Although nominally a member of the Toyota Yaris family, the Yaris Verso was based on a related but separate model known in Japan as the FunCargo. The car was a wilfully strange-looking but supremely practical small MPV. This is a 2000 UK brochure. #carbrochure #Toyota https://t.co/Orc1WvhfHF

When Toyota entered India in 2000. They focused on MPV and D segment lines where other brands focused on hatchback & Sedan segment class and made strong presence on those segment. But Toyota arrived late in hatchback and sedan segment where others got strong presence on it. That's why they are struggling in those segments. In MPV, D segment and above Toyota vehicles are the clean winner. Eg: Even 15 year old qualis, has a better resale value. Coming to Yaris, city , verna and ciaz already dominated this segment. So it is tough to compete in this segment. In my opinion, city is the biggest challenge for yaris because if you see the other regions like APAC (city-vios) or in Middle East, (yaris - city) are the direct competitors. In terms of safety and long term reliability, resale value, these two are best and direct competitor.
Toyota. Don’t get me wrong. Toyota focuses on safety, durability and reliability worldwide and even in Indian version of cars. To meet these three aspects and to keep competitive pricing with respect to it’s competition, toyota does away with many additional accessories and features which strip the toyota vehicles of style and hence they are not at all a popular choice by Indian youth. (In fact, in most of the quora answers from Indian writers regarding cars, you will hardly find any mention of a toyota vehicle while the trend is just reverse when you see similar from other countries.) As for your query, The entry level etios family of cars have received 4 star Global NCAP rating with ‘Stable Body Shell”. The second point is important in a crash or rollover of vehicle. ,Made-in-India Etios gets four-star Global NCAP crash test rating,. Just note one thing here, VW polo vivo scored three stars in the same test. Their C2 segment sedan Yaris got five star in ASEAN NCAP rating better than Honda city and equivalent to Civic while costing a good 7.5 lakh less than Honda civic. ,Toyota Yaris scores 5 stars in ASEAN NCAP safety rating Toyota Innova Crysta: The best selling MPV model from Toyota in India has got 4 star safety rating for both adult & Child occupants in ASEAN NCAP crash test. The higher version of crysta with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) has received 5 stars. ,http://www.aseancap.org/v2/?p=3691 Toyota Corolla Altis, the premium sedan from Toyota has received 5 stars in both ASEAN & EURO NCAP ratings. ,http://www.aseancap.org/v2/?p=3481,. ,Official Toyota Corolla 2013 safety rating results It is only that Toyota doesn’t brag about the safety of their cars like every other manufacturer who sell their cars in India. Toyota Awarded for Excellent Safety Standards and Continuous Safety Improvement by Southeast Asia's Vehicle Safety Assessment Programme Even the staunchest critic of Toyota would also agree that if driven properly and the annual servicing done regularly, toyota cars refuse to fail. You will find a lot of 10 years or older toyota qualis/innovas/ etioses/corollas with more than 2 lakh kilometers in their odometer while you will find only a handful of Volkswagen or Skoda cars at this point and almost no Hyundai cars. They are bulit to last. Tata is the first Indian brand which has announced a policy to make at least 4 star rated vehicles. This is a very good initiative but the longevity of these vehicles are to be time tested. Edit: ,Since few comments mentioned that Toyota is not budget friendly in India, let us do a little maths. Toyota doesn’t offer any car model in the most budget friendly hatchback sections (A &B1). Their offering in Budget cars are ,Etios as Sedan, Etios Liva as B2 hatch and Etios Cross as Crossover hatch. ,Now as I mentioned, all these cars have secured Four Star NCAP safety ratings for their Indian versions, too( This is important as the European version of Suzuki swift gets 4 & 5 stars depending on variants but the Indian version got only 2). In B2 section of hatch back cars, the other Indian models which have at least four star NCAP ratings are ,VW Polo, Hyundai i20, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon(only car in this segment with 5 star global NCAP ratings) . Now, as on date, price of Toyota Etios Liva ranges between Rs 5.67 lakh to 6.69 lakh for the petrol variant and 7 lakh to 7.84 lakh for diesel(Ex Showroom, Delhi). Hyundai elite i20 is priced between Rs 5.5 lakh- Rs 8.06 lakhs for petrol and Rs 6.88–9.31 lakhs for diesel variants (all manual, ex showroom, Delhi). VW Polo costs 5.75 lakhs - 7.69 lakh for the petrol manual and 7.27–9.14 lakhs for diesel manual models. Vitara Brezza & Nexon are costlier by at least 1 lakh rupees from the entry levels. Obviously, the cheapest car in this section, Tata Tigor is yet to be tested by NCAP. If you compare the lower variants of these cars, they have similar features and are similarly priced. Considering Toyota’s legendary durability, reliability and low maintenance than similarly priced cars from other manufacturers, Toyota, in the long run beats it’s competitors hands down in cost of ownership. The higher versions of i20 and polo are feature rich, but are costlier than the highest version of etios liva, too by at least 1 lakh rupees. Hence, it boils down to the fact that you pay more to get more features but as far as safety is concerned, toyota is the cheapest car to own in the most budget segment where safety matters.

Petrol/Diesel? 7 seater/5 seater? SUV/Sedan? Automatic/manual? With a budget of 18 lakhs, there is a wide range of cars to choose from 7 seater with somewhat good off roading abilities - Choose between the Mahindra XUV500 or Tata Hexa. Tata Hexa which a better 3rd row and boot space with the 3rd row up. Hexa is more MPV whereas XUV500 is a SUV For a 5 seater, Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier. Hyundai Creta being the chart topper, obviously is a great choice. Tata Harrier being the newest, ...

In India, Toyota Motor Corporation first arrived in October 1997 through a joint venture with the Kirloskar Group, setting up shop by the name of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited. With its headquarters located in Bangalore, Karnataka, Toyota India is responsible for handling manufacture and sales of ,Toyota cars in India,, and it presently ranks amongst the top 6 car-manufacturers in the country together with Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra and Chevrolet. Starting with the widely popular MPV Qualis in 1999, the Japanese auto-clan of Toyota has introduced some truly spectacular models in the Indian car-market over the past decade and a half, creating itself a formidable fleet of cars that is not easy to rival even for those domestic manufacturers that have had a much longer lifespan in the country to establish their hold over the market. Although the Qualis was discontinued in 2005, newer and more alluring models like the Innova, the Etios twins, the Fortuner and the Camry were brought in for local production, joined from time to time by their dashing siblings from overseas like the Prado and the Land Cruiser, arriving in India as imported models. Currently, the fleet of Toyota cars in India features Toyota Etios Liva, Toyota Etios Cross, Toyota Platinum Etios, Toyota Glanza and Toyota Yaris bringing the total to 12.
Toyota are flexible on names and exact models that they market. Just to be clear this is the current line up in Malaysia of passenger cars. None are an SUV or MPV or cross over, just dependable Toyota cars Yaris RM80k Toyota Vios RM82k Toyota Corolla Altis RM124k Camry RM196k I have the current Yaris 1.5G and the Corolla Altis 2.0V. They are at very different price points and have different equipment. The Corolla is fast, the Yaris is just fast around town. Price wise the Yaris starts with the 1.5J at RM70k up to RM83k for the 1.5G that I have. The Corolla is a lot more. At 70k it competes with Malaysian made small cars such as Perodua Alza at 60k. There is a higher quality perception aroind Toyota, though in fact Perodua manufactiring is by Daihatsu which is part of Toyota. However, I digress. So why not a Vios? Looks and packaging. Vios has an ugly butt and people want good quality hatchbacks for town. The Yaris is a cut down Vios so you get nearly all the Vios features without an ugly butt. See what I mean? Some do not agree with me. 38% of Toyota sales in July were Vios, more than Yaris. The features on a Yaris are a 1.5 litre 7 speed CVT transmission and front wheel drive. Excellent around town, goes OK on highway at 120km/hr. It has very good Optitron instruments, a 360 degree parking panoramic camera and a nice stereo and sat nav (the 1.5G) And auto headlights and rear view mirrow. Of course electric windows and mirrors which fold. Automatic Air Conditioning rounds it out. For 2020 it has lane departure warning, pre collision system as well as blind spot monitoring, ABS, 7 air bags etc. LED headlights are great. The seats are comfy but are not leather, not electric and do not have lumbar support. The panel fit and paint quality is high. Toyota really do make a nicely built car. So with all the tech on a small car, the Yaris is selling well. I love mine, well built and solid dependable small hatch for around town, it ticks a lot of boxes.
First and foremost, I myself own a Honda City VX Diesel :) Answering to your question here: Sedan in Diesel (MT) - Honda City/Hyundai Verna (I dont consider any Maruti because they aren’t that safe on road) Sedan in Diesel (Auto) - Volkswagon Vento/Skoda Rapid (personally I would prefer Rapid for its looks. However, both offers superior build quality and performance and aces the competition) Sedan in Petrol (MT/AT) - Honda City any day and night. Toyota Yaris is also a good option here. MPV - Tata Hexa’s base model comes here as the winner for a SUV like MPV. You can also buy Nixon here which is a winner for compact ones. I never consider Ertiga, Ecosport, blah blah as an option. However, Honda WRV is a good option if sunroof is your priority. SUV - Renault Duster (4x4) is the best bet. However, Tata Safari Storme is also a very good option in 4x2 option (My point of putting Storme here is because of the reason that Indian Army replaced the outgoing Gypsy after 2 years of rigorous testing of Safari Storme in every terrain) Why I opted for City Diesel? 1. Fuel efficiency: My monthly running is close to 3000 km and sometimes over, so I needed fuel efficiency. After 3 months and 9000 km, my car is giving me a mileage of 22.4 kmpl even after driving in upper Himalayas. Ciaz is a tad better here. 2. Safety, Cabin feel and Build quality is great. However, in Safety and Build quality both Vento and Rapid ace here. 3. After sale service: Honda City is still a cheap car to maintain. The diesel post first 10000 kms gets serviced for 5000 INR and then for next 10000 kms for 11000 INR (major service). How I know this? I replaced my Jazz (diesel) for City. Jazz was driven for 65000 kms in 2 years. It gave me an overall mileage of 25 kmpl when I replaced it. 4. Spares: Quiet Cheap in comparison to Maruti. I still own a Maruti car which was bought in 2009. 5. Both Rapid and Vento doesnt offer Sunroof :D 6. Leg space: Class leading leg space at rear seats. Ciaz just aces here. However, Hyundai Verna is cramped at rear seats. So, no leg space and comfort. Hence, I found City as a complete package for my needs and priorities :) The only car that gave me a tough competition was Skoda Rapid because of its 7 speed Dual Clutch Automatic gearbox. Drive that car with this variant and you’ll feel why it gave me a competition (Vento has it too but I didn’t like its look) Hope you chooses the car based upon your needs and priorities. All the best :)
