volvo technology Q&A Review

What happened on board the Volvo Ocean Race yacht, Vestas Wind, that with the best sailing technology 'out there' they were able to run aground on a charted shoal north east of Mauritius?

Although at this stage (Dec 1st 2014, a few days after the grounding) not all the information is available, Ian Walker (skipper of ADOR and the boat that is currently first overall and in this leg) gave an analysis with the limited knowledge. One thing he tells that the reef was on the maps, although it was difficult to see. For the rest of the info, see the facebook post: ,https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=838428976180501, (The facebook post is of November 30th) Edit Dec 5th: Update from the facebook page of the navigator on board of Team Vestas: ==== We finally have means of communications again, so a message is highly over due…. I am totally devastated and still in shock as the gravity of our grounding is slowly sinking in now that we are safely in Mauritius with finally some time to reflect on what happened. We are very lucky that nobody was hurt, and a lot of that is credit to our team work in the seconds, minutes and hours after the crash. I made a big mistake, but then we didn’t make any others even though there were many difficult decision to be made and the situation was very challenging and grave indeed. Once I can get power to the boats laptops (if they survived) I can look further into how we didn’t see the reef on the electronic charts. I did check the area on the electronic chart before putting my head down for a rest after a very long day negotiating the tropical storm and what I saw was depths of 42 and 80m indicated. There is a very good article posted on http://blog.geogarage.com/2014/12/questions-asked-about-volvo-ocean-race.html. I can assure you that before every leg we diligently look at our route before we leave and I use both Google Earth, paper charts and other tools. However, our planned route changed just before we left, and with the focus on the start and the tricky conditions, I erroneously thought I would have enough information with me to look at the changes in our route as we went along. I was wrong. I am not trying to make any excuses – just trying to offer up some form of explanation and answer to some of your questions. There are a number of lessons to be learned from this, which we hope will be able to relay in the time to come. I am immensely grateful for all the support that we as a team, my family and myself have received from our wonderful friends, colleagues, family, Vestas, Powerhouse and Volvo. More over we are heavily in debt to the thorough support of Alvimedica throughout the first night, as well as the local fisherman and the coastguard of Ile du Sud in the atol. So I want to thank everybody so very much. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am forever in your debt. ,Wouter, ====

Is Volvo leading the way in electric car technology?

No Volvo has a T8 Plugin Hybrid so far. They are coming out with a Polestar 2 all electric but it has not been released yet. I’ve read it’s being made by a company in China. So I can’t say that Volvo is leading the way in Electric car technology. If you follow or read about all electric you can see Tesla is leading the way for the world. They have the longest range vehicles on one charge. They make the most Electric vehicles. They are expanding super fast. They make the most batteries in partner with Panasonic in Sparks Nevada in the biggest factory of any kind. The factory is also powered by Solar PV with a wind farm going in right behind the factory. Their batteries last the longest (life on the car) and are the lowest in price of any in the world. They use the same battery cells in the Power Wall for homes and Power Packs for utilities and sell them by the Mega Watt all over the world. Now that is Leading the way.

What are the technologies only used by Volvo trucks?

Volvo has pretty good pages about their breakthrough innovations,., , , One of the newer differentiators is Volvo Dynamic Steer. An electronically controlled electric motor attached to the steering shaft is the unique innovation in Volvo Dynamic Steering. The electric motor works together with the hydraulic power steering to make light work of maneuvering the truck. The system makes the truck much lighter to steer at low speeds, irregularities in the road surface are effectively filtered out, and at high speed the truck benefits from better directional stability. The system also self-centers the steering wheel in all situations, even when reversing,.,

How does Volvo use the latest gaming technology to develop safe cars?

This technology helps Volvo engineers to simulate traffic scenarios on a real test track road while using a real car but being totally safe. The analysis and insights on the interaction between people and the car is crucial for development of new safety, driver assistance and autonomous driving features. The engineers using the simulators could be exposed to imaginary active safety and driver assistance features, upcoming autonomous drive user interfaces, future car models and various other scenarios that are fully customizable. This enables Volvo Cars to study authentic human reactions in a safe environment and at a fraction of the cost of a real test, says Casper Wickman, senior leader of User Experience at Volvo’s Open Innovation Arena. How does it work? The mixed-reality driving simulator's setup includes a moving driving seat, a steering wheel with haptic feedback and a crystal-clear virtual reality headset, something that a gaming enthusiast would be excited about. The simulator makes it hard to differentiate between reality and simulation. The simulator involves driving a real car on real roads, combining life-like, high definition 3D graphics, an augmented reality headset, and a full-body Teslasuit that provides feedback from a virtual world and monitors bodily reactions.

How is Tesla going to survive in 10 years when Volvo will have caught up with Tesla’s technology?

How is Tesla going to survive in 10 years when Volvo will have caught up with Tesla’s technology? If Tesla survives (which I think it will, but I’m no expert) then it will have been in the EV business for longer, it will have (as it does now) very deep supply chains along with massive (and to-date unmatched) battery production facilities. The Chinese company Geely (the owners of Volvo) are relatively new to the motor car business but are in exactly the right location to promote EV’s, since China is the largest market. I’m sure they can catch up, the question for me is how long will it take. In the much longer term (50 to 100 years), I don’t see many of today’s car manufacturers surviving. I also think passenger cars will become an endangered species, on their way to extinction. Which means probably Tesla AND Geely both won’t survive. Until then, Tesla has an advantage with the cost of inputs to their production processes and will have, for as long as it lasts, an advantage of owning the EV “territory,” learning lessons now that others will pay dearly to learn later. They also have, for now, the advantage of ditching the “dealer” model and selling direct. This didn’t cost Tesla anything because they had no pre-existing dealer network but Volvo (and other traditional car makers) may struggle to ditch dealers, who are significant stakeholders in the traditional car market.
