60’s cars? So… we’re talking “current to the ‘60s, but circa now”?? Oooookay. I’ve had most of what I’d want again. 1962 Porsche 356B Roadster. I had a ‘60, totally loved it. My 2nd favorite Porsche, ever. I’ll take the ’62 because they’re visibly different than the earlier cars, with a double-grille on the rear deck This color, please. That’s what mine was. 1963 VW Beetle rag-top sunroof coupe. I’ve had 5 ‘63s, it’s my personal fave of all the early Beetles. My last one was light grey, but black is always a good choice. 1966 Chevy Corvair Monza convertible. I’ve had the slightly earlier models, not in Monza, but really like the models after the facelift better, visually. Perfectly suitable as a family car, fun as hell to push hard. Speaking of family cars… the 1965 Ford Galaxy 500 convertible. I don’t want a hot-rod here, a six-cylinder with an automatic would be perfectly fine. Something you can load the family up in and cruise around, enjoying the day. I love the stacked headlights, which is one-year only. And finally…. 1969 Porsche 911 S soft-window Targa This may actually be my favorite 911. I had one, restored it, and wound up selling it in the divorce pre-game show in the early 2000s. At least it went to a good home. Long-hood, but also long wheelbase, and most of the early S quirks sorted by the MFI. And last of the soft-window Targas.
Actually it's right in the middle. A convertible wouldn't be in the mix at all for me, the 64.5 galaxy 500 fastback is on my top 3 vehicles of all time. With a 427 and a 4 speed transmission, I'd be in heaven (assuming it's not a basket case)
You know what I ,don't ,like? All these insincere “Do you like the design and aesthetic of…” troll questions that have popped up on Quora lately. The “questioner" is just going through some list of car names, possibly at random, and asking “Do you like the design and aesthetic of" each one. I don't mind answering sincere questions about classic cars, especially the personal opinion type. But I'll be damned if I'm going to waste my time answering questions that don't really desire an answer. My time is too valuable. Try someone else.
Mmm…. Unusual, I’ve got that in buckets. Let’s start with the 1951 Henry J model from the long-defunct Kaiser Automobile Company Unique grille, spilt windshield. Very iconic. Popular for turning into gas dragsters in the 70s. You almost never see any these days - nor any of the other Kaiser models for that matter. They were notoriously unreliable, to the point of being featured in jokes of the period. 1959 Ford Galaxy 500 “Skyliner” First convertible hardtop with auto-retract. Insanely difficult to keep working correctly. Yeah, that sucker lifts off and auto-stows in the trunk. Meaning you can’t actually keep anything in the trunk. 1947 Studebaker M5 Coupe Express Pick-up Truck You’ve heard about Studebakers, right? Probably had no idea they made pickups. They did is the same way that Ford did - in that period: took a car, whacked the back off, and bolted on a pickup bed. (Ford’s F-series trucks on truck chassis debuted the year after this, in case you’re wondering) Now let’s just get weird for a bit here …. Meet the 1957 BMW Isetta. Two pictures: closed door, and open door: Cool, huh? Two-seater (three if you’re very good friends), and yes, that’s three wheels. It’s powered by one of the BMW motorcycle engines and drivelines. And yes, it’s as tiny as it looks like it would be. Since we’ve had a couple of concept cars and custom cars, I’ll also toss out one of my favorites from “Big Daddy” ,Ed Roth,: the Beatnik Bandit It was built as a project for ,Rod & Custom Magazine,. In addition to the plexiglass bubble dome, it’s controlled by a joy-stick, not a steering wheel. And yeah, that’s a blown Olds 303 up front. The full size version was a one-off, but Mattel sold a bajillion of it as part of the inaugural ,1968 Hot Wheels, lineup.
Particularly during the 1950–1970 period, American automakers would cascade individual trim series names downward. This had the effect of keeping the base model image fresh; for example, in 1957 the top trim for Chevrolet was Belle Aire. When Impala trim was introduced it became the top trim and Belle Aire, with its higher-end image, became the middle trim. Ford did the same thing with Galaxie, which originally was a top trim in 1959 but descended to a middle trim, replaced by Galaxie 500. This trim was later eclipsed by the Galaxie 500 LTD, and later still stood on its own as LTD. Earlier, the middle trim on Fords was labeled Customline. Shortened to Custom, it descended to be the base trim, styled either as Custom or Custom 500. See other answers for more detail and perspective.
of those two, I would choose the 351. The 302 in the Galaxie 500 was underpowered. The small V-8 was fine for the Mustang. Today things are different with the addition of Turbo’s… even a 4 cylinder has 300 hp.
The Galaxy with the 428 Police Pursuit. Mom had a 67 Galaxy with the high performance 390 that was a rocket. I hurt quite a few “super car” owners’ feelings with that one. I also took my road test in it. I’d go with a Charger if it was a 68.
