Ford Falcon FG XR6 LPG powered ute. Six cylinder in line 4.0 litre coupled to the four speed auto transmission from the BA&BF Series Falcon. The most annoying problem was the cashier at fuel outlets asking how much petrol I had as well. Dedicated gas. No petrol. Hardly ever believed me. The dedicated LPG engine is fitted with the hardened pistons from the Turbo XR6.
In Australia when I was younger, the 2 biggest selling models were the (GM) Holden Kingswood, and the Ford Falcon. Combined, their sales were more than 55% of the total vehicle sales in Australia. Both were full-size family sedans, rear wheel drive, with big inline 6s and V8s. Both platforms spawned station wagons, coupes, long-wheelbase luxury sedans, and commercial vehicles - the coupe-ute, panel-van, and in Holden’s case, the cab-chassis “one tonner.” In 1978 Holden launched the Commodore, that would go on to replace the Kingswood. It too, became a popular seller, sitting at #1 for many months at a time, even in the late 1990s. Both Falcon and Commodore still dominated the market as late as 1996, with close to 1/3 of total sales in AU going to those 2 models. Then they introduced car-like SUVs, and decent 7-seat vans, which slowly but surely eroded into the large car market. Smaller cars had grown dramatically. A 1995 Mitsubishi Magna - a large sedan, was wider than a Holden Commodore at the time. A 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer - considered a small car in the past, was now bigger than that 1985 Magna in every critical dimension. A Corolla of the same era is wider than a Commodore of 20 years earlier. People could now buy smaller cars that were still big enough to seat 4 adults, and all of a sudden we find the Corolla and Mazda 3 battling it out for the # 1 passenger car spot, just 12 years after it was dominated by large sedans. Dual-cab utes also rapidly gained popularity - work vehicle by day, family car on weekends and after hours, and tax loopholes encouraged this. Larger SUVs and “softer” 4WDs were now taking over the market that large sedans & wagons once had. Ford saw this, and developed the Territory - a car like SUV, which was initially very popular, but sales slowed by 2012. Large sedans & wagons were also often bought to tow loads like caravans, horse floats, boats, and even just the common box-trailer owned by many households in the suburbs. Thanks to marketing, people took on this view that you had to own a 4WD, SUV or dual-cab ute to tow anything. The best tow vehicle I’ve ever had (in 30 years of towing loaded car trailers) is the FG series Falcon (2008–2016), and my in-laws have a Holden Caprice that also tows with ease. We arrive at our destination after driving all day, and we’re ready to unload & enjoy ourselves. Others driving utes and truck-like 4WDs complain about aches & pains, and discomfort. I even had one guy tell me I needed an old Toyota Land-Cruiser like his to tow what I was towing, and my “little” Falcon was too gutless. On the way home from that rally I sailed past him, uphill, at 100km/h, whilst he struggled to do 80km/h with plumes of black diesel smoke covering the car he was towing. School carparks in the early 80s were full of Kingswoods, Falcons, and a few Commodores. Many children from my era grew up iin the back of a Kingswood or Falcon, and most have fond memories of road trips away. We also despise the vinyl seats and non-retractable seat belts - the buckles sitting in the hot summer sun would act like a branding iron when you sat in the car. And whoever thought black vinyl was a good colour for the Aussie sun? But we loved them, and they were everywhere. Motor racing was all about Aussie cars. Sure, we had Mazdas, BMWs, and even a Camaro racing, but school kids followed Ford or Holden. Ford lost a generation of fans when they dropped the V8 in 1982, but gained some back in ‘91/92 when they brought it back. School kids were Ford or Holden biased - usually because of what their Dad drove. You couldn’t argue with a one-eyed fan from either make. It spilled over into the local racing scene too, with the 1990s dominated by Ford vs Holden. I cop flack because I like both, and own a Ford as well as several Holdens - all locally produced models. But the writing had been on the wall for large sedans (and their offspring) for some time - the market began moving in the late 90s, and by 2006, the 2 large sedans had less than 1/4 market share combined, and it just kept falling. In the last year that both models were on the market, sales of all locally made Ford & Holden (large sedans + ute + Hoden wagon & Ford Territory SUV) were barely hitting 4% of the total market sales in Australia. So in a 40 year span, they went from 55% to 4%. The only large RWD sedans on the AU market now are the Kia Stinger and Chrysler 300. They sell in miniscule numbers.
