volvo fh truck Q&A Review

In terms of height between this train and this truck (photo in details), who is taller: the train or the truck?

The tractor unit on the truck is a Volvo FH Globetrotter XL, which has a height at it's maximum point of 3950 mm (as found here: ,Page on volvotrucks.com,). The max height of the trailer on the truck is 4.0m (,Page on internationaltransportforum.org,), assuming it's driving in continental Europe and not in Scandinavia based on the Swiss flags on the windscreen. As Ben said, the CFR 40 comes in at 4500 mm, making it half a meter taller.

Do you find that some car headlights are almost blindingly bright?

Yeah, seen some pretty bad stray- light even from factory- lights. Volkswagen 2010 to 2017? has a HID headlight option that is slightly miscalculated. ( the one without “ dancing") BMW had the same issue in some of their 3series and 5 series from the same period. Mercedes strangely never had any especially good light in my opinion. Even the HID headlights on late models feel below average at night. Best factory lights on a truck I found on a Volvo FH and FM. Not Scania nor Mercedes or any other I ve driven lately can compare to them when it comes to visibility without glaring.

Why do Volvo FH trucks carry the horsepower rating badge (420/460) even though torque matters most in heavy applications?

Torque is only a measure of twisting force. Power is the measure of something to do work. such as Hp is a work rating. Hp =Torque x RPM/ 5252. Kilo Watts is also a measure of work.

Are many America's bridges structurally deficient, and basically crumbling?

No. In general, 10 percent of all the bridges in the US are designed for smaller loads than the ones a big truck moves nowadays and 5 percent of the bridges in highways are in the same predicament. This does not mean the bridges are going to “crumble”: they are checked annually or every two years to guarantee they work as needed. You can check here the state of US bridges and highways in an easy way, as the Secretary of Transportation has the duty to report the state of bridges to Congress every two years. I quote the 2015 report, which is the last one I know: From 2002 to 2012, the share of bridges classified as “structurally deficient” has improved. For example, the percentage of bridges in this classification dropped from 14.2 percent in 2002 to 11.0 percent in 2012. The share of bridges on the NHS classified as structurally deficient also improved over the same period, dropping from 5.9 percent to 4.5 percent. Improving America’s Transportation Infrastructure: The Road Forward To understand what is being said, you have to understand what “structurally deficient” means. Road loads have increased since 1950’s when the NHS (National Highway System) was created. Of course, the bridges designed for a 1950’s truck were designed for lighter loads. 1950 GMC 650 semi truck: ,133 hp, GM 4-71 diesel engines with Spicer 5-speed overdrive transmissions and Eaton 2-speed rear axles, best selling truck in the 50’s able to pull around 40 tons maximum Volvo FH: 570 hp engine with 14-speed transmission rated for up to 100 tons As you can imagine, the 600,000 bridges that exists in the US are not going to replace themselves just because you change the trucks. It is going to take a while and, when you do change the bridges, new trucks with larger loads will require new bridges. It is a task that will never end. I am pretty sure that, if you have worked in an office, you could find “obsolete” PCs or laptops, perhaps one in 10 or one in 20 in the whole office. Of course they were checked more frequently for failures and were devoted to less stressful work. This does not mean that the computing power of your office is crumbling. It means things change and that is simply not economically viable to change all your computers (or all your bridges) every year depending on new work loads.

We know about supercars or hypercars, but never hear about supertrucks and hypertrucks. Why?

A2A its because people do not have so much interest in truck motorsporting or you dont follow trucking or they think trucks=commercial vehicle. But there are amazing truck and truck racing event. eg: VOLVO FH VS KOENIGSEGG ONE:1 ,(fastest car in world , unfortunately the truck lost the race) 2 SHOCKWAVE JET TRUCKS 3 T1 PRIMA TRUCK RACING(,held in month of march at Budha international circuit , Greater Noida , India, the trucks have more than 300hp BRITISH TRUCK RACING so you will find supertrucks and event related to them you just need to look out. its not much popular but there are many supertrucks. thanks

Why are big trucks towing 40 tons or more so underpowered as compared to sports cars?

It is all about Torque! Volvo FH 16, (2019) Volvo’s strongest engine to date, is the D16K. Power: 750 hp Torque: 3,550 Nm Displacement: 16 litres Gross Weight: 44–120 tonnes Dodge SRT Demon ( Most powerful production car till 2017) Torque: 1,044 Nm Displacement: ,6.2,-liter V8 Power: ,808 hp Weight: 1920 Comparison: ,Truck vs Car Torque: Volvo =,3550/1044, Nm = Car What is torque versus horsepower? Horsepower = Torque X High RPM (Rotation per minute) Trucks have ,LOW RPM! Large engines pump more air and, therefore, produce more torque. If you, increase the size of the ge,ar = ,MORE TORQUE (Less RPM) Trucks can tow heavy weight at low speeds, where as sports cars can reach high top speed with a lighter gross weight.

Do you save much petrol if you put a manual into neutral when coasting down hills?

It can save fuel! E.g my Volvo V60 with automatic transmission, when in eco-mode it coasts without the engine engaged to save fuel (downhill). The adaptive cruise control engages the engine and brakes when e.g. a car is too close infront of you. This is the case for many brands. Another example, high-end trucks (e.g. Volvo FH, Mercedes Actros) use built in topography maps to adjust the cruise control, they allow more coasting despite loosing speed if it knows that it will reach the top of a hill without more throttle, free-wheeling is also here a strategy to save fuel instead of braking away that energy. Regarding safety, brakes are inspected at least every 14 months, car with bad brake pads or other issues are rare on the streets (at least on my continent) anyway if your brakes are not functioning the inertia of the engines moving parts won’t save you.

What is the maximum speed of an 18 wheeler?

Depends on tractor and weight of trailer Volvo FH 750 can reach 160 km/h and can go beyond with 20 tons,I have driven FH 540 at 120 km for 22 km with 18 ton ,on trailer and FMX 440 at 130 with 9 tons.,Prima is 120 last. In Sims almost every truck goes above 400 hp can g0 beyond 100 with 9 ton load, It is not recommended to drive above 90 km/h as axles of trailers are not built for that speed and it is very difficult to control the vehicle at curves, I almost crashed my Scania at Lonavala ghat.
