How does the 'Snow' and 'Power' modes of the Nissan Elgrand E50 transmission work?
I can only speak for my E51 - but “Snow” mode pulls away in a lower gear and changes gear quickly to keep the revs low and avoid spinning out. It also makes the throttle less “twitchy” so you have to press the pedal further to accelerate and give you finer control. You have to really put your foot to the floor to get it to kick down. In other words it makes it easy to avoid doing the things that you shouldn’t do in snow - and it works. I didn’t wheel spin once through all the snow we had this year. In “Power” mode, similar parameters are adjusted but in the opposite direction. It changes gears much later (i.e holds the revs higher) and in general, its gear selection is different - optimised for speed. Occasionally, if I go to accelerate hard (foot to floor), the “Power” light will automatically switch on my dashboard - assumingly predicting that I need some temporary extra juice and then turns off once I come off. Power mode with heavy acceleration and my fuel economy will likely be 18–20mpg. Snow mode, taking it easy I might get 26mpg. Day to day I tend to just leave it with neither mode on, reserving them for when I want them and get a balanced 20–23mpg depending on urban/motorway. Because the Elgrand is an import, it’s hard to get some of the technical details - so if anyone has a more specific detail on what the ECU is doing, I’ll update - but subjectively this is correct.
