kai fa 50 Q&A Review

What can you say about the Philippines recent and future acquisition of fighter aircraft namely the KAI FA-50 Fighting Eagle from South Korea?

The FA-50 is not underpowered at all. In fact, it has a better thrust/weight ratio than the Gripen. They both use the same engine (F404, at 17,500 lbs thrust), while the FA-50’s maximum weight is about 10.000 lbs LESS than the Gripen. That means it can take off & land using less runway, can climb, turn, and accelerate much better. Like anything in aviation, there’s a downside: it doesn’t carry as much. Thats ok, as its mission is more limited. While some may dismiss it as merely a “trainer with weapons attached,” remember that its overall performance is very similar to the world-class F-16, from which it drew inspiration. Also, it’s much cheaper…about half the cost! If I were a general making purchase decisions, I would definitely lean in the direction of buying 20 Fighting Eagles (from a nearby supplier) rather than 10 Gripens with a supply chain 10,000 miles long.

The Irish government has made a tentative suggestion to acquire jet interceptors. In a 2 way choice between the Korean KAI FA-50 or the Swedish Saab Gripen, which would you recommend? Take cost to buy & operate into consideration.

Hi, thanks for asking. To begin, these are the best kind of comparison questions, not those mouth breathing “who would win” situations, albeit interesting to read. To begin, I will list the aircraft and some statistics, before we delve a little deeper. The Saab JAS-39 Gripen The JAS-39 Gripen is a Swedish Canard delta wing multirole fighter. Introduced in 1996, it features a fly-by-wire flight control system and relaxed stability, for increased maneuverability. introduced under strict Swedish fighter aircraft requirements, it is capable of a 450 meter takeoff on an incomplete runway or a highway, able to be serviced by conscripts in a shopping mall parking lot, and more. Top speed: 2,460 km/h, 1,530 mph, or Mach 2.0 Combat range: 500 mi, or 800 km Ferry range: 2,000 mi, 3,200 km Thrust/weight ratio (clean wings, 50% fuel): 0.97 Empty weight: 6,800 kg, or 14,991 lbs Maximum takeoff weight: 14,000 kg, or 30,865 lbs G rating: +9, -3 Armament: 1 27mm Mauser BK-27 Revolver cannon with 120 rounds Flyaway price (2021): roughly $50 million USD Cost per flight hour: $4,700 USD The, ,KAI FA-50 Fighting Eagle The FA-50 Fighting eagle is a South Korean/American variant of the T-50 Golden Eagle light trainer. Designated as a light attack aircraft, it began development in 1997 as a solution for Korea’s aging fighter fleet, and as a cheap and effective export aircraft for nations around the world. Top speed: 1.837.5 km/h, 1,141.8 mph, or Mach 1.5 Range (Combat & Ferry range unavailable): 1,150 mi, 1,851 km Thrust/weight ratio (Wings clean, 50% fuel): 0.96 Empty weight: 6,740 kg, or 14,264 lbs Maximum takeoff weight: 12,300 kg, or 27,117 lbs G rating: +8, -3 Armament: 1 20mm General Dynamics A-50 rotary cannon with 205 rounds Flyaway price (2012): $30–35 million USD (can’t find concrete information) Cost per flight hour: N/A I’m writing this answer in between flights so my writing style might be a tad different. To begin, I am going to just assume that the FA-50 costs $30 million, to remove some randomness from the answer. Furthermore, I haven’t been able to find any information on the cost per flight hour for the FA-50, or T-50. If anyone would like to comment information and finalize the answer, that would be great. For the price. Both of these aircraft are the best bang for their buck in the military aviation market, even outdoing some training aircraft in their economics. For reference, the F-16C has a cost per flight hour of $8,000 USD, which is halved by (probably) both of these aircraft. Now, in my personal opinion, I would choose the Gripen for a handful of reasons. The Gripen has a higher top speed than the FA-50, and a better sustained turn radius, especially in the vertical. The Gripen also has the same missiles and bombs available to the FA-50, with more local options. On top of this, it has a range of roughly 1,800 miles compared to the 1,150 miles of the FA-50. Lastly it appears to have superior avionics to the FA-50, but this may be due to a lack of information on it. The Gripen also carries Selex ES-05 Raven AESA radar, which is very capable and possibly superior to the FA-50’s radar, but I haven’t been able to find anything about it. In conclusion, the winner of the irish interceptor contract is: The JAS 39 Gripen! In conclusion I want to state that this is entirely my opinion, and if you have contradicting information and opinions, I urge you to add to the conversation in the comments, thanks! I hope this helps!

Which one of following Light Combat jets should you Choose as a defense expert. a) JL-9 (FTC-2000G) b) Tejas MK1 c) KAI FA -50 d) Leonardo M346 FA e) L-39 NG f) Thunder Block II?

KAI F-50. No contest. By far the most capable of the jets mentioned.

How does KAI's FA-50 compare to the Saab Gripen and the F-16 in terms of both capability and cost?

Not comparable at all. KAI TA/FA 50 is LIFT. Both Vipers and Gripens are multirole fighters.

Is the Indian LCA Tejas MK1 a better combat fighter than the Korean Kai FA-50?

Tejas MK 1 is better then Kai FA-50 because it can carry heavy weapons such as anti ship cruise missiles as well as hypersonic missiles. But only thing that makes it lesser is its over weight which destroys performance of US engine. As Tejas is rejected by Indian forces many times and Kai FA-50 is in service. On the other hand Tejas has USA components in it. India will have to obtain export license from USA in order to sell its Tejas. Moreover Tejas is far more expensive and is in range of Su-30. In this range Su-30 will be preferred over Tejas.
