time” supervisor said, it happens a lot with Hyundai Accent, one time someone filled full tank, but it did not move at all, and after they started driving, it was ok. I understood, they want me gone. I said I already drove and came back. Then supervisor suggested, we fill the tank again, and you can see for yourself. he filled again 500 Rs worth petrol, atleast as per pump receipt. Still the Fuel Gauge did not budge, and neither the DTE. I just realised what a fool am I, in either case, whether he was cheating and not filling any petrol, or the fuel gauge is faulty, additional petrol was not going to help. May be he didnt fill the petrol this time too. and I am cheated with additional 500 Rs. By the way, the pump itself is open 24/7 but this was shift change time, and thus they closed all the lights and blocked entry and exit. Now all the attendants from the pump, were on my car, it felt intimidating, I sent these images of petrol pump receipt to my wife on whatsapp. Not sure what would happen next. One of the attendant standing at the rear door, listening to all these discussion and stories gave a bang to car’s petrol tank cap, and BINGO the fuel gauge started rising, and DTE started showing some 100 KMs something. Guys there was no scam, we read about so many scams going around, that we get super suspicious, started making our own conspiracy theories. Reason I am posting this under this question, because I want people keep their sanity also intact, dont distrust people too much. Fortunately I did not misbehave with the guys at pump, but the way I was loosing my patience, I could have spoken ill to them too. Finally, before leaving, I apologised to the attendant, he humbly said “sir yeh meters ka bharosa nahi rehta” (Cant trust these gauges). Update — Few days after posting this answer, while it was still not that popular. I got a message from Shell Manager - corporate office, and he asked me the name of employee who was scamming, he would get them fired right away, because this is not acceptable to Shell. I called him, and explained the situation to him. So really quality conscious. Update —- I was asked to mention readers to read till end, in case if they left in middle, they will take-home wrong message about Shell. There are 100’s of comments vouching for Shell, and their quality / standards.

Thanks for A2A. I would suggest you to go for ,HONDA CITY Model: Petrol Variant. (Why Petrol? Because Honda's petrol engine is best in class.) The City petrol comes boosted with a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine, which can be bought either with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic transmission. It offers a maximum power of 117 bhp with 146 Nm of torque. On the fuel efficiency front, the City petrol leads its class and offers a whopping 17.8 kmpl and 18 kmpl of mileage with manual and automatic transmission, respectively. In terms of drivability, handling and safety, the fourth-generation Honda City has an upper hand as compared to its rivals. With low maintenance cost and cheaper spare parts, the City proves to be a worthy, economical deal. Source : Google Image Happy Riding..!!
“A talking newspaper ad” It was the 21 September,2010 issue of The Times of India. On the morning of 21 September,2010 as I went to grab the newspaper lying at my doortep. I could hear a muffled voice of a man coming from the inside of the newspaper. It was the last page of the newspaper which had an advertisement of the new Volkswagen Vento. There was a light-sensitive speaker stuck to the page and would start playing the audio as soon as you unfolded the newspaper. Link to the video : It had been the most discussed topic at school. I have seen newspaper advertisements giving out shampoo sachets but had never seen anything like this before. This was a very innovative idea and a unique one. I’ll probably remember this for a long time. Photo credits: Google Images Thank you so much for the upvotes. This was my first official answer on quora. Regards, Sharath
You can go for german brothers, i.e., Volkswagen Vento Diesel DSG or the Skoda Rapid diesel DSG. Actually the only other option is the Hyundai Verna Diesel automatic but it's automatic gearbox is really lazy and lethargic. On the other hand, VW's 7-speed automatic gearbox is a state of the art machine with really really good performance as well as efficiency. If you are going for the Germans, just opt for the extended warranty as this gearbox in the early days had a bit notorious image of getting failed and expensive to repair. Also, this gearbox is also used in the skoda superb(petrol). But since the torque output figures of the 1.5 TDI mills of rapid and vento falls within the range this gearbox can handle, hence it is used here also.
Not to be rude But just get a friggin Prius Or get the new Prius! Also if you are a true environmentalist, this question should have been which cycle should I get? (Image source: Google Images)
Looking at the cars that you specified for comparison, I can see only one possible reason that you included the Duster. The price range (although it is higher than the sedans). There is nothing else that can be compared since it’s an SUV while the other three are sedans. That said, here are some inputs on the cars you shortlisted. ,Honda City: Image courtesy: Google. The Brand value:, Honda has always been known for its high quality of engines. Be it the i-VTEC or the newly launched i-DTEC diesel motor, it has always been engines that had the driver’s raw appeal. High revving, a linear power delivery & a peppy nature have defined Honda’s engines. To back it up is the Japanese carmaker’s engineers. ,The Car:, Honda cars have set a benchmark when it comes to the overall car in a given segment. The City is no exception. Having held the crown for the best mid-sizer for years, its position was intermittently challenged by the revamped Hyundai Verna. The Fluidic Verna as it is best known. However, this changed when the next gen City was launched a few months ago, especially since it now had a diesel motor. It set the charts flying when it came to raw numbers. 7216 to be precise for the month of May, 2014 as compared to the 3,334 of the Verna!! Pros:, Peppy engine. Benchmark in its segment. Refined & Efficient motors. Class leading rear legroom. , ,Cons:, Diesel motor is noisy. Not as refined as that of the Vento’s. Spares & services are costly as compared to the Verna., Skinny tyres. Loses out on confidence when in cornering especially in the monsoon season. ,Hyundai Verna: Image Courtesy: Google. The Brand Value:, No surprises here. Hyundai has become the second largest car manufacturer of India. It has dethroned the home grown Mahindra & Mahindra as well as TATA Motors to acquire the second spot after Maruti Suzuki India. Great customer service, good after sales value & availability of spares has helped it gain strong market in India. The South Korean car maker is also known for making cars that have endless equipment list & are best bang for the buck. ,The Car:, It was the only car that took away the game away from segment leader Honda City. The Fluidic style is crisp, sharp & has a ‘nature inspired’ design, as the company claims, has been well received all over the world. The built quality is at par with most cars but where it trumps is the features that it comes bundled with. Some are segment first, some feel upmarket while others were never imagined in a car of this segment. Add all this with the good service & resale value, it is an obvious choice for most customers. Pros:, Good after sales service. Resale value. Looks stunning from every angle. Big bang for the buck. Endless equipment list. ,Cons:, Engines aren’t as refined as the City’s or the Vento’s. Softer tuned suspensions result in a bumpy ride. Highway stability, thus, becomes a major issue. The car continuously bobs over undulations. The steering is suited for city driving. At high speeds, it doesn’t weigh up considerably resulting in disconnected feel. The Fluidic styling is radical & does not go down well with some. Limited all round visibility due to high dashboard & kinked up rear windows. ,Volkswagen Vento: Image Courtesy: Google. The Brand Value:, Undoubtedly, the best automotive engineering in the world comes from the German car makers. VW is the biggest of them all with owned subsidiaries like Skoda, Lamborghini, Audi etc. These cars have been the marquee of excellence of build quality & refinement ever since. The only drawback is their costly repairs & somewhat poor resale value. ,The Car:, True to its VW credentials, it is solidly built, has a high level of engine refinement & a unique German feel to it. It has comparatively bland interiors & less equipment levels but scores high on ride quality. Pros:, German brand value. Best in class engines & transmissions. Solid built quality that is built to last. ,Cons:, ,Subdued styling. Not as good looking as the City or the Verna. Less equipment for a car that's pricy than its rivals. After sales service, spares are costly. Renault Duster: Image Courtesy: Google. The Brand Value:, Renault, the French giant is known for its European car appeal, success in Formula 1 & Motor Sports. It is also famously known for its aggressive pricing that has won accolades all over the world. ,The Car:, It is a full sized SUV, unlike the compact SUVs. Its high ground clearance, low maintenance, acres of space (as compared to the compact SUV Ford EcoSport) & good overall on road- off road capabilities have made it the global best seller for the company. Pros:, Rugged in built. High ground clearance (especially suited for Indian roads) Good off road abilities. Low on maintenance. ,Cons:, Decent level of equipment Interiors are too plain & simple. After sales service is still not up to the mark due to lesser dealer networks. According to a report, the company along with its alliance partner Nissan is planning to set up nearly 200 dealerships all over India by this fiscal. ,Conclusion:, From the above, it’s easy to comprehend that, if you don’t care much about the styling, equipment list but want a more driver focused car that’s built to last & if you are willing to shell out some more (even for the after sales & spares) for the same, the VW Vento is the one for you. If styling, endless equipment list, great after sales service & a great bang for the buck feature as your top priorities, look no further than the Hyundai Verna. It’s beautiful, good all round performer & has better resale value. If you are still unable to decide between the above, there’s a safer bet. Go with the Honda City. Its styling features & especially the high revving engine will bring a smile to your face every time you get behind the wheel. Plus it’s a segment leader! Customers have been using Honda cars & have little to complain. And still, if for some reason, you plan to shun out all these sedans & opt for a SUV rather, there won’t be any problems with the Renault Duster. You’ll be another happy customer with the Renault Duster!
