volvo bloemfontein Q&A Review

Why is depression so common in this day and age?

I am 74 now and the world has changed somewhat. What kind of world did my dad and I live in when he was in early thirties and me in my early teens. Dad went to work on a bicycle-our old 1956 Vauxhall was for Sunday Drives and holidays on virtually traffic free streets. NO TV, Telephone was a black thing that was fixed to the wall. My dad came home one day and proudly showed us this magic thing called a portable radio because the old valve radio was packing up. Daily news was the radio was in the morning and evening and we kids had to keep quiet for dad to tune in. Other than the only other communication with the outside world was our local newspaper. When I started work at 18 I started in the General Post Office Telegraph office where I was a morse operator connected to smaller town in the district or by telex machine. Move on to when dad was retired and in his late 60’s. I had since moved on from the PO to a newspaper industry and then advertising agency. I had a Volvo automatic (dad could not wrap his head around this automatic thing) and had since moved to Cape Town from Kimberley via Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth. My job also required flying around to various branch offices in the main cities. A flight from Cape Town to Kimberley took about 2 hours, 30 minutes. Long story short, my dad led a quiet, uncomplicated retirement and the only “modern” appliance they had in the house was a TV with limited channels. In his early 70s he landed in hospital after a stroke. Unable to speak he was still lucid and able to write short messages, and I had the opportunity to combine one of my business trips to from Cape Town to Johannesburg and back to CT via Kimberley to visit dad, A distance of about 2500 km (About 1600 miles) — all in one day. (By car easily a two day trip.) When I mentioned this to my dad you could see the disbelief and on a note pad drew one big question mark and exclamation mark. This was beyond his comprehension. A long story I know but my point is, as observed through my own life experiences, that technology has changed the world dramatically and continues exponentially causing us information overload and extreme stress. So personally, this is my answer to your question and I believe to be the cause of my depression and anxiety.

Have you ever been in an accident that could have lost your life?

The Day the music kept playing, yet I almost died. December the 27th 1996 We had taken a trip to my Uncles place in Bloemfontein. This is a city in South Africa. Quite a hot city, and very dry. I remember being relaved when we finally went home for there was a suprise Christmas gift waiting for me at home. I was 10 years old. The journey was in a 1993 Toyota Conquest. My mom was driving, and my older brother sat in front. I lay in the back playing with one of my toys trying to cure the boredom of the long drive. I was so excited to get home. The back seat did not have any seatbelts but I felt safe. My mom was the best driver in the world in my mind. About 2/3 of the way it was my time to pick the music. I chose Michael Jackson as in my youth I loved his music. Album was Dangerous on a caset tape. The music was playing when my mom looked back at me. She smiled at me and turned back. She didn’t realize she was heading straight for the car in front of her. My brother got a fright and screamed. My mom got an even bigger fright and before we knew it the car flew off the railing and over a cliff. Now whilst in the air, and lying down I did not realize the car was flying. But once it hit the ground nose first I realized this might be the end. It happened in slow motion. The car flew over a few informal settlement houses and hit nose first. The force flipped the car over and it rolled 5 and a half times. During this I was perfectaly aware of everything happening. I could hear crunshing metal and shattering glass. I could only feel roof, then floor, then roof again. Suddenly I felt the grass on my legs. It happened really slowly and I remember thinking of how my legs would itch after this was all over. It is funny how our brain works in moments like this. I finally fell out of the car and the car fell onto my legs. At this point I blacked out. I remember waking up and not being able to sit up. I heard my mom say to my brother in a panicked voice, “Where’s Mighael”. All I could mutter was a scream. When my mom climbed out of the car and walked around she shrieked. There was twisted metal all around me and she could not see if I was still alive. Suddenly we were surrounded. The people living in the settlment heard the commotion and started running to help. They lifted the twisted metal to reveal there was a perfect gap where my neck was. The metal was mearly pinning me down. After they lifted it I sat up…And saw my leg. It looks like it had been gutted like a fish. And all i could see was bone and blood. I started screaming but hardly any sound came out. My eyes and lips were nearly swollen shit and all I could taste was blood. My mom was histerical and my brother ran down the next embankment to the lower highway to try and stop someone. This is when a lady put my head on her lap and started singing to me while i was lying on the grass bleeding to death. The next thing remember I was in some person who had stopped’s Volvo. They had tied my jersey around my damaged leg and I had to be rushed to the nearest hospital as I was rapidly bleeding to death. I remember a young girl sitting in front. She had the most beautifull eyes. She took my hand and squeezed. “What ever you do keep talking to him” my mom said. “He needs to stay awake”. We arrived at the hospital 15 min later. The paramedics who rushed out immediately screamed at my mother for moving me. I remember while being transported into surgery I looked at my mom and asked her why. Why did she do this to me? I don’t know why I said this but it still haunts me to this day with guilt. After 3 and a half hours of surgery my leg was put back together. I have full function with it. I remember being scared of any car or bus for years after until I learned to drive myself. I also remember. That once the car had stopped rolling. My mom had to still put the engine off. The music was still playing. Michael Jackson’s Heal the world to be precise. I don’t know how I survived being flung out of the car like that, and having a gap where my neck was. If I had moved an inch to the right or left I would be dead. But here I am. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the car as it happened years ago. But it looked something like this:
