volvo wiki cars Q&A Review

What's the first "fast" car experience you ever had?

I had other ones before this, but… I was in college long long ago. There was this girl and yikes! Anyway, time went by and my Volvo was in the tank and she called and said she’d be by to pick me up. I’d known her for a month, which in college time, is a year or two and she drove one of these… It was 1976 at the time and this fine coupe was a 1972 or so. I was smoking a camel as 70% of the 20 year olds were doing in 1976…(check the stats) and this car pulled up with you know who behind the wheel. Now, despite being young, I knew cars pretty well, I had two older brothers whom were car freaks and it had rubbed off. This was, quite clearly a “big Mercedes.” I just wasn’t aware of which “big Mercedes” it was. We took it for a ride and opened it up. It was her father’s car. It weighed within a six pack of Bud of two tons and it had one of these… (Wiki) The engine was a ,cast iron, ,V8, with single overhead camshafts operating ,sodium,-filled ,valves, against hardened valve seats on each aluminium alloy cylinder head. Each hand-built unit was bench-tested for 265 minutes, 40 of which were under full load. Bosch ,K-Jetronic, electromechanical ,fuel injection, was standard at a time when fuel-injected cars were uncommon. As in all Mercedes-Benz automobile engines, the crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons were ,forged, instead of ,cast,. The 6.8 L (6834 cc or 417 in³) power plant was factory-rated at 286 hp (213 kW) with 405 lb·ft (549 N·m) of ,torque, helping to compensate for the 2.65 to 1 final ,drive ratio, necessary for sustained high-speed cruising. (end wiki) These are the German specs. We were flying back to campus on a country road, she was driving about 80 mph and what is crossing 175 feet up ahead? Well, she locked up the (dual-circuit, power-assisted hydraulic, four-wheel disc brakes. Front discs ventilated) and that 4400 pounds worth of German iron plus two college kids stopped with one tractor length to spare. It was a 1975 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 (Her father was a big shot in the DOD) and, although, I’m not a Mercedes guy? That effing car could fly and, unlike many cars of the era, that car could stop.

Why is Tesla not facing more competition?

I find this a truly bizarre question. Without for a moment detracting from the success of Tesla can anyone be ,really ,ignorant of the dozens and dozens of electric and hybrid vehicles from nearly every car maker on planet earth? Wiki - ,Plug-in electric vehicles in Europe - Wikipedia, for instance has a list of the best selling Electric Vehicles in Europe between 2010 and 2017. Top is the Mitsubishi PHEV, then the Renault Zoe, the Nissan Leaf the BMW I3 and then the Tesla model S. There are cars from VW, Volvo,Audi, Mercedes Benz. There are electric cars from MG, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Porsche, Seat, Skoda, even Aston Martin for heavens sake!!! Here is an article by a motoring magazine listing their top 10 new electric cars, ,Top 10 Best Electric Cars in Britain 2019 I am not saying that Tesla may not be at the cutting edge, but the pack is baying at their heels and we are nearly at the stage where every maker will offer an electric variant of several of their models. Do not forget that established makers have local dealer networks, can offer part exchanges, local repairs and servicing, and have a strong and often loyal customer base, all these factors may compensate for areas where their cars are less strong.

Why does Europe hate USA vehicles like Ford, Chevy and Dodge and Jeep, when Europe too has a number of low cost, mixed market family/ work/ sport/ government versatile, mass produced vehicles as well, like Renault and VW and Landrover?

I think your question is about 10 years out of date. I believe that (in the past?) the US has sometimes put barriers in the way of European Cars to protect their Automotive industry. The last few years have seen many changes and the Auto Industry has had many mergers and buy-outs, so that it is quite difficult to know what is an American car. Is a BMW made in the USA an American car?. Is a Honda made in the USA more Japanese than a Honda made in the UK? Next, please do not use the word Hate, It is far to powerful a word to use in a context like this. The driving conditions in many parts of the World are very different from those in the USA. The markets are different, the car usage different, the expectations of the customers different. Also one cannot ignore the fact that fuel in the US is particularly cheap by European standards Some areas where the US differs are Lack of demand for efficient turbo-charged diesel engines Total dominance of Auto transmission High percentage of pick-up trucks Apparent lack of interest in small cars (Guessing here) Preference for Saloons over Hatchbacks So the US market demands differ from other countries. How do car manufacturers solve this?, they try to build “World Cars”. These are models that can be adapted to fit different markets with minimal changes. For example the Ford Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo models are sold world wide but I believe the specifications change according to the market. This includes engines, suspension. trim levels and equipment. You mention Jeep in your question. Jeep is a division of the Chrysler-Fiat corporation. So are Jeeps American or Italian?. They are built in India, USA, and China. Can you actually have an indiginous car these days?. You also mention “Dodge” - funnily enough they are also owned by Chrysler -Fiat? Chevrolet, not a common name in the UK for instance, why not?. Well because GM makes cars in the UK under the name of “Vauxhall”. The same cars are sold in Europe under the name “Opel”. So GM cars have been made and sold in Europe for the past 80 odd years. I think they were sold as Buick-Opels in the US for a while. Opel/Vauxhall has now been sold to Peugeot/Citroen!. Does that mean that Opels become French cars now? No, the Car industry is now a world wide operation. The Companies are trans-National, the factories are around the World, and when you order a car you may not even know which country it was made in until you check the plate under the bonnet (sorry, that’s Hood!) Ford have a factory in Wales that produces engines. Within this is a smaller set up that produces engines for Jaguar Land Rover. from Wiki - “Production[,edit,] The plant currently produces the following Ford products: Volvo SI6 engine, designed by the then ,Volvo Cars, subsidiary. Production began in May 2006, used in ,Ford,, ,Volvo,, ,Jaguar, and ,Land Rover, products. 1.6 L I4 ,EcoBoost engine, for Ford,[3] Jaguar engine plant[,edit,] Jaguar Land Rover, have a "plant-within-a-plant" at Bridgend, which saved considerable investment costs by JLR. Staffed by workers dedicated to Jaguar production of the ,AJ-V8 engine,, it includes a linked flow-line of computer numerically controlled machines with automated loading and assembly. Component supply is on a "just-in-time" basis. JLR will move the production of its engines to its new ,Wolverhampton, plant by 2018. Future The plant currently produces 750,000 engines per annum. ,Volvo-badged, production ended in March 2015, and Jaguar-Land Rover products are scheduled to move completely to their own ,Wolverhampton, plant by 2020, production at the plant is projected by Ford of Europe to fall to around 250,000. In March 2015, Ford of Europe made the recommendation to Ford HQ in ,Detroit, to build the new "Dragon" designed petrol engines at Bridgend, after a review of options across plants in: Valencia, Spain; Cologne, Germany; and Craiova, Romania. The required investment is being backed with an additional £15M investment grant by the ,Welsh Government,. BBC Radio news on 2 March 2017 reported that the Bridgend operation was under threat as a result of Brexit. Former products[,edit,] The plant formerly produced the following products: CVH, engine (1980-2000) used in the then new third generation ,Escort Zetec-E (Zeta) engine, (1992-2004) Volvo SI6 engine, designed by the ,Volvo Cars, subsidiary. Production began in May 2006, used in ,Ford,, ,Volvo,, ,Jaguar, and ,Land Rover, products. Volvo badged production moved to ,Sweden, and ,China, in March 2015. So even if you buy an “American” car it may have a Welsh engine!. Is a Volvo made in China with a Welsh engine really a Swedish car? I honestly think the days when you can talk about “American” or “European” or “Japanese” cars are gone. Probably all you can say is that you have the US version of a car. This is from “,Forbes “Full-size pickup trucks are a uniquely American phenomenon, a symbol of Uncle Sam's bravado and brawn. And the Ford F-150 is the biggest U.S. flag-bearer of all. Manufactured in Michigan and Missouri, it's been the best-selling vehicle in America for more than three decades. But if you want to buy a truly "American-made" vehicle -- and a ,Cars.com ,survey says more Americans do -- you might be better off purchasing a Toyota Camry. It turns out ,the Japanese carmaker's flagship sedan actually has more domestic content in it than the Ford pickup and in fact, ranks first in ,Cars.com's annual American-Made Index,. The American-Made Index takes into account three key factors to determine how "American" cars are, including the percentage of parts that come from "domestic", ,sources,, where they are built and total sales (a U.S.-built vehicle that sells in higher numbers is considered more American than, say, a niche model built here). Models with domestic-parts content ratings below 75 percent are disqualified,. The federal government defines domestic content as parts that are built in the U.S. or Canada (good) but not Mexico (bad). By this measure, two Toyota models -- the Kentucky-built Camry and the Indiana-built Sienna minivan -- rank first and second. ,Ford's best-selling pickup truck doesn't even make the cut any more because its domestic parts content fell to 70 percent when it was redesigned for the 2015 model year.,” See what I mean - the best selling vehicle in the USA does not officially qualify as an American product!

What screams "I'm upper class"?

A few years ago when I managed a shooting centre I checked the diary and noted that I had a couple of people booked in at 10:00 for some clay shooting tuition. No problem, they had booked 2 hours so I threw a couple of boxes of clays and a few hundred shells in the back of the Land Rover and waited for my clients. About 10 to ten a beat up old Volvo estate pulled up outside the clubhouse and a man in his fifties and a boy of about 15 got out and came indoors. The man took his Hunter wellies off at the door and I noticed that his socks were full of holes. They completed all the necessary paperwork and I established that they just wanted a bit of tuition before the game shooting season started and they wanted to use their own guns. I asked them to bring them in so I could do a quick safety check before we ‘went live’. He walked out to the car in his holey socks and brought in 3 old but quality gunslips. Having put all the guns on the counter I realised that there was a Holland & Holland, a Purdey and a Rigby. That’s like 2 Rolls Royces and a Bentley. All good so off we went, they each put about 200 bangs down range, hitting about 50/50. The old boys gun handling was a bit iffy to start with but otherwise no problem. We headed back to the clubhouse and put the kettle on while I worked out the bill. He produced a cheque from his pocket and said ‘I’m afraid I’ve only got one my wife’s cheques’. I was about to say something when I saw that the cheque had been presigned and was drawn on Coutts Bank, at the time the Queens bankers. You don’t ask for a card with a Coutts cheque, if you can afford an account with them they will honour anything. As I was making sure the cheque was completed OK I noticed the account holders name, ‘The Viscountess XXXXX of YYYYY, Household Account’. The Viscount was of course my client and the young lad his heir. Scruffy car, holey socks, Coutts bank, quality guns, modest behaviour, now that guy was real Upper Class without a doubt. I checked him out on Wiki a few years later and discovered that not only was he a hereditary Viscount he was also a retired Lord Justice of Appeal, a High Court judge. That’s what you call class, sadly no longer with us, but that 15 year old lad is now a Viscount.

What should I buy, a Volvo S60 or a Saab 9-3?

Are Saab still making cars? I thought they bit the dust after failing to collaborate with GM back in 2003. I just checked that with wiki and apparently they had a brief resurgence in 2013. Bearing in mind Saab are no longer in business (making servicing and repairs a bit difficult) I would surmise that Volvo would be a far better option. Notwithstanding the Volvo is a way better car anyway.

Who makes better cars: Germans or Japanese?

I see a lot of these questions and am increasingly puzzled. If you look at the car industry it is apparent that there is really no longer any such thing as “German” cars “Japanese” cars and so on. Take the new Jaguar e-pace a car which has had excellent reviews and looks pretty good. Here is what wiki says about it “The car is ,built, in Graz, Austria, by Magna Steyr and from 2018 is also scheduled to be ,built, by Chery ,Jaguar, Land Rover, JLR's joint venture with partner Chery, in Changshu, China.” So a Jaguar! - proper British car?, here is a car made in Austria by a company owned by an Indian conglomerate. Not terribly British it it. Volvo have a car plant in the USA. Are Volvos built in America by a company now owned by the Chinese really Swedish?. Are Hondas built in the USA Japanese cars?, are BMW’s built in South Africa and the USA German cars?. Are Toyotas built in Slovakia really Japanese? When Tesla build their German plant will Tesla’s suddenly become German cars? From the Mercedes Benz web site “,The worldwide production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars extends to four continents, has been considerably expanded in recent years and continues to grow. Here is an overview followed by details of the Sindelfingen plant. Vehicle plants: Bremen/Germany East London/South Africa Hambach/France Iracemápolis/Brazil (from 2016) Kecskemét/Hungary Rastatt/Germany Sindelfingen/Germany Tuscaloosa/USA Passenger car assembly locations (e.g. Completely/semi–knocked-down: delivered parts kits are locally assembled): Bangkok/Thailand Ho Chi Minh City/Vietnam Jakarta/Indonesia Pekan/Malaysia Pune/India External partners/commissioned production and assembly: AM General, Mishawaka/USA (from summer 2015) Magna Steyr, Graz/Austria Valmet Automotive, Uusikaupunki/Finland Joint ventures: Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd., Beijing/China: Joint venture with BAIC Motor Cooperation with Renault-Nissan: Aguascalientes/Mexico (from 2018) Decherd/USA Novo mesto/Slovenia Powertrain plants: Affalterbach/Germany (Mercedes-AMG GmbH) Arnstadt/Germany (MDC Technology GmbH) Berlin/Germany Cugir/Romania (StarTransmission) Hamburg/Germany Kölleda/Germany (MDC Power GmbH) Sebeş/Romania (Star Transmission) Stuttgart-Untertürkheim/Germany You will note that most of these are outside Germany. Some Mercedes models share an engine with Renault. Would you consider a Mercedes using a Renault engine assembled in the Vietnamese plant to be an example of German car building ? No, sorry folks, all you Americans complaining about poor reliability and expensive parts for BMW and Mercedes seem to be forgetting most these models you buy are made in the USA. They are far more “American” than these cars. 10 'American' Cars That Are Really Made Overseas

How, where, and when will self-driving driving cars be legalised?

Q:, ,How, where and when will self-driving cars be legalised? A: There is a lot of work going on in this area. From the Waymo Wiki: Legislation, has been passed in four U.S. states and ,Washington, D.C., allowing driverless cars. The state of ,Nevada, passed a law on June 29, 2011, permitting the operation of autonomous cars in Nevada, after Google had been lobbying in that state for robotic car laws. The Nevada law went into effect on March 1, 2012, and the ,Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, issued the first license for an autonomous car in May 2012, to a ,Toyota Prius, modified with Google's experimental driverless technology. In April 2012, ,Florida, became the second state to allow the testing of autonomous cars on public roads, and ,California, became the third when Governor ,Jerry Brown, signed the bill into law at Google Headquarters in ,Mountain View,. In December 2013, ,Michigan, became the fourth state to allow testing of driverless cars on public roads. In July 2014, the city of ,Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, adopted a robotics ordinance that includes provisions to allow for self-driving cars. In December 2015, the California Department of Motor Vehicles issued long-anticipated proposed regulations governing autonomous vehicles, and invited public comments on the draft regulations at meetings in Sacramento on January 28, 2016, and in Los Angeles on February 2, 2016. If adopted, the regulations would require self-driving cars to have a steering wheel and pedals, and a human driver onboard who holds an "autonomous vehicle operator certificate." They would also hold the occupant responsible for accidents and violations of traffic laws, regardless of whether or not they were at the wheel. The DMV summarized its perspective by stating, "Given the potential risks associated with deployment of such a new technology, [we believe] that manufacturers need to obtain more experience in testing driverless vehicles on public roads prior to making this technology available to the general public." Lobbying by project manager Chris Urmson from Google in the US Senate is underway to change this. So as you can see, there is a great deal of work going on, and it is going to take a while for the legislation to shake out. But things are likely to change a lot quicker than any of us are ready for. With a number of auto manufacturers saying that they are ready to deliver fully autonomous vehicles by 2020 (Ford, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo) there will be a lot of pressure on legislatures to come to conclusions that the market will support. But both companies and legislatures are risk averse, so it won’t happen immediately.

Why don’t the 1994-1997 X300 Jaguar XJ’s have any cup holders?

I have been driving since 1961 and have had a variety of motor cars, mostly my own but some company cars. I have NEVER owned or driven a vehicle with a cup holder. I cannot imagine any circumstance when I would use or need a cup holder. I also cannot understand how a liquid stays in a cup when on the move. I am going to assume you are from the USA, so I will post this extract from the Wiki entry for cup holders, “In Europe, cup holders in cars are not used as much as in the United States and are viewed with amusement or contempt by some motorists. It is actually a legal offense to drink from a cup while driving in many countries. However, as most cars are now built for a global market which includes the United States, many cars in Europe do feature cup holders” So I suspect the answer is that in the early 1990’s when the Jaguar was designed it was not considered to be something that was needed or wanted by most owners. (Stop Press - there is mention of a cup holder in the owners manual of my 2002 Volvo C70. As mine doesn’t have one it was obviously an optional extra!)
