ford fusion malaysia Q&A Review

In the U.S., do you consider a person to be unpatriotic for buying a car made by a foreign company (Honda, Volkswagen, etc.)?

Here’s the thing, Honda makes lots of vehicles in the US, the American team this time around developed their NSX supercar in Marysville, Ohio plant. Toyota has plants around as well. Meanwhile my Ford sedan was made in Mexico. Other American vehicles are made in the states, but even so may use foreign parts. I change my Ford Fusion radio for a better one because it had a defect whine on am and fm bands. Randomly common. Made by Sanyo in Malaysia. I took the family minivan radio out to upgrade to a better one with more features etc, and the Honda minivan had a Panasonic of America made radio. At least for Toyota and Honda they may have more domestic parts then American cars made not the states as they were as well. Other than that we all know about VW being cheaters in emissions. You could say those seem unpatriotic. Other than that lots of people can be quite Road hogs in their German cars and horrible drivers just because they are full of themselves. Many German cars nowadays are cheaply made money pits not even made in Germany.

Which multinational companies have produced products to meet location/areal unique cultures or histories?

McDonald’s is known for offering products that are specific to certain countries. In my country, for example, they have a product based on traditional dish called nasi uduk which is only sold in my country. In France, it’s offered with French breakfast menu. Honda has a model that was initially only sold in China called the Honda Jade. It was designed for Chinese consumers in mind. However, the model is now available in Japan and there’s plan to sell it elsewhere. Toyota has a mid-size pickup model called the Tacoma and it’s only sold in North America. Demand for mid-size pickup truck is quite high in USA and Canada. Honda also has a mid-size pickup truck model for North American market called the Ridgeline. Volkswagen has two versions of its Passat model. One is made for European market and the other one is for North American market, which was later also sold in China. Simiarly, Ford had two different models of mid-size sedan. One is for European market (Ford Mondeo) and the other one is for North America (Ford Fusion). The North American one has been discontinued due to the low demand of sedans. Clothing retail, H&M, provides hijabs to meet the growing market of Muslim women. Uniqlo has specific products that specialize in one country. For instance, in my country, they have models that are based on our traditional clothes, batik. IKEA’s canteens are offered with local foods. In my country, they have our traditional food, nasi goreng. In Malaysia, they are offered with nasi lemak. This year, fashion label Gucci released a collection of Mickey Mouse products to commemorate the Chinese New Year, in which it is the year of the mouse. They are primarily targeted for Chinese buyers, though they are sold in multiple countries (Many Chinese like to buy luxuries outside their country because the import tariff is cheaper.) In 2012, Ferrari released a limited edition of their model, the 458, called the 458 China 20th Anniversary. Like its name, it’s only sold in China and only 20 units were made. It marks the company’s 20 years of presence in the country. It features a graphic of a dragon that’s gazing at the Ferrari logo, which is based on an old Chinese idiom which means "the vigor and spirit of the legendary dragon-horse". Similarly, Lamborghini also had a China-only limited edition model called the Murcielago SV China Limited Edition. Only 10 units were made. The orange stripe is meant to symbolize volcanic eruption.

Why do some people still refuse to buy US-made automobiles?

Speaking as a foreigner, there are several reason why US-made automobiles aren’t sold in huge numbers where I live. In Malaysia car ownership costs aren’t cheap. Not only is the excise duty high for completely built up units imported into the country, pushing the prices way up, our road tax is also expensive as well as it is calculated based on engine capacity, which means the bigger your engine displacement, the more you’ll pay. This is why American made cars are not popular here. Take for instance the Ford Mustang. Now I know there is an option for the 2.3L Ecoboost engine, but everybody have said that the 5.0L V8 is the one to have so we’ll go with that. The Mustang costs ,RM 554,366.51 or $137,046, to buy, the road tax costs ,RM 10,909.50 per year, or around $ 2,696.98, ,and the insurance for the car, without a no-claims bonus, would set you back ,RM 14,775.30 or $ 3,652.68,. Now you might think that doesn’t sound a lot, but consider that the average yearly Malaysian household income is around $12,000 before taxes and you’ll see how expensive it is to own one of the US-specific models. And to put things into perspective, you can actually buy a 1,000 sq ft condominium at a reputable location for the price of a Mustang. In fact, the only models from American brands that caught on locally are European-designed vehicles assembled in Thailand, like the Ford Focus & the Ford Fiesta, or the Korean sourced Chevrolet Spark, Cruze & Colorado. At least these cars cost way less than the Mustang or the Camaro or even the Fusion and is priced competitively against its Japanese, Korean & European rivals. But honestly, the amount of Fords & Chevys sold pales in comparison with Toyota & more significantly Honda - the king of all imports in Malaysia.
