I have one, and I like it. I no longer go on long, multi-day trips by motorcycle, so I have not rigged it for carrying luggage. I have gone on day trips, and it does very well for that.
If you don’t stray too much away from the Tarmac then the versys 650 is perfect.. but a long test ride is recommended before you make up your choice.
I think your premise is wrong. CVT is ubiquitous on motor scooters, of all sizes, so there is no manual version to compare with. The only partial exception is the Honda NC 750 range, but their auto option is not CVT, but a car-type 6-speed auto with the addition of a dual-clutch transmission. They are more expensive than the manual option. CVT cars are not necessarily more expensive. CVT is an old and relatively simple technology first used, I believe, by DAF, who called it ‘variomatic’.
First of all, it depends on your drivers license. If you haven’t got one you may be required to acquire an A2 license, which limits you to 48 hp. Otherwise you are free to choose what you want. As you come from India, I assume that you are not as tall as many Germans, so I would suggest any beginners bike, for example a Honda NC 750 or a Yamaha MT-07. The KTM Duke 690 is a fine bike, but it has reliability issues. They are all purpose steet bikes without offroad capability and cost less than 8,000 Euro brand new. Compared to Indian standards, motorbikes in Germany are very strong and fast, which is okay, because most of our roads are far better than the roads in India. If you are not interested in a particularily fast bike but you look for a comfortable everyday cruiser, you may look for a Honda Deauville. It has cardanic drive, a very good wind protection and an integrated luggage system. Its production has been discontinued, but there are used bikes available for far less than 5,000 Euro.
My experience is limited to 4 bikes — a Zero S, Ninja 400, Honda NC 750 X, and a Z900 RS. I find the Zero to be the most comfortable. Not having to shift means I can focus on the ride, and being electric the ride is very smooth. My Z900 RS is a close second. Also pretty smooth. The NC 750 X I did not like; mostly because the stock seat is horrible, IMO. I would say the best additions for my Ninja 400 were the adjustable levers, bar-end mirrors, and tank grips. Also went with after-market grips and a slip-on exhaust but I almost considered going back stock on those two items. For my Zero I replaced all the bulbs with LED lights. Makes it so I can actually see at night. For the Honda I got an Airhawk seat pad (was around $100, vs $600 for a custom seat). Haven’t had to do anything to the Z900, but I may consider a quick shifter at some point. Still debating that. Out of all the additions to all the bikes I would say the bar end mirrors on the Ninja 400 was the best bang for the buck, though it took a while to get setup just right. The stock mirrors were blurry and had a limited field of view. I like to see what is coming up beside me.
There are some, mainly Honda. Its an inertia mostly. DCT is very capable on Honda VFR1200, CRF1000, NC 750, Integra, X-Adv. Those are touring and sport-touring bikes. People dont want automatic on bikes. But those who try - like it very much.
I have owned two Guzzis, a Breva 750 Breva 750 Norge 1200 I currently have a Honda NC 700, and have had, over the years, a Suzuki, a Kawasaki, and another Honda. All of them, both the Guzzis and the other bikes, had controls configured and located the same way.
Honda NC 750x DCT , automatic for the city, relaxed on highway , 3000 rpm at 60, almost 70mpg, storage compartment frunk, upright riding position.
Its not the size, its the torque. Cruisers with big engine isnt comparable to 600 sport bike in terms of how dangerous they are. Long gone are the days where every motorcycle company was in race who produced more horsepower. Its now other important things. Ergonomics. Quality. Longevity. Various electronic systems. Liter doesn't automatically means its a wild rocket. In my opinion. BMW 750GS is suitable enough bike for anyone. Yamaha R6 isnt. Yamaha Stratoliner 1900 is ok for first bike (if you into such bikes, 40+ and weigh close to 100), CBR1000RR isnt isnt isnt. And Ninja 250 would be laughable for you if you are 40+, weigh close to 100 and isnt into sport bikes at all. Honda everything-not sport 500–750 is good enough first bike. NC 750, CB500, Integra, all great first bikes. Notice the trend here? Stay away from wild sport bikes as your first bike. Thats good enough advice. Because you need to rev them to ride. They dont accelerate at lower revs and shoot at higher. Most of the non sport bikes have way more linear torque. Its safer, its more predictable. And it isnt tied to engine size.
Personally I would go for an intermediate size Maxi acooter; 300cc would do nicely. My bigwheel SYM Citycom 300i was outstanding for that kind of urban usage. It had a truly excellent CVT, way easier to use than my Suzuki Burgman 400. If it has to be a motorcycle; The dual clutch automatic Honda NC 750 would be hard to beat. The engine is very low and designed like half of a Honda Fit car engine; and the gas tank is under the seat giving the bike fantastic stability and ease of handling at low speeds. Clutch levers can literally be a pain on a big bike in gridlock and the Honda doesn’t need one. It can tick along smoothly , easily and effortlessly. The bike is also blessed with excellent low speed power adding to this effortless progress. A front trunk (frunk) adds to the convenience and is a bonus. The bike was specifically designed for Europe’s conditions and thus is exceptionally frugal with pricey fuel. If you are looking for a less expensive option the Honda 500X light Adventure bike would also be an excellent choice. It has an unusually low geared first gear which is handy in very slow moving traffic without needing constant clutch usage and if you do need it, the Honda’s slipper clutch is very very light and easy to use. It also is an unusually frugal bike.
