ford sn95 Q&A Review

Why didn't the DeTomaso Pantera challenge Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and other manufacturers of high-end performance sportscars?

Every single one of those companies has been an utter financial sinkhole at some point or another - usually many, many times, careening from near-catastrophe to near-catastrophe. If not for Enzo Ferrari’s connection to the FIAT-controlling Agnelli family, resulting in heavy (and now total) FIAT ownership (well, Stellantis now. Yep, that means Ferrari is not only a sister company to FIAT, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, and Maserati, but Peugeot, Opel, Vauxhall, Citroen, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, and Jeep) after Enzo rejected Ford’s attempt to buy it in the early 1960s (Odds are solid that Enzo never had any intention of selling to Hank the Deuce and used Ford’s interest to goad the Agnellis into upping their bidding price for the inevitable FIAT purchase of the company). Also, Enzo made and sold road and customer racing cars begrudgingly, only because he needed money to run in Formula 1 and top-level sports and GT racing. Lamborghini subsidized Ferruccio’s ego-trip into sports cars with the existing tractor production. It was a car program born almost literally out of spite after Ferruccio had issues with a Ferrari he’d purchased and Enzo basically told him to pound sand when he complained about it. Lamborghini sold the company in 1972, and the company went into receivership in 1977, not really emerging until 1984 with a purchase by the Mimram brothers, who sold to Chrysler in 1987. Chrysler, in turn, sold to Malaysian interests in 1994, who sold to the VW Group (officially Audi AG) in 1998. Aston Martin’s bread-and-butter in the post-war era was GT cars and Saloons, and even then, everything was done on a shoestring. Basically, they tried to compete with Jaguar, but without the British Government investment that Jaguar had. They do have a solid history and pedigree, but haven’t had a truly unique engine of their own since the Marek V8 went out of production in 2000 - the DB7 and up used engines derived from other existing designs (Jag I6, a V12 that’s basically 2 Ford Duratec V6s stuck together, Jag AJ V8-derived V8s, and lately Mercedes-AMG V8s). DeTomaso never really had a chance. By using an American engine, the Mangusta and Pantera were never going to be more than “mutts” to the thoroughbred European sports-car customers (see also: Bizzarrini and ISO), and lacking a top-level racing pedigree (admittedly, Lamborghini had the same issue, not really having a racing program until under VW Group ownership in the 2000s), they were never going to make the big-time. Epic build-quality and electrical issues also plagued the cars - it’s safe to say that a Pantera that’s been thoroughly (over) restored and upgraded with aftermarket components from a surprisingly-robust network of suppliers such as Hall Pantera is both a more reliable and more desirable car than a well-preserved “survivor” still running the original electrics and cooling system inside a body that’s been surfaced with huge amounts of lead in lieu of proper metalworking prior to finishing. Meanwhile, de Tomaso, the man, went on to acquire Maserati out of receivership, forge a deal with his old pal Lee Iacocca to make the utterly silly Chrysler’s TC by Maserati, and make a new Mangusta based on the central section of a Ford SN95 (aka Fox 4) Mustang tub and the Mustang Cobra’s 4.6L 4V engine before bailing on that project and selling the rights to Kjell Qvale. The Pantera somehow managed to stay in something resembling production until 1992.

How long can a Ford Mustang last if it’s driven all year round?

20 to 30 years or even more if even basically maintained. as shown by the sn95 and up mustangs which are still around and plentiful. as well as a decent number of foxbodys My 96 GT is and always has been a daily driver before me. It looks beat up on the outside, the paint is fading and there are some scratches, dents, and hail damage. But it still goes and goes fast. Thanks to some tasteful modifications by the previous owner.

Which cars after the 90s are designed with muscle car proportions? The closest one I found is a BMW Z4, and I'm looking for something under $6K.

The parameters you’ve outlined (muscle car, post-’90s, under $6K) pretty much narrow it down to one car: the Ford Mustang. Ford has made the Mustang continuously, in one form or another, since 1964, so any Mustang made since the ’90s should fit the bill. For $6K, you’ll be looking at either a fourth-generation (SN95) or fifth-generation (S197) Mustang - either this (1999–2004): Or this (2005–2009): Most of the Mustangs you’ll find under $6,000 will be the SN95. There are two versions - the original ‘94-’98 version, which is usually just called SN95, and the facelifted ‘99-’04 version, which is referred to as the New Edge. Most of the car is the same - only the exterior styling changed. They’re nice enough if you get one in decent shape, and you can get a pretty nice V6 model for $6,000. If you’re lucky, you might be able to snag a half decent V8 SN95, or a V6 version of the later S197 generation. I wouldn’t count on finding a decent V8 S197 for under six grand, though.

What should you never say to a Ford owner?

“Man that Ford would be so much better and faster if you would just LS swap it.” Now to shed a little light on that an “LS swap” involves removing the Ford engine and putting an GM LS series V8 engine in its place. To be sure the LS is a great engine and its cheap with huge aftermarket support plus it offers some size advantages plus its easy to work on owing to its older pushrod valve actuated design. This makes it a popular swap into the 1979–1993 Fox body Mustang as well as the later 1994–2004 SN95/New Edge Mustangs. However to a dyed in the wool Ford fan you have committed heresy!

What is a new Edge Mustang?

A New Edge Mustang is a 1999 to 2004 SN95 mid cycle refresh that was brought about under J Mays (Global Design Chief) tenure at Ford. The update dispensed with the softer rounder styling introduced with the 1994 SN95 Mustang in favor of more taught lines. Ford also took advantage of the refresh to offer mechanical improvements to the chassis and engine as well as allow the car to receive the IRS slated for the SVT Cobras. Generally the New Edge cars are considered more desirable compared to the older SN95 Mustangs especially certain models like the Bullitt, 2000 Cobra R, Mach 1 and 2003/2004 supercharged Cobras . Occasionally you’ll see the updated car referred to as SN95/New Edge since the car wasn’t a complete revision over the existing car but again featured numerous mechanical and styling tweaks.

What is the brutal truth about owning a Ford Mustang?

The brutal truth? Expect judgement from everyone you meet, regardless of whether they are interested in cars or not. Years ago, I took a job out in Dubai and the first item on my shopping list was a car. I’ve always been a petrol head and I realised that this was likely to be my one and only opportunity to justify owning something with an engine capacity greater than a large soda. So I bought a Mustang. I had always wanted one and prices of the older shape model (this was around about 2007) seemed reasonable. I found one being sold privately by a local, which made transferring ownership and insuring it a straightforward process (by UAE standards). My new ride was a 3.8 V6 and looked beautiful in deep metallic red with a lovely set of aftermarket 18”s on it. OK, it wasn’t the V8, but given my whips back home included a Marina 1.3 and a Fiesta 950cc, how slow could it be? Actually, it was pretty slow. The slush gearbox with overdrive was of a design that I thought had been left in the 1970s and changed up far too quickly if you left it in ‘D’ and even with an overdrive it revved pretty high at highway speeds. The handling was a curious mix of understeer and oversteer at the same time which coupled with the constant creak and buzz of the interior plastics made the whole experience a bit more Marina-esque than most Mustang owners would probably admit… No-one ever ordered a Mustang for granite-like build quality, so I kind of expected all of the above, but what I didn’t expect were the reactions from everybody. Everyone who thought they knew about cars (and I mean everyone, even those that drove leased Nissan Tiidas*) questioned my sanity, and indeed my virility, for not buying a V8. I’d find myself justifying falling short by two cylinders to practically everyone I met, colleagues, business contacts and interviewees, petrol pump attendants, nurse maids and children’s nannies… you name it, they all had an opinion on the shortcomings of the Essex (Canadian) V6 and of the lower-spec SN95 model Mustang in general. Almost as bad were the people who ordinarily didn’t care about cars. There was something about arriving in a long, metallic red sports car with blacked out windows and a slightly throaty exhaust that really brought out the spittle-flecked anti car campaigner in folk. I always found that odd as after all, these were the same people who at some point had made the decision to move to a petro-state. I once casually mentioned to a friend that I was planning to fit a de-cat pipe (petrol in Arabia at that time was leaded, so the catalyst was useless anyway) and she regarded me as if I had just sucker punched an endangered Oryx. One point where I slightly disagree with the other answers on this subject is the cabin size. Whenever I picked up the keys to go anywhere, there'd be at least two people following me for a lift, so the back seat can’t have been all that bad. Commuting to work was almost always four up (and for the first ten minutes in summer, five up as I gave my then girlfriend a lift to her office as well). Oh, I also installed an aftermarket sound system and would agree that the stock unit simply wasn’t fit for purpose. So to sum up, if you buy a Mustang, expect everyone to turn into either Jay Leno or George Monbiot. I suspect which ever configuration you chose, you’ll get criticised for it, conversely by the same people who’ll keep turning up and expecting you to drive them around. *,The ‘04-’12 Tiida sedan was a weirdly shaped car, peculiar to the Middle East. If you can’t be bothered to look it up, imagine if a Civic had a lovechild with a handbag, and this curvy abomination was the result.

Is a used 2000 Ford Mustang with 158K miles for $1500 reliable and worth it?

Service records? Was the car maintained? Are common SN95 issues taken care of? Clean title? Has it been in a wreck? If you’re going to buy it, at least have a competent mechanic check it out first. If the seller refuses, then you’ve just saved yourself $1500. Also, as a personal aside, ,never buy a v6 mustang,. Do yourself a favor and just get the v8. Smiles per gallon>miles per gallon.

What's better, Mustang or Camaro?

Neither car is inherently better than the other. That said, there are cases where one will have an advantage. Personally, I have a preference for Mustangs. I like the name and legacy associated with the car, Ford’s build quality seems to be better than GM’s these days, and the new Mustang has better visibility than the Camaro. That said, they are both beautiful cars, whether new or classic model years (although they’ve had their ups and downs - I think the ’80s third-gen Camaro looks better than the Fox-body Mustang, while the SN95 Mustang looks far better than the fourth-gen “catfish” Camaro). They’re both fast, they both handle well and, if I wanted a muscle car, I’d be happy with… You know what, screw it. Mustangs are better.

Why was the body style of the Ford Mustang so dramatically changed from 1979 until 2005 when the original body style returned?

the 70s really threw a monkey wrench into the muscle car era. In the later 70s, the mustang switched from its regular platform into the ford pinto platform and they also fitted them with a rather "neutered" V8 engine. Better days were soon to come and from 1979 to 1993 we had the generation known today as the "fox body" which is arguably one of the best generation Mustangs out there voted by the enthusiasts. 1994 came around and the SN95 body style came out. It was a little bigger, curvier, and sort of represented a slight "retro" look but was also pieced together like any other 90s car, especially in the interior. Ford smartened up and they started changing their platforms every 10 years. 2005 came around and so did the NEW bodystyle, then again in 2015. There is a muscle car for every generation.

Which model year Mustang looks the best in your opinion?

It really depends… I’ve owned every generation Mustang since the foxbody and I have a favorite in each of those four generations of car (foxbody - SN95/New Edge - S-197 - S550) but I also have a fondness for the Mustang II and the earlier cars so its hard to pin down which particular looks the “best” However if you were going to pin me down I’d say the 1969–1970 Sports Roof (fastback) cars were the most handsome. They combined muscular yet athletic good looks in a profile that screamed speed and in particular the 1970 Mach 1 with the shaker hood scoop. Just a really beautiful automobile. That said let me go down by generation for my favorites. For the S550 car (2015 to current) my favorite is the GT350 For the S-197 cars its the early GT500 For the SN95/New Edge cars (and this is a tough one since they had some cool cars) I’d have to go with the 2000 Cobra R For the fox cars it is the Cobra For the II its again the Cobra For the 71–73 cars again the Mach 1 You already have my answer for the 69–70 cars so onto the 67–68 cars which to me where the definitive muscle car Mustangs if one were to ask which Mustang was less Mustang and more Muscle car and while I like the Shelby’s of the era just the simple good looks of the fastback GT And for the 64.5 to 66 cars I’d have to say the 1966 Shelby GT350 mostly due to the rear quarter window detail which in my eyes really set the car off and was one of my favorite features on the S-197 cars (sometimes referred to as the “dorito”)
