My old 1981 Citroën CX Pallas D leaving Bergamo in Italy back in 2018. A stunning car and a stunning place to visit. Having a classic car seems to make you more inclined to seek out somewhere nice to take a photo of it. Old cars have given me so many great experiences like this https://t.co/IlxczZisCJ

One of my biggest regrets in life is selling my 1981 Citroën CX Pallas D. Rescued from a barn and it gave me seemingly every bit of trouble it could muster for the few years I had it, but I sold it just as I’d seemingly finally got on top of it. Don’t give up on your projects! https://t.co/LSH70TQKcw

I am a car designer from Germany, and I maintain in the face of common perception that the French can make, and have made some of the most wonderful cars ever. Unfortunately, that wonderfulness is usually mostly ,conceptual, - which means, the cars look and work fantastically well and often in visionary ways while brand new. And then, some component fails before its time, and causes a cascade of catastrophic failures. A simple, little thing, and the chain of disaster is on. We don’t know why this happens so often in French cars, and seemingly never in Japanese cars. In my opinion, the trick to keeping your beloved French car alive is this: know everything about that model. ,Look out for number one., The trouble spots are known, and the internet is full of forums where you can find out about the likely culprit that will be acting up in your car some day. Get that part seen to before it causes its usual havoc. Realise that your car is built for a certain, life span,. For most cars from France, that’s between 130.000 and 180.000 kilometres. Just don’t buy them any older than that. The French take built in obsolescence far more seriously than anyone else, it would seem. Some of the most fabulous cars of all time were French. They deserve that extra attention. If I had the space and money, I’d own all of the following: Citroen ID 19 Citroen DS 23 Citroen SM Citroen CX Turbo or Pallas Citroen 15 CV Renault Alpine, any model Renault 30 Renault Vel Satis Renault Avantime Renault 16 Renault 17 Peugeot 404 Peugeot 504 Peugeot 604 V6 Matra Bagheera Facel Vega Voisin C20 V12 Talbot Lago Delahaye 135 M Bugatti Atalante Bugatti Royale
For me, this one is the winner: the post-facelift 1970s Citroën DS 23 Pallas. But there are a few other close contenders, all Citroën: The Citroën GS: The Citroën CX: The Citroën XM: The Citroën C6: The Citroën C5: And a few cheaper models: Citroën Ami 8 The original Citroën Visa and also the Citroën C4 Hats off to all the folks who designed these cars: Robert Opron, Flaminio Bertoni…
Let’s imagine I was some sultan and chief petrolhead of a nation that’s forced to burn their money because they can no longer find anything else to spend it on, and state protocol requires me to have plenty of cars. Hi there, In terms of the ,best ,use of low drag in car design, there are only 4 contenders in my book, and here they are : Mitsubishi HSR-1 This amazing beast was designed in he late 1980’s using CFD and wind tunnel testing. Its Cd is incredibly low -something like less than 0.15 or something. As a result, its unimpeded by the air, and does a mindblowing 250 km/h with great ease. What makes it even ,more mindlowing, is that it does this using, wait for it : An ordinary Mitsubishi 2000cc 4 cylinder engine !, and unmodified too - all this performance from 1 x 200 hp 2 liter ! This remains the most stunning example of the use of aerodynamics in car design ,to this day !, Mitsubishi’s later HSR’s improved on this performance only slightly. Citroen DS This very famous car was ,literally ,aerodynamically sculpted - apparenty to design it, models of the engine, headlights, wheels, windscreen and seats were frozen into a block of ice, and when solid, then placed in a wind tunnel (resting on the wheel models), and the ice allowed to be melted by the air flowing over it at the simulated cruise speed. For aerodynamic cleanliness, ,La Diesse Pallas Athene ,(Goddess of Science and Technology, no less - a French pun on DS and Goddess - look it up a bit ) resulted in one of the slickest cars ever to put wheel to road - its an automotive icon even today. Oh, and its supercar descendant the ,Citroen SM, deserves a mention too. Citroen Eole This 1980’s concept (based on a Citroen CX) has a soft spot in my heart for combining the lowest imaginable drag with the highest possible practicality. it was ,this close, to being real - and I dearly wish it had. To this day when I design a streamliner I equip it with the Eole’s mechanically raised spats - which allowed it get a fabulously low drag despite having and making use of standard sized car tires for best safety ! The front spats would sty down at speed on a motorway, but then raise both out and up when turning more than a certain amount. The holes relieved low pressure, and actually decreased drag ! It was an incredibly practical, very avant-garde car, in the best of terms. Alfa Romeo 164 One of the cleanest cars I have ever owned, in terms of drag, is the sumptious Alfa Romeo 164 - it has a Cd of 0.28, which is remarkably low. I miss mine very much…. The reason its so low-drag is that it was well designed using a wind-tunnel and with CAD. Fast and comfortable, and nearly silent of wind noise, it was and is a honey of a car. My 2c worth
I had no idea that any cars were equipped with brake shoes these days, my parking brake is automatically applied & activates the same disc calipers as the brake pedal. The only car that I have owned which had a separate parking brake system was a Citroen CX Pallas which had a foot-operated parking brake that operated a separate pair of brake discs & calipers but that was 35 years ago. The last car that I had that had brake shoes was 48 years ago, is it a vintage car that you have?
