ulzzang abs Q&A Review

Why do the fans of BTS get "triggered" by questions about the gender of the band members?

I feel that this is a question not just about BTS, but for male K-Pop groups in general. EXO, GOT7, Super Junior and other such male groups in the same thematic realm have, in the past- And in some degree to this day, have their sexuality constantly questioned by publics of various backgrounds. The underground K-Hiphop scene, scandals published in Korean media and mostly by outsiders with little insight on the differences in culture between South Korea and other nations. Other idols/idol groups like Jay Park and BIGBANG are usually not included in the chopping block because their content screams machismo and appeals to more male audiences. To begin, there is an inherent difference in culture between countries like South Korea, Japan and China (to a very limited degree) to the rest of Western world. The reason why I didn’t just say Asia is because societies in the most Southern parts of Asia (India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei) do not share the societal traits I will be discussing at the moment. They will also disdain from these three countries’ cultural quirks like more European and North American societies. The primary cultural value I will be referring to is “lookism”: a cultural belief that correlates one’s beauty with their personal success. Many of these Asian countries will place much value and privilege on individuals who are good looking. They are deemed friendlier, more trust-worthy, richer and more successful by those around them. Those who do not fit the mold are considered outcasts and have common misconceptions made about them, usually along the lines of social integration, romantic and sexual appeal and wealth inequality. Why is this a thing? Well, all animals look for potential mates with the best traits (strength, dexterity, beauty, etc.), so that their offspring may gain those better traits. However, just because it’s human nature doesn’t mean it’s right. Now the difference between South Korea and these other Asian countries in particular is that the standards of beauty for Koreans is *immensely* more difficult to reach than anywhere else. These blessed individuals, if they fit that culture’s beauty standards are even more valued and celebrated than if they were in other countries. There is this thing called 얼짱 or ulzzang, where everyday youth, both male and female, post photos of themselves online to be “the best-looking” individual via a competition with voters. So, the standard of beauty for males in modern South Korean society are as such: Physically tall, Athletic body, Fair skin, Clean, “trendy” hairstyle, Double eyelids (makes the eyes look bigger and rounder), Slender, “V-Line” face, Clean-shaven/minimal body hair (more common among youth), Fashion-forward clothing, and, Sense of “애교 or aegyo” (mannerisms of innocence, cuteness and affection that can be perceived by the watcher as endearingly romantic or sexual). That’s quite a bit of pressure, for anyone really. However, the K-Pop industry thrives on fans idolizing, fantasizing and ultimately objectifying their talents. That is how they earn their capital, through emotionally-invested fanbases that will pay good money to see their “perfect” idols. On the idols part, that means working hard not only on their talents and group dynamic, but also on their appearances. Diets, workout regiments, make-up, ever-changing wardrobes and hair colours, skin bleaching, “going under the knife…” The list goes on. Society, the industry and their own fans will pressure idols to conform to their standards of beauty and will retaliate when such an image of “perfection” isn’t achieved. For example, there had been a time when old K-ARMY lashed out at Park Jimin for “losing his abs.” Long story short: He was only known as the “guy with abs” early on in BTS’ career because he was the only member that was told to lift his shirt during a dance performance on TV. When he decided to focus on his musical and dance abilities, he allowed himself to “lose” his six-pack and people were irate over it. This was back when Jimin had little self-confidence, constantly having to see for validation from those in his general vicinity or online. He was devastated, until other K-ARMY, I-ARMY and his fellow groupmates helped him regain his confidence. Now, finally we lead back to the main topic. With this high standard of beauty that K-Pop idols *must* achieve to stay relevant in the cutthroat market, they have to put on make-up, to grow their hair and dye it, to wear trendy clothing, to bleach their skin and all other acts of beautification. All this effort to become “good-looking” can, and has been perceived by those without any inside knowledge of South Korean culture as “gay” or “homosexual behaviour.” Mind you, this kind of mentality is ethnocentric in the way where you’re evaluating the practices and values of others’ cultures based on a standard set by your own, or the “home” culture. ARMY, and in essence any other fanbase of a male K-Pop group are more aware of the societal pressures South Koreans face on a daily basis to literally save face. It is not necessarily because they are gay, but because it is their job to look a certain way, no matter the means. As with how they act towards fans with cute, “girly” gestures, and towards the other members with a high degree of skinship: It all goes back to aegyo. Idols acting out aegyo is both a type of fanservice to the fans and is also so integrated into South Korean pop culture that no one in that society bats an eye if male members of a group act “clingy” or “flirty” with each other (up to a certain degree, then which Korean media themselves will find it worthy of an article or two). Plus, groups have lived in a shared dorm for years, so they would be quite desensitized when it comes to the other members. They’ve seen everything there is to know about each other, and are indefinitely used to or even sick of it. Hope this much insight helps answer your question :)

What are the trainee years of each BTS member?

Jungkook,, the youngest of the seven member group, has so much talent under his belt and has accomplished so much for someone so young,.Jungkook was scouted by 7 other agencies. Some of these agencies included JYP Entertainment, FNC Entertainment, and Starship Entertainment., Out of all of the agencies, Jungkook ended going with Big Hit Entertainment. He was casted by BigHit after leaving the auditions for a Korean talent show called ,Superstar K2, ,when he was only 13 years old. Although he was accepted into the company via his singing, his dance skill were also extremely well developed. He had learnt b-boying from the age of 12 but was told that he had no emotion or expressions while preforming. So he went and studied in the, US under Movement Lifestyle,, an extremely prestigious dance company. ,He joined in 2011. Taehyung, trained for 3 years under BigHit and was originally scouted for his looks. Predebut, Taehyung was internet famous for his role as an ,Ulzzang (someone with a pretty face). ,Although Taehyung trained with the other Bangtan members, he was not revealed to be apart of the group until his debut teaser image was released. ,He was the longest trainee although he joined in november 2011. Jimin ,has been apart of the Busan (a major city in the south of South Korea) dancing scene since middle school. He made a local name for himself by joining many street dance groups as well as winning multiple talent competitions with his singing skills too. Even though he was the last member to join Bangan, he luckily only trained for one year under Big Hit. He considers himself ‘fat’ not only because of the Korean beauty standard but also because he HAD very chubby cheeks as a trainee. This has lead to Jimin being very self conscious about his looks and his weight. Although when he debuted, Jimin was known as the member with, “chocolate abs”,. ,He joined in 2012 . Hoseok,, again like Namjoon and Yoongi, was actively participated in the underground hip-hop scene. He had always loved to dance, and he even joined a dance crew called “,Neuron,” in his hometown of Gwangju, Korea. Because of his love for dancing, J-Hope auditioned for ,JYP Entertainment,. Although he passed the first few rounds, he eventually got cut from the JYP auditions. However, he made a name for himself through his dancing skills. J-Hope decided to audition for Big Hit Entertainment next. With his dance skills, strong understanding of rhythm, and potential for rap, J-Hope was accepted into the company. He moved to Seoul, and became a full-time trainee., He joined Bangtan in 2011. Before debut, Hoseok was a, backup dancer for 2AM’s Jokwon, where he appeared in the music video, “I’m Da One” ,along with other members,, Jimin and Jungkook. He also starred in Jokwon’s music video “Animal”. “Graduation Song” is a cover of Wiz Khalifa’s “Young, Wild and Free” that Hoseok produced with Jimin and Jungkook just before Jungkok Middle School graduation. Yoongi,, like Rap Mon/Namjoon, was an underground rapper until 2011 ( ,Suga,, was active in the underground hip-hop scene as a producer and rapper. Going by the name of “,Gloss,,” he began performing in high school, and made a name for himself. Suga had begun to establish himself as a producer, composing beats for local artists in his hometown of Daegu, primarily for a group called “,D-TOWN,.”) when he placed 2nd in the Big Hit auditions. This automatically placed in the BTS project where he trained for 3 years before debuting. His musical education started in 6th grade where he learnt classical composition and continued to compose whenever he had the chance. Since training under BigHit Ent, Yoongi has written and appeared in a number of albums and music videos. Kim Namjoon, aka ,RM,,, ,fell in love with rap after hearing ,Epik High,‘s “Fly” for the first time when he was in sixth grade. He began rapping on his own, and he started a career as an underground rapper under the name “,Runch Randa,” in 2007, when he was in middle school. RM decided to join a rap crew called “,Daenamhyup,,” which consisted of some of the top underground rappers. Members included ,Iron, (finalist from ,Show Me The Money 3,), ,Supreme Boi ,(Big Hit Entertainment producer), and ,KIDOH ,(from ,Top Dogg,). He released more songs, and collaborated with other underground artists, like ,BLOCK B,‘s ,Zico ,(who went by, “Nakseo” ,at the time). With his reputation growing, RM was invited to audition for an underground hip-hop agency. This was where he met ,Untouchable,‘s ,Sleepy,,, ,who was a judge at the audition. Sleepy was so impressed by RM’s rapping skills, he saved his phone number and passed it along to the producer ,Bang Shi hyuk. Through the introduction, RM ended up auditioning for Big Hit Entertainment, and became the first member to join BTS in 2010. Kim Seokjin, aka ,Jin,, had a different casting experience than the other members. Originally from Anyang, Korea, Jin was originally casted on the streets by ,SM Entertainment., He never followed up with the company because he thought it was a scam.He got street-casted again when he was a college student. A representative from Bighit entertainment saw Jin as he was exiting a bus ,and convinced Jin to audition for Big Hit. Jin had no prior experience singing or dancing. Because he was an acting major, Jin auditioned to be an actor. Big Hit Entertainment had other plans, however, and he ended up becoming a trainee for BTS. Rumor has it that Jin became the singer that he is today through hard work and practice, ,he joined in 2012. Order in which they joined the company: Namjoon Yoongi Hoseok Seokjin/ Jungkook Taehyung Jimin Hope this helps !!

Do normal Korean girls who aren’t famous really look like this? What do average Korean girls look like? Are the Korean beauty standards really that HIGH that they don’t consider average looking girls pretty anymore? Do all Koreans rly care ab KBS?

Normal korean girl? Heck No. The picture you showed was probably an Ulzzang, a beautiful ‘face’ on social media. That said, the average Korean girl (and boy) in Seoul is fairly fashionable and skilled with make-up. Its the same way that girls in Los Angeles/Hollywood are prettier than the average US girl.
