xm ford falcon Q&A Review

What is your favorite car and why?

I have an awful lot of favorite cars but my main passion is Australian made Ford Falcons which stopped production last year. I love them all but I will post a picture of my favorite from each generation. 1st gen XM model Coupe 2nd gen XR GT First Australian muscle car and first V8 manual 289ci Ford Windsor V8 , demolished every one at the 67 Bathurst 500 and started the Australian muscle car era 3rd gen XB GT This was the generation started with the XA when it was all Australian designed as the US had ceased it in the second gen. In my opinion the sexiest Australian car ever made. 4th gen Now these look like box’s on wheels but are definitely the best era for me as they where 80’s babies like me (except the very start was 79 in the XD), this generation is when Fords took number one spot on the Australian market. Also the cars my favorite race driver got his first success’s in Richard “Dick” Johnson. The one I’m sharing is an one of Dicks race cars. Much like the US NASCAR but Aussie’s can turn left and right lol. The 5th gen I will break up into 2 because of the major styling changed half way through the nineties. First one is the 25th anniversary of the GT Falcon, the EB model one of my top favs. It also help mark the return of the V8 to Falcons after about 8 long years. The second one which came out when I was 14 or 15 so I lusted over it as a teenage boy and still do, the EL XR8, this is hotted up a bit but perfectly in my eyes. 6th gen This again I will break up into two because the first version the AU was such a change in styling for Ford Australian and is officially the car that handed the market leadership back to the GM subsidiary Holden. It was one of Australia’s best made Falcons after the teething issues of the first one and also the most produced model Falcon in Australia and has one hell of a rabid following myself included. I will post the best version ever, the 3rd version of Ford performance partner Tickford’s top end model, series 3 TE50 and TS50, E for excitement and the S for Luxury, the E came with a manual and I think cloth seats as standard but Leather optional, The S came auto only with Fords at the time sweet 4 speed electronic auto with adaptive shift. I pick the E because I love driving manual’s. The second one of this generation was very conservative on Ford’s behalf compared to the AU but did get Ford respect on the street again when it came to performance for everyone, in previous models since the middle of the 4th gen only special models where really fast, started changing with my EL XR8 but didn’t match Holden with them using the LS series of motor’s. In the BA out came a homegrown turbo version of Ford Australia’s 4L straight six with twin OHC and four valves per cylinder “Barra” motor. A nightmare to LS Holden owners from 2002 till now. Ford had a new performance arm called FPV (Ford Special Vehicle’s) which made the XR6 Turbo into a Typhoon that even scared some super cars with basic mods and tune, but I’m a V8 man through and through and its also the first time Ford Aus started using the modular motor, we went with the 3 valve 5.4L from the F serie’s but put a set of 4 valve cobra heads for the XR8 and FPV version’s. I’m sharing the FPV GT 40th anniversary in BF form the final version of the gen. 7th gen The final generation, only had 2 models and shared a lot mechanically with the 6th gen, first half of the first model FG used the same V8 as the BA and BF but did change to a supercharged version of Ford’s new 5L modular from the mustang, in the US it’s called the Coyote and in Aus we call it the Miami. FG was also the last model for FPV and the last ever GT Falcon was also the most powerful ever. 351KW ( a nod to the old 351ci Windsor and Cleveland powered cars from late 60’s to mid 80’s) with an overboost feature, if all was good like air inlet temps and fuel quality would boost power over 400kw, instant sell out and was selling for more second hand then it did new. I’ll post a picture of that the GT-F and I will post a pic of the FG I want, the top end luxury in the normal Ford range the G6E Turbo with a lovely German 6 speed auto. The last and final Falcon the FGX had no FPV model but the XR8 was basically the standard FG GT in sheep clothing, for around $60 000 Aus it was a steal and sold out before they hit the showroom, selling for more again second hand then new. Thank you guys I hope you like this it was my first answer on Quora and a subject that I’m very passionate about.

Have you ever been approached by an undercover cop? Why?

One of the first things that struck me about Buenos Aires was Argentina's native version of the humble Ford Falcon. Back home we are all used to seeing a continually evolving family sedan gradually adopting the state-of-the-art technology as it migrates to the automotive industry. You know; fuel injection, electric windows, self-cancelling indicators, cutting-edge stuff like that. Only in Argentina, the clock stopped at 1966 with the venerable XM Falcon locked into a feedback loop on the production line - sort of like one of them new-fangled vinyl LPs stuck on a piece of fly shit. "I must get a shot of one of these for the guys back home. They'll never believe it!" thought self. Still in a twilight zone of semi-slumber on the bus in from the airport, I did a quick census of the omnipresent Falcon. The 'proper' ones still had all the fair dinkum chrome work, but clearly they lapsed into a laissez-faire era in the '70s and '80s when leftover TE and TF Cortina grilles, head- and tail-lights were clumsily grafted onto the classic bodywork. Urgh! I checked into my downtown tourist hotel, The Libertador, and tossed and turned for a few hours, as you do, before deciding to go for a walk instead of trying to synthesise sleep. (Yes, I know about Melatonin now, thank you!) The sun was only just up as I strolled, camera in hand, toward the famous Avenue 7th July, the widest street in the known universe, or some such thing. BA was only just starting to stir, when along came a stunning silver Falcon. Here's my chance. Quick as you like, out came the 80-200 zoom lens and I lined up the Ford as it cruised toward me. Snap! Exhibit A "Uh oh, he wasn't happy," I thought, as the driver spun his head around to hurl me a sizeable glare. But he kept going - or looked like he kept going. A minute or two later, I stopped to observe some inconsequential street activity when…. URROOORRUP… this same Falcon came to an abrupt stop right in front of me. He'd done a deft lap of the block and, like a cruise missile, landed literally on my doorstep. "Oh, shit!" Where do I run? Nowhere. What do I do? Stay visible, stay cool. This could get ugly, I thought as two goons, looking like overweight, overage Starsky and Hutch types purposefully exited the well-used Falcon and fronted me. And I mean FRONTED me. The scruffy one in a tatty jacket with Brady Bunch grey/blonde hair came forward, fixed me a steely look and posed me something in Spanish to which I just shrugged my shoulders and said in my best "tourist" English, "Sorry I don't speak Spanish. Ha har.." Gulp! My mind was racing. Who were these guys? Hoods? Hitmen? Gangsters? or just middle-aged louts? The dark-haired one in the [recycled] denim jacket stood back, arms crossed to disguise his concealed hardware (I was sure) observing the unfolding scene. I could imagine the Partridge Family cast-off, now just a few inches in front of me, clicking his fingers and, like in a scene from The Persuaders, Tony Curtis casually pulls out a Browning and wastes me on-the-spot. In contrast, despite my serious transgression, these guys stayed reasonably cool, and while maintaining a decidedly ominous demeanour, didn't appear prone to any unprovoked violence. Starsky repeated his request, icy tone maintained, but this time in passable English. "You take my picture," he pronounced, gaze unflinching, "what for?" "Yes (ha ha). I'm a tourist from Australia and this is a Ford Falcon," I said in stilted voice, pointing to their modest transport whilst still managing a convincingly idiotic smile. "Yes, Ford Falcon," Starsky acknowledged, wondering I'm sure, just where the hell this was going. "We have Ford Falcon too, but this one we stop making in 1966 (ha ha). I take a picture to show my friends at home (ha ha)." My nervous grin bravely maintained. This seemed to lighten them up a bit. Starsky turned to his mate and gave him a fleeting, but universal look that said plainly, "We've got a right one here!" Did I see the corner of his mouth curl into the hint of a smile? Stoneface reapplied, Starsky turned to me again. Slowly but purposefully, he reached inside the corrugated lapel of his jacket and produced ….a badge!? My inquisitor clearly expected a very different reaction as I expelled a relieved gust of air. Phew! These guys are coppers, the good guys right? This revelation came as an enormous relief. At least they weren't cranky hired guns looking to kill some time, or me! By this time Tony Curtis was having a quiet chuckle to himself in the background and Starsky, almost chummy by now, put me through another series of short questions just for good measure; where was I staying? how long? Etc. I even proudly shared with them my Aussie drivers' licence which chuffed them both no end. "You have a nice trip. Bye bye" And with big gaucho grins, they both shook my hand enthusiastically and scooted off into the slowly developing traffic. That was the damnedest thing, I thought. Wait till I tell someone this story! And it wasn't long before I got the chance. After breakfast on the city tour bus, I recounted my little encounter with our ebullient tour guide. When I got to the bit about the badge, his face froze, just after his mouth fell open. "Oh shit!" he gasped, eyes widening, "The Secret Police!" Then, drawing air noisily between clenched teeth, he added; "You are very lucky….they make you disappear!"

Is Tesla a good investment?

If you had asked me last October, I would have told you “Sure, if you have money to burn.” Then I bought a 2016 Tesla Model X 90D in November for $75,000 because it made business sense for my limousine company, Utah Private Car. I took delivery in Orlando on December 10th, 2019 and drove it back to Utah and put it into service in early 2020. Now I’m honestly trying to figure out how I can make enough money so I never have to buy an old-fashioned car again. This Model X has been the most enjoyable car to drive I’ve ever had. It beats out every other car, SUV, or van I’ve ever owned - including a Cadillac Escalade (Platinum), 3 Acura, 2 Lexus, a Prius, a BMW, an Audi, 3 Honda, 2 Nissan, a Datsun, 3 Ford, a Chrysler, a Volkswagon, a Subaru, a Toyota Celica, and a Hyundai. And it’s not even close. Driving without a transmission, with insane responsiveness and acceleration, silky smooth handling, a really low-road noise against premium sound, all for pennies on the mile, is just the kind of experience you want to repeat. Again and again. What’s more, the costs of ownership make it feel like a steal, even though the monthly payment on the car is almost as much as my mortgage (although I have to point out that I live in Utah, so my my mortgage isn’t all that high). Maintenance is really low, repairs for 50,000 miles are included in the purchase price, and if you have Free Unlimited Supercharging like I do, the cost per mile is reduced to something like 2 to 4 cents per mile - mostly tires - with interest, depreciation, and insurance being the only major costs of ownership. And then there’s the fun I’ve had showing it off to the grandkids, especially the Auto Summon, falcon-wing doors, Caraoke, auto-fart, and demo dance. The Tesla takes “fun car” to new levels. I’m sure this is 4-year old Kaylee’s favorite car in the whole wide world. Last time I was in Denver, she had her car seat out of the family van and into my Model X before her Dad could say word one. And I sure wouldn’t say anything. Kaylee’s adorable. Yes, I think anyone who wants to get a head start on the future of driving should buy a Tesla. Just don’t mortgage the house or trade in the grandkids. You’ll need the house/garage to charge the Tesla and the grandkids to let you know how smart you were to buy the Tesla. ======= Additional Notes: CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE YOU BUY ======== BUYING A USED TESLA., If you buy used, I’d recommend buying through Tesla’s web site. Some of the most valuable features, like Free Unlimited Supercharging, Full-Self Driving, and Premium Connectivity are essentially software enabled (or disabled) features and Tesla seems to reserve the right to cancel them upon transfer. They keep them when the resell the car themselves because that’s in their own best interest. I know it can be unnerving to buy such an expensive car sight-unseen, but looking back on the experience, it was worth the month-long stress I endured in finding and securing the vehicle I did. BENEFITS OF USING A REFERRAL CODE WHEN YOU BUY A NEW TESLA OR SOLAR EQUIPMENT ,Tesla has a referral program where every owner can refer others using their unique referral link, and both the referring owner and the referred buyer get benefits (such as credits on supercharging or other products or an entry in a drawing for a Tesla), so if you know someone with a Tesla and are considering buying one yourself, ask them for their referral link. If you want to use mine ( ,Earn Free Supercharging Miles or a $100 Cash Award, ), please feel free to do so - we’ll both benefit if you do. FEATURE CONSIDERATIONS TESLA MAY NOT TELL YOU ,There were a few things I didn’t know (and was not told) when I bought my 2016 Tesla Model X. You may want to research and compare the benefits of buying used vs. new. Consider: * Full-self driving is expensive on new cars but might be included in a used model you buy from Tesla. I’m glad I have it since it keeps getting better, but it’s definitely got a long ways to go before it’s ready for prime time and I’m not sure it’s worth the extra cost if you’re buying new. Right now it’s more novelty than useful. But it came with the car I bought, so Tesla upgraded my Autopilot CPU at no expense to me, and it can be helpful IF you’re driving a long distance and are willing to put up with irrational lane-changes and annoying need to keep your hands on the steering wheel and tweak it regularly in exchange for the car automatically exiting the freeway before turning the driving. I’ve yet to get the Summon feature or Auto-Park to work very well - and I’m a geek willing to try really, really hard and long to get something to work. - If buying used, be sure to check to see if your model has Caraoke and Netflix/Hulu under entertainment. If it doesn’t, that means you have the old Graphics processor and your graphics and internet performance will be <ahem> less than satisfactory. I bit the bullet and paid $1,500 for the upgrade, but lost AM/FM radio and Sirius XM in the process because I wasn’t willing to pay another $500. At the very least, ask Tesla specifically about the daughterboard recall and GPU status before buying a used Tesla. - Tesla has also repaired or replaced (under warranty) the charging unit, door handles, A/C, GPU daughterboard, and wipers. Because I love the car, I’m willing to forgive Tesla for all the time I’ve had to spend letting them fix their flaws in the original design of my December 2016 Model X - which is the only month I could have gotten both Full-Self Driving AND Unlimited Free Supercharging. - If your model has staggered tires, they can be really expensive, hard to find, and you only get half the warranty. Eventually, after checking with the Tesla Service Manager in Salt Lake, I bought a second set of 19″ wheels (black rims) with All-Season/All-Terrain tires, and save the original staggered 20″ silver wheels and snow tires for snow season here in Utah. That way, the 19″ tires will be under warranty for the full (60,000) miles and cost a lot less. - Expect some degradation over time in the range, but overall, Tesla’s batteries are state-of-the-art. Just try searching for anyone complaining about their battery giving up the ghost and you’ll see that Tesla’s probably not far off when they say their batteries are designed to last 500,000 miles. So don’t worry about the battery as much as you do other considerations. - Just expect long-distance travel in the Tesla to be more leisurely and take longer. That’s because the faster you go (to get there sooner) the more energy is used and the more time you spend charging, which means largely losing the time-benefit of speeding. Just relax and let the Tesla go the speed it wants to go (after setting the cruise-control speed to be 10% above the speed limit), and know that you’re going to get there pretty close to the time the navigation says you’re going to get there if you follow its charging recommendations faithfully. - Speaking of the navigation, it (inexplicably) cannot handle multiple destinations, i.e. stops on the way to your final destination. It will automatically add superchargers, but if you want to stop anywhere else, you’ll have to use A Better Route Planner to plan your trip in advance. I find this to be a baffling (and very annoying) limitation. Overall, in spite of its flaws and several annoyances, this is just a very well-engineered car that makes driving a pleasure again. Even on long distances. And it seems they just keep improving in all the ways it needs improvement, and a lot of the improvements get downloaded while the car is parked in my garage. So my answer to your question is “Yes, one should buy a Tesla as soon as you can afford one.”
