When did airbags become mandatory for automobiles in the United States?

Dual front airbags became mandatory on cars starting on September 1, 1997 for the 1998 model year. Pickup trucks got until September 1, 1998 for the 1999 model year. Airbags were phased in on most vehicles several years before that though. Here’s a timeline: About 1970: A mandatory airbag bill is first discussed. It will get postponed many times. Airbag technology was “ready” by the early 1970s but wasn’t widely implemented until decades later. 1974–1976: GM offers dual airbags on a few of their full size cars. 10,000 are sold in 3 years, a miniscule number compared to the whole automotive market. ,These GMs are the only pre-1984 vehicles sold to consumers that are equipped with airbags. From 1977–1983, no vehicle sold in the US had airbags. 1984: Mercedes-Benz offers a driver airbag on its full size S-Class models. July 11, 1984: A law is passed that will require driver airbags or automatic seat belts on 10% of 1987 model cars, 25% of 1988 model cars, 40% of 1989 model cars, and all 1990 model cars. Trucks, SUVs and vans were exempt from this standard. Through the second half of the 1980s, a number of luxury cars made airbags optional or standard. All Mercedes Benz cars sold in the USA beginning in the 1986 model year had a standard driver airbag. By the 1989 model year, several different cars had driver airbags as standard, including most high-end imported luxury cars. Passenger airbags were still extremely rare. Most cars initially went the automatic seat belt route when that standard kicked in; less than 10% of 1989 model cars had a driver airbag, and less than 1% a passenger airbag. No trucks, vans or SUVs yet had an airbag. 1990 was the first model year that driver airbags were widely available in non-luxury vehicles. This was the year that Chrysler put a driver airbag on every car it built in the USA, including the lowly Dodge Omni. Ford made a driver airbag standard on several of their most popular cars. Most luxury cars had a driver airbag, with only the Jaguar XJ and the Cadillac Brougham not being airbag equipped in this class. Still, a majority of cars, probably 70%, did not have an airbag. 1992 was the first model year where a majority of new cars had a driver airbag, but passenger airbags were still almost the exclusive domain of luxury cars, though the Ford Taurus did introduce an optional passenger airbag this year. Carmakers found that putting an airbag in gave them a marketing advantage, and the automatic seat belts were inconvenient (remember, the standard required automatic seat belts ,and/or ,a driver airbag). December 18, 1991: The ISTEA (Interstate Transport Efficiency Act) is signed, which mandated dual airbags by the dates shown at the top of the post. Because, by this point, most car buyers valued safety, it was a marketing advantage to provide airbags before this date. By the 1995 model year, a vast majority of new cars came with standard dual airbags. Trucks, vans, and SUVs started getting airbags in the early 1990s. The first minivan with a driver airbag was the 1991 Chrysler minivans; by ‘94, all minivans had a driver airbag, and the Chrysler minivans upped the ante again that year with standard dual airbags. By ‘95, half of minivans had dual airbags; by ‘96, the vast majority; and the only ’97 minivan without dual airbags was the Ford Aerostar, a more utilitarian model then in its last year. Ford, GM, and Dodge made full-size vans at this time. Ford made a driver airbag standard on its full size van in ‘92, GM in ‘94, and Dodge in ‘95. Passenger airbags came to the GM mid-size vans (Astro/Safari) in ‘96, the Ford and GM full size vans in ‘97, and the Dodge full size vans in ‘98. Pickup trucks started getting driver airbags in ‘94, most had them in ‘95, and by ’96 only the Mitsubishi Mighty Max didn’t have one. Passenger airbags were phased in ’97 and ‘98. SUVs started getting driver airbags in the 1993 model year, with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Again, it went fast; by the ’96 model year all SUVs had at least a driver airbag. Passenger airbags started being phased in in earnest on SUVs in ‘95, and by ’97 all but the Chevy Blazer and Land Rover Defender had one. To my knowledge (these may exclude some very low volume and/or exotic vehicles) The last ,car ,without an airbag is the 1995 Kia Sephia. The last with only a driver airbag is the 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, which ended production in August 1996. The last ,mass-market ,(non-luxury) ,consumer vehicle ,without an airbag is the 1996 Mitsubishi Mighty Max. The last ,consumer vehicle ,without an airbag is the 1997 Land Rover Defender. The last ,consumer vehicle ,with only a driver airbag is the 1998 Toyota T100.

Americans who have visited Australia, what was the most surprising thing to you while visiting there?

What surprised me about Australia? I LOVE AUSTRALIA! Upon my three visits to the Australian continent, I found our trustworthy allies to be very welcoming people, energetic and full of life, completely endearing and lovable characters. The country has some of the most gorgeous coastline in the world and a fascinating ecosystem. I found more cultural similarities to the U.S. than differences. But despite my diligent research before visiting any foreign country, there are always a few aspects that surprise me. (The enormous waves at Surfers Paradise, one place I had to see in Australia) Top 10 surprises: It’s massive! The taste of Vegemite Sydney is expensive! The high cost of driving The extremely low population density Traffic stops Lord Howe Island The price of flying Slang words Greeks 1.) The size of Australia Being an overly ambitious traveler, I had originally planned on touring the entire east coast from Melbourne to the Cape York Peninsula, followed by a drive across the wilderness to Perth so I could explore the west coast. I’ve taken similarly lengthy trips in America, I’ve driven every mile of interstate in the United States, and thus I figured all of Australia was able to be conquered in one trip. Since America is the fourth largest country in the world, just how big could Australia be? It’s an island. And then I prepared for the trip by doing some calculations. The driving distance from Melbourne to Brisbane alone is 1,104 miles (1,776 km). That two-day road trip is equivalent to driving from Los Angeles to Amarillo, Texas, and that will only take you from southeastern Australia to about halfway up the east coast! I did manage to see all of the east coast as planned. Melbourne to Perth was more like 2,117 miles (3,407 km), like traveling from Los Angeles all the way to East Tennessee (something we did often in my youth over the span of five days). It would take weeks just to drive to the west coast and back, and I was only staying for two weeks. Needless to say, I remained on Australia’s east coast and saved the drive to Perth for my second of three visits to Australia. I’ve accomplished that now. 2.) Vegemite Yup, I tried it. When in Australia …, right? It’s hard to believe anyone can stomach this thick, pungent, dark brown topping on their toast. I had a very thin layer and it was overpowering! But nine out of ten Australians frequently buy vegemite. Only a tiny fraction of the rest of the world can tolerate the bitterly spicy spread. The food journal ,Gastronomica ,once published an article that stated, “… if you eat Vegemite, you are almost certainly Australian." Aussies say you should go with a thin layer, rather than slathering it on like peanut butter or jelly. Despite that, the taste was far worse than I anticipated. Naturally, I was polite and didn’t make a scene, because we’re all entitled to our personal eating preferences. 3.) Real estate costs in Sydney The average property in Sydney has been as high as 14 times the average annual salary there, ranking second only to notoriously expensive Hong Kong. How can anyone afford a house? Residential prices have reached heights of USD $5,031 per square foot (AUD $76,919 per square meter), nearly four times the outrageous prices in Manhattan! For comparison, Nashville is an extremely popular American city where many have relocated from other parts of America. In one of the most upscale suburbs, where the celebrities and California transplants often relocate, prices average only $237 per square foot. So for USD $1 million (AUD $1.3 million), you could purchase: A 4,219-square-foot (392-square-meter) home in a wealthy Nashville neighborhood with a lot of land … OR only 729 square feet (68 sq. m) in New York City with no land … OR a paltry 199 square feet (18 sq. m) in Sydney! 4.) Vehicular expenses The extra cost of shipping everything to the isolated continent of Australia certainly has an effect on prices. The petrol in Australia is 25% more expensive than the U.S., currently AUD $1.44 per liter (USD $4.22 per gallon). That’s even higher than the average price of fuel in California, the most expensive gasoline of any American state. But the automobile prices in Australia are even more shocking. For instance, an average example would be a brand new 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee that cost USD $38,435 in America (AUD $48,719). That same vehicle sold for USD $63,704 (AUD $80,749) in Australia, 66% higher! For an extreme case, a Jaguar XJ Autobiography that runs USD $75,395 (AUD $95,553) in the states is a staggering USD $214,977 (AUD $272,455) in Australia! 5.) The low population density It’s hard to believe that Australia, the world’s sixth largest country in size, only has 25.4 million people (as of 2019 figures). The state of California has close to 40 million people, despite being only 5% the size of Australia, with some very remote, unsettled areas! So California’s density at 254 residents per square mile is about 28 times denser than Australia at only 9 people per square mile! Only the least dense American states of Alaska, Wyoming, and Montana respectively have a lower density than Australia. 6.) Approaching a police car I learned from my Australian friends that, when pulled over for a traffic stop in Australia, it is actually polite to leave your car and approach the officer’s car as a kind gesture, saving them the walk to your car. I would be terrified to do that in America, arousing suspicion from the officer and putting myself in a dangerous position. As long as I comply, it is very unlikely approaching a police vehicle would escalate to anything worse. But it’s not worth the risk to put myself in that position. An Australian woman was unfortunately killed that way in America because of a misunderstanding. As an American police officer, the likelihood of being seriously injured during a routine traffic stop has put police on edge, although it is very improbable but certainly an increasing probability over the years. Only 0.01% of traffic stops in the U.S. result in an officer being assaulted. With only 2% of those assaults leading to serious injury to an officer, and the other 98% causing little to no injury, that means only 0.0003% of routine traffic stops in the U.S. result in a significant injury to law enforcement. So why are police on edge during a stop? Most officers know a colleague who has been seriously injured in the line of duty, so they’ve understandably become more cautious, more suspicious of odd behavior (unforgivably, they can sometimes be downright unethical). Unfortunately, it’s a reality in a country with a notable gun culture. Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns have been banned in Australia since a massacre in 1996. I only wish America would do the same after each massacre here. There are only 13.7 guns per 100 people in Australia, as opposed to Americans who own 101 guns per 100 people (which is surprising to me, because I seem to know nobody who owns a gun). With the threat of gun violence being used against them, police have unfortunately come to the point where they assume someone approaching their car and not staying put is potentially an aggressive move. Since 1996 and the sweeping gun laws in Australia, their homicide rate has been no higher than 2.05 murders per 100,000 population, and as low as 0.83. Based solely on homicides, that ranks them the 40th safest nation in the world. Based on pre-pandemic numbers, the U.S. is around 4.96 homicides per 100,000, the 94th worst in the world but hardly dangerous by global standards. While these stats don’t put the average law-abiding American at significant risk of murder, it is a notable comparison that the rate is three times higher than Australia. If you are pulled over in the U.S., stay put, do everything they tell you to do, and there is almost no chance of the encounter taking a wrong turn. 7.) Lord Howe Island Almost everyone in America says they want to visit Australia at some point if they can afford it. Most do not because of financial reasons. The continent is a very popular bucket list item for Americans. People talk about seeing Sydney, Melbourne, maybe the Australian Open tennis tournament, surfing the Gold Coast, touring the Australia Zoo, possibly even visiting Cairns or Perth. NOBODY ever says go to Lord Howe Island. Most Americans have never heard of it! Thankfully, I went. I’m trying to do the impossible by becoming the first human to visit every single time zone in the world, including the unofficial time zone of uninhabited, off-limits Howland and Baker islands. Nobody has done it. So back in the 1990s when I discovered that Lord Howe Island had its own time zone 30 minutes later than Sydney, I had to go. Wow, was I glad! Lord Howe Island is 484 miles (779 km) from Sydney by plane, an island in the South Pacific that is unspoiled with jaw-dropping beauty and serenity. The airport on Lord Howe Island was about the size of my kitchen at home, a tiny hut with no rental cars. A local man volunteered to drive me and my father to one of the beaches, for no charge, and then pick us up three hours later for our flight on to Brisbane. We were stunned by his generosity, and by how wonderful the island was. Paradise! Considering my extensive travels to all seven continents, it remains one of my favorite places in the world! 8.) It’s cheaper for Australians to fly to us! The last time we flew from Los Angeles to Sydney, the two cheapest round-trip rates we could find were USD $2,889 and $6,964 (AUD $3,731 and $8,993). An Australian friend of mine was flying from Sydney to Los Angeles that same winter, and found the two lowest rates of USD $1,829 and $2,314 (AUD $2,362 and $2,988), remarkably cheaper! A lot more Americans would visit Australia at those prices! 9.) Slang Sure, prior to my initial visit down under, I was well aware that Australians speak with many slang words. Americans learned some of these terms from the immensely popular Steve Irwin, and the hilarious Hollywood hit ,Crocodile Dundee, (as well as its two painful sequels). Their use of slang is funny and very entertaining. But what most Americans don’t realize, until they visit Australia, is that slang isn’t just used on occasion or to be humorous. It’s literally the ONLY way Australians communicate. We’ve all heard that barbecue is barbie, thanks to Paul Hogan himself. But breakfast is brekky, Christmas is Chrissie, Facebook is Facey, and the list goes on and on and on, some phrases so convoluted as to be nearly indecipherable unless an Aussie translates for you. An American friend of mine who moved to Australia is now a surgeon in Sydney. While visiting him, we asked about the extent to which slang words are used. He said that even within the very serious confines of an emergency room trauma bay, the doctors are still using abbreviations and slang words despite knowing full well what the proper English terms are. It took my friend a decade to get accustomed to it. I’m pretty sure when Prime Minister Scott Morrison gives a very serious speech on national television, he still uses slang words. It’s just the way they do things there, and I love it. 10.) Greeks I was shocked that so many Greek families have located to Melbourne, but I can’t blame them for moving to such a charming city. I later learned that more Greeks live in Melbourne than any other city in the world other than Athens, Greece! In fact, the famous actor Hugh Jackman is a Greek Australian. Bonus observations For a metropolitan area of approximately 5.4 million, Sydney didn’t feel like a big city to me. It felt like a major city, but not massive like Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, all similarly-populated American metros. None of the Australians to whom I spoke had heard of the town of Eucla. While driving across Australia, I had to drive through it in my attempt to become the only human to visit every time zone in the world. Eucla has its own time zone and is 45 minutes later than Perth on the west coast. But no one on the east coast seems to know it exists. I didn’t know you could ski in Australia. Americans get a frequent dose of scenic Australian views in commercials and magazines, from stunning beaches to vast deserts. We never EVER see images of snow-capped mountains. Sure enough, they do exist, and you can actually ski in the Australian Alps.

What are some lesser known facts about Indian Tollywood actor Prabhas of Bahubali fame?

There are several South Indian stars, including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, who have a massive fan following across the world. Their movie releases are not normal events; they are celebrated with much fervour and enthusiasm like a festival. Joining the list of these veteran actors with a crazy fan base is Prabhas, who is now riding high on the success of ,Baahubali 2,. The movie has given the south star recognition across the world. He has made more fans among Bollywood buffs after the release of the first part, and his fan base is growing each passing day! First things first, Prabhas’s real name is Venkata Satyanarayana Prabhas Raju Uppalapati. He was born in Chennai to U Suryanarayana Raju and Siva Kumari couple. He has two siblings and is the nephew of actor Uppalapati Krishnam Raju, who could be described as Tollywood’s very own Shatrughan Sinha. Krishnam Raju is also popularly known as the Rebel Star for his rebellious acting style. While there is a growing clamour for Prabhas to sign a film in Bollywood, what may have gone mostly unnoticed is the fact that he has already made his debut in Bollywood. Yes, he appeared in a cameo role in actor Ajay Devgn’s 2014 film Action Jackson, which was directed by ,Prabhu Deva,. Above pic is only rumoured. Prabhas is engaged to an engineering student, handpicked by his parents. The details about the girl are not widely known. He was supposed to get married last year in December. However, he postponed the wedding due to his Baahubali shooting commitments. Now, that’s called dedication. Not many know that Prabhas loves to be by his books. He also has a personal library at home that he uses when he is not busy shooting. Prabhas’ all-time favourite Telugu film is Bhakta Kannappa, starring his uncle Krishnam Raju, which released in 1976. He loves watching films made by Rajkumar Hirani. He is a great fan of Rajkumar Hirani! Prabhas has watched Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots almost 20 times. He is even a bigger fan of Raju Hirani than most of you! He has watched Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots for almost 20 times reportedly. Mr. Hirani, please take note. In Hollywood, the Baahubali actor is said to be a fan of actor Robert De Niro. Prabhas likes playing volleyball. He was trained by Mr. World 2010, Laxman Reddy for his role in Baahubali. The actor was told to gain a lot of pure muscle sans fat. The makers of the two-part epic series also gifted the actor gym equipments valued at Rs 1.5 crore. Prabhas is the first South Indian star to have his own wax statue at Madame Tussauds, Bangkok. Yes, he has beaten the likes of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan and has got a statue based on his Baahubali character Amarendra Baahubali, wearing the battle armour. Prabhas wanted to be an hotelier and not an actor. Prabhas had admitted in the past that he never thought of becoming an actor, and in fact wanted to be a hotelier instead. He committed to ,Baahubali, for four long years and didn’t sign any movie during that time. Prabhas was so dedicated to the magnum opus that he worked only on the two-part movie for almost four years, and didn’t sign any other project in that period. He has also made a volleyball court in his house to prepare for ,Baahubali In order to work on his physique for the movie, Prabhas played volleyball as part of his exercise regime. He started loving the sport so much that he had built a court in his home so that he could play the game whenever he wants He gained about 30 kg for the movie. Prabhas had apparently gained about 30 kg to get that physique in ,Baahubali,, and for that, he had to undergo a lot of mental as well as physical pressure. What was tougher was to maintain that physique for almost four years. After completing the shoot for the movie, he had gone on a vacation to Europe. And his favourite vacation spot is London. He had turned down an endorsement worth a whopping Rs 5.5 crore! In those intervening four years, Prabhas was offered fitness brand endorsement for Rs 5.5 crore but he apparently rejected it. Why, you ask? Because he wanted to concentrate on Baahubali! After hearing the script, he had so much faith in ,Baahubali, that he never cared about his fee. “Everyone knows that he has given three and half years to the film. Prabhas is a top hero, he had three consecutive hits and producers kept running after him with money, he only focused on Baahubali. He instructed his manager not to demand anything from producers and take anything they give,” Rajamouli said in a statement. While actors of his age are busy churning out movies and cementing their stardom in the industry and among fans, Prabhas is taking one film at a time, and right now it is only Baahubali. As simply put by Prabhas,“One Baahubali is equal to 100 films.” Biodata: Name: Venkata Satyanarayana Prabhas Raju Uppalapati. Which car is the most luxurious car in the world?

5 best luxury cars currently on sale 1. Mercedes-Benz S-Class When Mercedes-Benz sets out to make a new S-Class, the brief is to make the best car in the world. While it might not visually seduce like a Jaguar XJ, the big Merc offers an ownership experience that should be even more appealing. This car does what it’s supposed to do superbly and is functionally exceptional. It was conceived as a long-wheelbase saloon, giving it unprecedented torsional rigidity, and the ride is helped by standard air suspension with adaptive dampers. There’s a choice of four petrol and two diesel engines, with a nine-speed automatic ‘box standard equipment. An advanced 48v hybrid electric powertrain technology used to boost both performance and efficiency in some derivates, while the plug-in hybrid S560e will be the default choice in the range for anyone liable to pay benefit-in-kind tax (it attracts less than half as much BIK tax as any of the other derivative). For those who don't care a bit about such things, meanwhile, there's always the 600-horsepower S63. The S-Class is engineered to operate quietly and comfortably at all times. On both town roads and motorway it could hardly ride better, and it steers directly and precisely, with luxury-appropriate isolation. 2. Range rover The latest Range Rover, the fourth generation of the model, is as revolutionary as any in history, with an aluminium monocoque chassis and an unashamedly luxurious agenda. That it is a luxury car first and 4x4 second is not to run down its capability offroad one jot, however. The spacious interior exudes quality and luxury, the seats are excellent and the driving position is first-rate, making it easy to drive for a car of its size. The heavy bodyshell provides excellent isolation from rough surfaces and, while it doesn’t offer the driving engagement of a Porsche Cayenne, it’s easy to make enjoyable and brisk progress should the need arise. Land Rover's engine range still includes six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel options, without a weak or under-endowed-feeling option among them. The one fleet operators will be interested in, however, is the plug-in hybrid P400e (77g/km, 25 miles EV range) which qualifies for company car tax at just 18% BIK. 3. Audi E-tron Quattro We’re now entering reasonably well established times for the premium electric car. There have been fast ones, very fast ones, big ones, small ones, expensive ones and cheap, and some that even attempt a bit of four-wheel driven versatility. Never has an electric car come along and done onboard luxury better than Audi’s first stab at the zero-emissions template: the E-tron Quattro. This car combines four-wheel drive and a commanding outright performance level with SUV-level space, convenience and usability and with Audi-brand desirability. But what really makes it stand out is how superbly hushed, comfortable and refined it is. When we road tested one, our decibel placed its cabin noise level closer, at a 70mph cruise, to that of a Rolls-Royce Phantom than a Tesla Model X. Audi-brand modern luxury comes with state-of-the-art onboard technology too, of course, while the potential for 150kW public rapid charging, combined with an everyday range of between 200- and 250 miles on a charge, also makes the E-tron a more usable electric car than some of its ilk. Right now, there is no more luxurious electric car in the world than this one. 4. Tesla Model S The first bespoke creation from electric car pioneer Elon Musk’s firm, the Model S is the machine that brought credibility, luxury, pace and useful range to the electric car market. With lesser-capacity derivatives now discontinued, there are effectively only two Model Ss to choose from, both using a 100kWh battery pack - and the 'long range' version getting a claimed 379-mile WLTP-certified range that Tesla claims makes it the longest-legged EV in production. You’ll need to drive the car pretty conservatively to reproduce that range figure in real-world use, but even getting within 80 per cent of it would make this a singularly usable electric car for a great many. The Model S can take off with the ferocity of a super saloon, but even more wonderful is how precisely and effortlessly you can meter out its pace, and how quietly it can be delivered. The car’s credentials as a luxury car are very good, while its large, quiet cabin and massive cargo spaces are also key selling points. For a select niche, it will make financial as well as environmental sense - especially allowing for the 0% benefit-in-kind tax status that has been recently restored to UK-registered EVs. 5. Audi A8 The latest Audi A8 features even more advanced chassis, powertrain and in-car technology than the latest Mercedes S-Class including, when it’s finally switched on, what promises to be the greatest capability for autonomous driving of any production car in the world. There’s a choice of turbocharged engines – a 282bhp diesel or 335bhp petrol – with four-wheel-drive as standard and a 48V electrical system that gives it mild hybrid status. Higher up the model range you'll find the tax-saving six-cylinder petrol '60 TFSIe', whose refinement and effortless responsiveness really boost the appeal of the car's driving experience - as well as the range-topping V8-powered S8 executive express. The A8's quality interior feels like it was built to outlast civilization itself, although it lacks the elegance and ambient warmth of the S-Class. The ride is smooth and the car is easy to drive, although it's not quite as pillowy and luxurious as its key German rival, and not quite the Mercedes' equal in the ways that matter most. You can follow me on quora {,Hassan Sheikh,} to get answers to more such questions, I will give you complete information there. Thank you.

On average, how long do you keep your cars?

Kind of embarrassing but 18 mo or so. My driving is 40 to 45k miles a year. Used car at 100k or so, 95% highway. Buy solid 1 or 2 owner private party with some or all records so you know it was cared for, mainly oil changes. It's all about your situation and what you can spend. Most modern cars are ok to 200k. That said stay away from anything with an oil cap that's crusty or leaking very much. Shows poor maintaining. If you live in the big city there are many pitfalls. Undercarriage wear is more from bad streets. Stop and go is tough on all parts. Basic math- buy new, take care of it & expect 200k with minimal cash per mile. So calculate COST PER MILE for any purchase. Currently have a 2013 Honda Accord. Bought used $17k, 4 yr loan, 26,000 miles. Expect 4 yrs to go 180k more so low 200's in miles. The Honda will hold together well & tires, oil, trans fluid changes are cheap insurance. As Jesus said “take care of your ass for it bears you”. Change your oil & put quality synthetic in it. Cheap oil ruins more engines than anything besides overheating (#1 cause of eng fail). My experience in order from 1975. 1967 Olds Cutlass 442, 70 Cadillac, 71 Camaro 6 cyl, 78 Toyota Corolla, 86 SUBARU, 73 Cadilac, 73 VW Beetle Baja, 85 Toyota PU new, 91 Toyota Corolla, 91 Alfa 164 (awsome), 89 Jaguar xj, 89 VW Golf, 86 Peugeot 505, 99 Subaru Forester( best snow car ever), 2000 BMW 323 Coupe, 2007 Subaru Legacy awd, 2013 Honda Accord Coupe. 1988 VW Cabriolet convertible toy. So experience with lots of makes. Note few domestic makes. Still dont trust them but they're improving. Dont get me started! Dad worked for GM for 30 yrs teaching techs how to deal with new systems that the Germans n Japs had already sorted but GM had to reinvent. His boss drove his 85 company car 175 mi from Omaha to Grand Island Ne and pulled into the Olds dealer with a blown trans. 186 miles… Brand new car. Delivered to the region boss of AC Delco parts! Friend has a 2 yr old F150 with bad oil pump at 26k. So buy low mi used, let someone else eat the 1st yr depreciation of 1/3 cost and bank for the next one.

Why were swing wing aircraft not made common? What were the disadvantages?

Hello there, Practically all swing-wing aircraft were military. They were designed and implemented during the period when jet engines could not give sustained supersonic performance due to being either of turbojet design, or of low bypass ratio insufficient to permit high efficiency across the entire flight envelope. Early swing wing jets were descendant of the war-time German Messerschmidt P-1101 (kudos Juan !) which was able to have its wing angle set before missio. The Bell X-5, the first swing wing jet, was a completed example able to swing its wings in flight - it was complicated though, as the centre section of the wing moved forwards and backwards as the wing moved through its sweep angle range, to preserve in-flight stability. It flew well enough, though even by then a swing-wing of this type was of inferior performance of the in-service F-86 Sabre, and forthcoming afterburning F-86D Sabre Dog, not to mention the Mach 2 F-100 Super Sabre, and other high performance projects in the works in the 1950’s. One other type which did fly with this wing design was the Grumman XF-10-F Jaguar. And it was ,awful, , but not due to the swing wing - rather this was due to every last system on the plane being horribly underwhelming ! The Westinghouse XJ-40 powering the plane was under-thrust with a dodgy engine control electronics system thanks to incredibly sloppy manufacture, the tailplane design was useless, and Grumman’s set of fixes beggar belief. Overall, the XF-10-F was never proceeded with, but for better or worse it is the ancestor of its illustrious VG descendant, the F-14 Tomcat. The first modern VG type was of course the F-111, and all subsequent VG types are its descendant. NASA worked out that with a fixed wing section which allows the centre of pressure to move around during wing-swinging made it possible to have the cake and eat it - excellent efficiency and low landing speed, coupled with efficient and high speed dash performance at supersonic speeds. All other supersonic swing-wing jet types owe their configuration to the F-111 : MiG-23 and -27 ,Flogger Su-24 ,Fencer Panavia Tornado Dassault Mirage G1 and G8 North American B-1A and B-1B Tupolev Tu-22M3 ,Backfire Tupolev Tu-160 ,Blackjack Grumman F-14A - D Tomcat The Tomcat suffered a bit in its early days from an excessive trim problem at full sweep, and so made use of innovative glove-vanes when wings were to full sweep to minimise supersonic drag through up-trim of the all-moving stabiliators. An oddity among swing wing jets was the Sukhoi Su-22 , which was a VG modification of the earlier Su-17 ,Fitter,. The original featured a heavily swept wing, which while great for transonic supersonic long range flight, was rotten for take off and landing distances at forward strips. By fitment of the swing-wing, takeoff and landing distances were much reduced, and low speed flight efficiency much improved for this type. All wing hard-points were retained in-board of the swinging sections. Why did swing wings never feature on civil types ? Well, there were two theoretical concepts which might have made it….. The first was the Mach 3 (!) Boeing 2707 concept : Gorgeous, impressive, and very nearly built - sadly it never made it into production. Perhaps fortunately too ! The other conceptual commercial VG type was entirely fictitious, though aeronautical engineers all feel that it was entirely practical, and perhaps should have been built. This was the Carreidas C160, designed by Roger Leloup as a central plot point of the Tintin comic book ,Flight 714, : I remain deeply in love with it to this day. Its a mach-2 business jet, made with 1960’s and 1970’s technology. To give an idea of the technical challenges of the swing wing, here’s picture of a Tornado cutaway : That wing box is MASSIVE !!!! Its awful to service and maintain - the hydraulic system needs purging and testing religiously every x 100 hours. Or less. And that is for the Western Fighters. How reliable the Soviet types are is not known…but it probably was worse in terms of reliability…. It’s also HEAVY ! Swing wings, despite the gain in flight performance, often featured a drop in overall payload ability unless purposely designed to prefer this e.g. the F-111. Technical complications included under-wing arm-stores pylons able to alter their angle to remain parallel to the fuselage. Soviet swing-wing types, until the Su-22 and Su-24, totally avoided this, designers preferring to keep the external stores on pylons attached to the larger wing roots ! Only Western types made use of this mechanical technology, despite its additional weight gain …. The F-14 Tomcat and Panavia Tornado do deserve special mention. Both made use of Stabilators, where their rear tailplanes, both all-moving surfaces, could act both as ailerons and elevators during both high speed and low speed flight. both also featured very large flaps on the main wings for landing, and the Tornado actually had them as blown flaps, where pressurised air from the engine air compressor was diverted over the flaps to keep air attached to the surfaces by the Coanda effect, and drastically increase effectiveness. Both also did not make use of ailerons, the designer implementing spoilers as roll control on the wings. [Letting it all hang out] [Massive flaps !] So, despite their disadvantages, both of these epitomes of the type were actually ,very, sophisticated aerodynamically ! And last of all - apart from the MiG-23, F-14 and Mirage G-1 - practically ,all, swing wing types are subject to lower G-limits when compared with a fixed wing fighter. This goes a long way to explain why a Northrop F-5 aka MiG-28 in ,Top Gun,, and the A-4 Skyhawk in the same movie can give the F-14 Tomcat a run for its money. The contemporary F-15 Eagle could, of course, wax those two type’s tails in ACMI even before considering the use of a missile. This goes to explain why the IAF prefer using guns - if you can get on the tail of your enemy, a missile can be almost….wasteful ! Swing wings disappeared with the evolution of the high-bypass, high thrust military turbofan engine. The F-14 tomcat was the first beneficiary, and its VG wing was the last gasp of the concept. The F-15 Eagle, and all subsequent fighter make use of their combined power and engine efficiency to render the use of the VG wing moot. The Su-27 ,Flanker, series also has proven how fine design of wing and forebody of the aircraft renders the needs of VG less important. This development was foreshadowed by the LERX (Leading Edge Root eXtensions) which were nascent on the Northrop F-5G Tiger II : And which came to full fruition in the F-17 Cobra, later then in the F-18 Hornet. The same also came about in the YF-16 Fighting Falcon Today, practically all modern fighters use sophisticated computer-designed aerodynamics of fixed wing surfaces to achieve their design goals. The swing wing, while fondly remembered and avidly modelled in plastic and other media by aircraft nuts (like me) are now no longer in active use, excepting the Su-24, Panavia Tornado IDS and GR4, Tu-160 Blackjack and Rockwell B-1 these days. Hope this helps to understand the technology better.

What are the greatest cars of all time?

Even if you are free to buy any car, there are still many things to be considered, like budget, requirements, comfort, safety, seating capacity, ground clearance and others. As nothing has been mentioned about the above parameters, I am writing it according to the budget. Here are some, which I got: Price range: Below 4 lakhs Renault Kwid RXL 1.0 AMT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 24 kmpl) Price Range: 4–8 Lakhs Maruti Suzuki Celerio ZXi (O) AMT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 22 kmpl) Maruti Suzuki Ignis Alpha 1.2 AMT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 20 kmpl) Tata Tigor Revetron XZA (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 20 kmpl) Price Range: 8–12 Lakhs Maruti Suzuki Baleno Alpha 1.2 AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 21 kmpl) Ford Aspire Titanium 1.5 Ti-VCT AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 17 kmpl) Maruti Suzuki DZire ZXi Plus AMT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 22 kmpl) Ford Ecosport Titanium + 1.5L Ti-VCT AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 14kmpl) Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza ZDi Plus Dual Tone (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 24 kmpl) Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Alpha 1.4 AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 18 kmpl) Hyundai Verna 1.6 VTVT SX (O) AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 18kmpl) Skoda Rapid Style 1.6 MPi AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 14 kmpl) Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Alpha 1.3 (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 23kmpl) Price Range: 12–25 Lakhs Honda City ZX CVT Petrol (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 18 kmpl) Honda BR-V V CVT Petrol (seating capacity: 7, mileage: 16 kmpl) Hyundai Creta SX Plus 1.6 AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 15 kmpl) Mahindra Scorpio S11 4WD (seating capacity: 7 or 8) Mahindra XUV500 W10 AWD AT (seating capacity: 7, mileage: 16 kmpl) Hyundai Elantra 2.0 SX (O) AT (seating capacity: 5) Toyota Innova Crysta Touring Sport Petrol AT (seating capacity: 7, mileage: 10 kmpl) Jeep Compass Limited (O) 1.4 Petrol AT (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 17 kmpl) Toyota Corolla Altis VL AT Petrol (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 16 kmpl) Hyundai Tucson 2WD AT GL (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 12 kmpl) Price Range: 25–40 Lakhs Ford Endeavour Titanium 3.2 4x4 AT (seating capacity: 7, mileage: 10 kmpl) Toyota Fortuner 2.7 4x2 AT (seating capacity: 7, mileage: 10 kmpl) Volkswagen Tiguan Highline TDi (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 17 kmpl) BMW X1 xDrive20d M Sport (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 20 kmpl) Skoda Kodiaq Style TDi 4x4 AT (seating capacity: 7, mileage: 16 kmpl) Price Range: Above 40 Lakhs Audi A4 30 TFSi Technology Pack (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 17 kmpl) Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE Petrol (seating capacity: 7) BMW 3 Series GT 330i M Sport Edition (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 16 kmpl) Land Rover Range Rover Ecoque SE Trim (seating capacity: 5) BMW X3 xDrive 28i xLine (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 13 kmpl) Audi A6 35 TFSi Matrix (seating capacity: 5) Mercedes Benz GLE 400 4MATIC (seating capacity: 5) BMW X5 M (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 15 kmpl) Audi Q7 40 TFSi Technology Pack (seating capacity: 7, mileage: 11 kmpl) Volvo XC90 Excellence (seating capacity: 4) Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG (seating capacity: 7) Land Rover Range Rover Sport V8 SC SVR (seating capacity: 5) Jaguar XJ L 5.0 V8 Autobiography (seating capacity: 4) Lexus RX F Sport (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 18 kmpl) BMW 7 Series M760 Li xDrive (seating capacity: 4, mileage: 7 kmpl) Audi A8 L W12 (seating capacity: 4, mileage: 4 kmpl) BMW X6 M Coupe (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 9 kmpl) Audi RS7 Sportback 4.0 TFSi Performance (seating capacity: 4, mileage: 10 kmpl) BMW M6 Gran Coupe (seating capacity: 4) Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive (seating capacity: 5) Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R (seating capacity: 2) BMW i8 1.5 Hybrid (seating capacity: 4, mileage: 47 kmpl) Audi R8 5.2 V10 Plus (seating capacity: 2, mileage: 6 kmpl) Bentley Continental GT Speed (seating capacity: 4, mileage: 6 kmpl) Lamborghini Aventador LP 700–4 Roadster (seating capacity: 2, mileage: 5 kmpl) Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB (seating capacity: 5, mileage: 7 kmpl) Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport (seating capacity: 2, mileage: 4 kmpl) *Mileage may vary from the figures claimed by the company. What are some examples of cars that still maintain similar design throughout decades?

Mercedes Benz G-Class The G-Class has been looking almost the same since its first release in 1979 with only slight modifications and some modern features. So it’s 3 decades old and now reaching towards 4. (1979 Mercedes G-Wagen) (The latest form of G-Class) Porsche 911 The first generation 911 had maintained its design from 1963 until 1993. The later generations (993 and afterwards) have different design despite being heavily influenced by the early 911. It’s exactly 3 decades. (1964 Porsche 911, basically like the 1963 model) (1989 Porsche 911, production ended in 1993) Land Rover Defender Although the original name was not Defender, the early ones are basically the older Defenders. It began in 1983 as Land Rover 110, then followed by Land Rover 90 (Basically the same car with few differences), as well as the 127 and 130. In 1990, it was sold as Land Rover Defender. The Defender’s last production is in 2016, so that’s 3 decades. (1983 Land Rover 110) (Last version of Land Rover Defender) Volkswagen Beetle This iconic car started production in 1938 as part of Hitler’s “people’s car” program (Called Volkswagen Type 1 back then). In the 1960s it became popular worldwide and it the 70s it stopped production in most parts of the world. However, the classic Beetle (not to be confused with the New Beetle, which is a retro attempt of the original Beetle) was still in production in Brazil and Mexico. In Mexico, production ended in 2004, and in Brazil it ended in 2006. If we include Mexico and Brazil, that means it’s almost around 7 decades old.
