The Boss 429 was first sold in 1969 and I actually saw one at a dragstrip and it was red. They were only sold in 1969 and 1970. The insurance industry and EPA got into the auto industry and these high po car engines ended. Also, NASCAR decided to eliminate big block engines and turned to 350 cubic inch small block engines. I think NASCAR is at 355 cubic inches today and Ford designed a new NASCAR only engine a few years back. Around 1971 Ford started offering to the public NASCAR high performance big block engines all the part combinations and even books on what horsepower, cam cylinder heads. All this secret stuff was now publically available. The Ford Torino was available in 1970 with a 429 Cobra Jet a lot less horsepower. This was upped to the 460 V-8 engine and this was discontinued in 1976. Lincolns had the 460 V-8 all the way to 1979. The Boss 429 was a unique engine capable of incredible horsepower. I think around 1994 there was a Boss 8 liter engine available but not through the normal network. Too many people dying on the highways and EPA rules made these engines obsolete over night.
Well, the Boss was rated at 375 HP from the factory *wink wink* In reality, dyno testing showed that it was putting down nearly 500 HP. Even with shoddy 70s era tires, the Boss should have little trouble taking the Cobra in the 1/4. The Cobra with its modern tires should get the jump off the line, and probably hold the lead through the first 1/8th mile…but game over after that. If we’re putting modern tires on the Boss as well, then…not much of a race. Cobra is going to get embarrassed.
I think these two would be a bit controversial. Ford Mustang GT390: The only reason anyone might know it is because it’s a movie car, from Bullitt. It came with the 390ci FE V8 making 335hp. Next is the Ford Mustang Boss 429. And only because it’s overshadowed by the Shelby GT500. The severely underrated Boss 429 was saddled with a ,735CFM ,Holley 4bbl carburetor. IIRC, it was rated for 375hp and 450lb-ft, but dyno tests have shown it to make at least 450hp and 500lb-ft. These cars trade for $400,000 regularly. It was created only to homologate the motor for NASCAR with the semi-hemi heads. The AMC muscle cars are pretty much unknown. The Javelin Go-Pack was fairly potent with the 390ci V8 making 315hp. Same applies to the shorted, 2 seat AMC AMX Go-Pack, with the same engine.
An old friend I've worked with on a local car show had an insane collection. Anyways he still has his Original invoice. So with a few options, still under $5k.
The answer isn't that straightforward. At one point in the movie one of the characters asks/states that it is a 1970 429,with the main character correcting him and by just replying 69,well here is one recent auction result for a 69 Mustang Boss 429 1969 FORD MUSTANG BOSS 429 - 178661- Barrett-Jackson Auction Company - World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions Putting aside that somewhat ambiguous dialogue about it being a Boss 429 aside, the actual car used is not a Boss 429.The car in the movie is more then likely a 69 Mustang Mach 1. A factory original Boss 429 from 69 did not have a rear spoiler, the hood scoop would have been much larger to accommodate the enormous engine, also the hood scoop pins are not a match to the Boss 429.And to top it off I am pretty sure that the steering wheel is a Shelby wheel. Not sure if this came on Mach 1s but they definitely didn't come stock on any 429 I've looked Into. Here is an example of what a very high end 69 Mach 1 can sell for 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 for Sale And here is a listing with a wide range of Mach 1s of varying condition and rarity 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 for Sale So I guess my answer would be that depending on which 69 Mustang is his, then the price could be anywhere from 30 thousand to 600 thousand USD.
Tough call, here. I’ve always loved the 1969 and 1970 Mustang Sportsroof styling, and the Boss 429 is an expensive and rare option. Maybe ,too, expensive and rare to drive and enjoy. So, I’d go with the Charger, with a 4 speed and the “SE” trim level. Probably with a 440. But a Hemi would be OK, too. Garage queens suck. Drive ‘em, and enjoy ‘em. That’s what they’re for.
If you’re buying a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 or Boss 302 or Boss 429, the only - and I’m serious, ONLY - thing with which you should be concerned is this: does this car show up in the registry of known cars of this type? That’s it. For the Boss 429, that’s ,Boss 429 World Registry. Locating information about historical Boss 429 Ford Mustang vehicles. For the Boss 302, that’s ,The BOSS 302 Registry For the Mach 1, that’s ,Mustang Mach1 Registry If you have a car that’s a known car, that’s in the registry, that’s numbers matching… you can have literally driven the thing to the moon and back, and it won’t have any impact on value. If you have a car that looks like a Mach 1, or a Boss, but it’s NOT in the registry? Sorry dude, that’s just not going to be as interesting. You can sell it, you can maybe even get decent money for it, but that’ll all be based on how pretty it is, and how little the buyer cares about getting the real deal.
The 1969 (and 1970) Ford Mustang Boss 429 came with, you guessed it, a 429 cubic inch motor. Factory ratings were 375 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. However it was very underrated, and according to most sources, the engine actually did produce more than 500 horsepower from the factory. The engine is also slightly detuned from the version used in NASCAR, so some very small changes can yield some very big results, with 600+ horsepower being extremely easy to obtain.
