ford iveco daily Q&A Review

Which of the transporter cars like Iveco Daily, Mercedes Sprinter, and Ford Transit have second-row seat mounting points prepared in the factory?

Both the sprinter and the transit are made in passenger configurations so they have second third and forth row seats. No idea on the iveco... they don't sell them in the US.

What is the difference between a van and a sprinter?

a Sprinter IS a van, in the context of the question. its certainly no better than its cometitors! from a UK perspective it rusts away as fast as any other van, gets broken into just as much (especially if they are used for trades and are likely to have tools inside, which is rare because of their price makes them too expensive for trades). its not the most comfortable, in my experience, nor does it beat the competition on handling BUT its available in more sizes and weight carrying capacities (subject to local licenses etc being held) than every other similar van i can think of (except possibly the Iveco Daily which is probably the WORST van ive ever had the misfortune to use). the Mercedes sprinter is the Second best selling van in the UK. it is outsold by the Ford Transit by 3:1. yes people say transits arent the best but they will seem bad when there are 3 times as many being sold!

What car brands have the worst drivers?

Not brand, but car type. People that drive white delivery vans are the worst driver. Thay could be a Mercedes Sprinter, or a Hyundai Iload, a Iveco Daily, Ford Transit, Renault Master, or any other type of white van. All that drive one go way over the speed limit, drive aggressively, don't indicate, tailgate, and generally think they're the king of the road.

What is special about Toyota cars? Are Toyota cars still reliable?

nothing is special. in the UK toyotas are no more or less reliable than anything else. they sell fewer, are often more basic in equipment (which may help the lack of issues but NOT reliability in its true meaning) but as far as breakdowns go, the only reason you see or hear of fewer is because there are so many fewer Toyotas on the road. its like in the UK people say the Ford Transit van is unreliable and rusts but compared to the competition they rust no worse than, say, the Mercedes Sprinter and are MUCH more reliable than the Fiat Ducato/Iveco Daily. the Sprinter is also the second best selling van in the UK. it is outsold at something like 3:1 by the number 1 Ford Transit, but you dont hear of 3 times more issues with the Transit, its less, so are they REALLY that bad? same goes for toyota. ask 100 people about their car (100 RANDOM people) and Toyota might have a 100% perfect record, but you might only speak to 1 owner. also if you EXPECT less from a car (lower spec etc) then you are less likely to complain about niggles!

How many seats are in a cargo van?

From 1 to 11. The difference between cargo van and passenger van is in the “windows”, cargo have it solid metal, passenger have it transparent - the rest is same. It saves money to have just one structure with just two options - cut or don’t cut the holes. Result is the cargo vans are having the mounting positions for seats. 1 - all the seats are removed except for the driver’s, obviously. 2,3 - Standard option for seats in the first row. Small vans (VW Transporter) are having two seats, Ford Transit, Iveco Daily are having three seats because they are wider Others - The seats are mounted in the cargo bay using the factory ports designed for the passenger variants. For example, VW Transporter T4 / VW Caravelle T4 can have 2-seat layout, 2+2 layout (second row both forward or opposite direction), 2+3 (two options for the second row), 2+2+3, 2+3+3, 2+0+3. Just because they share the base.

Why don't you own any American manufactured cars?

I am probably one of the few here in Germany, who is constantly considering American cars. For quite a while I was driving company cars and basically all I could choose was the color and interior options. Which brand and model was given by the company, because they had some kind of “fleet contract” with Audi / VW / Skoda. Once I was free to buy my own car again, I was considering getting a used (3 year old) Dodge Caliber. Reason: It came with a VW diesel here and expense wise, by that time, for me anything with a gas engine made no sense. Diesel is the cheaper fuel here, the diesel engines have a better economy and if you do more than 20k mls a year, a gas engine is a financial disaster. But no dealers around ( I am not going to drive 100 mls for routine service) and very few used models to choose from. So I got a 5 year old 325d BMW instead, which I have now traded in for an Opel Combo and a Hyundai i20 coupe. The BMW made me drive at 150 mph all the time (which I tought is not the way I want to die - so I decided to focus my “driving pleasures” back to the race track and bought two Chevy V8 engines with turbos). Hence the Hyundai - dirt cheap, loaded with options, 5 year guarantee with unlimited miles and a dealer next town. There is NOTHING coming out of US factories that get’s even close (too small). And European Opels or Fords? The Fiesta feels like a mouse trap (besides knowing people working in the supplier industry for Ford and them telling me Ford always wants “the cheapest option” and Opel is out of the question after some rather poor experiences in my family (imploded tank on one, 2 rusted to death after less than 10 years). Since I can’t get my Chevy V8s moved with it, I still got an Opel Combo though, because it was way cheaper than a comparable VW and I just used it “around town”. Then currently I am looking for something to haul my race tractor with. I would LOVE a F250 Ford for that job. But they don’t sell them here. “Grey imports” are the only choice and they are stupidly expensive. I have friends who drive US Pick Ups here and my US friends are always surprised in what a nice condition they are in for their age - no surprise: They are collector’s items. Parts are a pain in the ass to get. I needed ONE piston ring for one of my Chevy engines lately. The cheapest I could find here were 130 US$ for a set. US Ebay - 48 $ for the same set. So bought those instead. But it took 12 days until I had them. That’s not an option for a daily driver. The other thing is they are really BAD on fuel. I am currently looking into a Iveco Daily (instead of a Ford F250) which is kind of a heavy duty van. Just spoke to a friend of mine today who has one, hauls his 7700 lbs race tractor with it and said he get’s 18 mpg with that thing fully loaded with the cruise control set at 63 mph. Turbocharged 3 Liter 4 banger with 210 hp. And I do believe that, as I hauled my tractor (less engines - so 2000 lbs lighter) with a 2 Liter VW Tiguan lately and got 27mpg. To sum it up: They are not competitive on the EU market. Ford and Opel run in segments head to head against the Japanese and the Koreans (who are building good cars lately), where they are just not an option when compared “in value for the money”. Same goes for VW in my opinion. The “non EU” models lack modern diesel engines as options ( I am not going to run one of those Cummins engines, I already worked on 25 years ago - in tractors). I read somewhere Fiat / Chrysler is going to put the Iveco Diesel into the Ram trucks now. But they don’t seem to sell them here yet and the price range I am looking into, means I need to buy used.

What do you think is the best van for converting, Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, or Dodge Promaster (Fiat Ducato/Citroën Jumper/Peugeot Boxer)? And why?

Ford Transit. simple fact is its cheaper than the mercedes, and equal or better in reliability (certainly in my experience in the UK), it drives better than ANY equivalent van of its size, spares are cheaper and plentiful in fact i can think of NO reason why you would buy ANY other van! even our work vehicles (Iveco Dailys basically a RWD Fiat Ducato) are going to be replaced by them!

What is the best electric van at the moment?

On market there are several automakers such as: Renault Kangoo ZE 33 - Small van Nissan e-NV200 40kWh - Small van Citroen Berlingo Electric - Small van Peugeot Partner Electric - Small van VW e-Caddy (on sale mid-2019) - Small van Mercedes eVito (on sale 2019/2020) - Medium van VW e-Transporter (on sale early 2020) - Medium van LDV EV30 (on sale early 2020) - Medium van Vauxhall Vivaro electric (on sale 2020) - Medium van Renault Master ZE - Large van LDV EV80 - Large van Mercedes eSprinter (on sale 2020) - Large van Volkswagen e-Crafter (on sale 2021) - Large van MAN eTGE (on sale 2021) - Large van Ford Transit electric (on sale 2021) - Large van Iveco Daily Electric - Large van Citroen Relay Electric (on sale TBC) - Large van Peugeot Boxer Electric (on sale TBC) - Large van Fiat Ducato Electric (on sale 2020) - Large van AVEVAI IONA-V (on sale 2020) - Large van ARRIVAL Van (on sale TBC) - Large van Chanje Van - Large van SEA Van - Large van StreetScooter Work XL - Large van And many others who change the drivetrain into electric one and sell on the market.

Why did Amazon choose to use Mercedes Benz sprinters as their delivery vehicles?

Did they now? In the UK they use various courier companies who happen to mostly use Mercedes Sprinters as very nice reliable vans. It's like the industry standard delivery van now in my country. Around London you used to see mostly Ford Transit vans and Iveco Daily vans. Presumably these are harder to get hold of. Then there was a trend for Citroen Berlingo vans which are crap. Now, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, ten years old, will still be reliable, have a good load capacity, and give you reasonable fuel economy. So why not? Another decade and Amazon will mostly be using drones.
