Is imposing a flat rate tax on setting up solar panels against free competition?

It probably depends on how much the tax is. Remember that governments have a right to tax, generally. What is chosen to tax is a political question. Some taxes are fair, some not fair, and it is generally corrected with elections. Similarly, whether a particular tax is good or bad policy is equally political. As a pro-solar, I think it's bad policy, and reflects the power of various entrenched entities. I don't think it's a human rights violation. It's in an area of trade where governments can and do put thumbs on the balance, in this case a way that seems wrongheaded. It you don't like it, vote them out.

Would a PV Solar module rated at 100 watts that is placed flat on the ground at the South Pole, make 2.4 kWh of electricity per day during the "summer" months?

Flat on the ground in mid summer the angle of the sun would be 23.5 degrees above the horizon. The simplistic calculation is that the output would be 100 * sin(23.5) = 40 watts or 0.96 kWh per day. However because the panel would be cold and the temperature coefficient is about -0.5%/deg C, at say -20 deg or 40 deg below the nominal temperature, the output could be 20% higher than the rated power. That would be 1.15 kWh/day. That’s the most simplistic calculation for a completely sunny 24 hours in mid summer. However, the other thing to take into account is the air mass that the sun shines through. At the low angle the light passes though much more air than at the equator and so the rule of thumb 1 kW/m,^2, comes down to about 0.75 kW/m,^2, so about 0.86 kWh/day. You might like to play with this stuff on ,Calculation of Solar Insolation This shows that you can do considerably better at a 70 degree tilt compared to horizontal in Antarctica.

Is it worth investing in solar energy in a residence in NJ? I have peak rates of 0.16 kWh, non-peak rates of 0.06 kWh and an average electric bill of $400/month. My flat roof can accommodate 100 panels.

If the taxpayers of NJ are funding you through subsidies, then it may be “worth it”, but otherwise, likely not. You probably need to figure out the KW the panels could produce on your “best” day in the summer and also figure out the cost of upkeep, as solar panels aren’t just set-and-forget.

The main current conflict is that utilities would like to end net metering as solar becomes a large fraction of generation. Currently hot summer afternoons are when electricity is shortest, but with much solar this may reverse to a surplus. Instead of a flat rate, utilities want prices based on supply vs. demand.

You could install a meter to measure how much is used and then charge something akin to what the electric company charges per kilowatt/hour, but you need to keep detailed records to prove your charges. Alternately, you could just charge a flat rate per month and add it to the rent as “electricity included”.

Why are electricity prices so high in Ontario?

There are a lot of reasons, partly to do with geography, partly due to policy and partly due to bad past decisions: Under Ontario law, the distribution companies can't charge different areas different prices. As such, communities close to hydroelectric generation, like Niagara Falls, pay roughly the same price as those in remote communities. Because the distribution network is an expense that generates no immediate income, rates help pay for this "flat rate" structure. However, if it were otherwise, electricity w0uld either be unavailable or overly expensive in areas that aren't close to generating facilities. As policy, the government wants to encourage renewable sources like wind and solar. As such, they pay a very high rate for those initially until the capital costs are paid for. That drives up the average rate. Although Ontario can generate a lot of power from cheap sources (hydro and nuclear), those sources alone can't meet peak capacity needs. As a result, they have to factor on more expensive sources, like oil and gas. A lot of Hydro's infrastructure, particularly nuclear, turned out to be a lot more expensive to maintain than was initially assumed. For example, the cost of refurbishing Pickering ate into the fuel cost savings. The money borrowed to finance expansion and overexpansion has to be paid back and part of the rate structure reflects that.

What would be the annual maintenance cost involved for a solar PV system?

Homeowners spend an average of $150 to have their solar panels cleaned. Depending on factors such as roof slant, home height and system size, companies charge between $3 and $10 per panel. Some charge a flat rate within a range of $150 to $350. Annual inspections are typically $150 before the cost of cleaning. But the solar panels generating that power don't last forever. The industry standard life span is about 25 to 30 years, and that means that some panels installed at the early end of the current boom aren't long from being retired.

How sunny does it have to be for a 315-watt rated solar panel to produce 315 watts of power?

Solar panels are rated at a reference sunlight level that roughly corresponds to full Sun (clear skies) on a flat panel at noon in an average location. However, this assumes that the panel is loaded to its maximum power point, in nearly new condition, and clean. To make this useful, you can find online calculators for the number of “equivalent full Sun hours” for your location and planned orientation. If, for example, your planned location and orientation has 4.5 equivalent full Sun hours for March, that means that on an average day in March, you can expect (4.5 X 315) watt hours of energy from a 315 watt solar panel mounted in that place at that angle and direction. This still assumes the panel is nearly new, clean, and loaded to its maximum power point.

The "electric theory" of the universe predicted quasars, the acceleration of solar wind, and other subsequent discoveries. Why doesn't it receive more attention these days?

First of all, it ,didn’t ,predict quasars. Quasars were discovered decades before the electric universe “theory” was made up. The electric universe theory gets no attention from serious scientists because it makes a ton of predictions that are flat-out ,wrong., For example: “The sun is negatively charged and solar wind is positively charged.” This is wrong on multiple levels: we’ve measured the charge on the sun and the solar wind (spoiler: they’re neutral), and if it were true that the sun were negatively charged and the solar wind were positively charged, the solar wind would flow ,into, the sun, not ,away, from the sun (protip: opposite charges attract). ”The craters on the moon were not made by impacts, they were made by lightning-like electrical discharges.” We’ve seen impacts on the moon and have observed them making craters. We’ve never seen lightning on the moon. “Stars do not shine because of fusion, they shine because they receive electricity from an unseen, unknown electrical generator in the center of the galaxy.” No such electrical generator has ever been shown to exist, and there are stars that aren’t part of a galaxy. Also: “Stars do not shine because of fusion?” We observe fusion processes in stars, and have replicated them on earth. You can build a fusion reactor in your garage! The electric universe idea predicts we should see characteristic radio-frequency noise generated by all this electric current. Electric discharge generates radio waves; that’s how spark gap transmitters work. No such RF signal exists. “Gravity is a form of electromagnetic energy and has positive and negative charges.” In fact, no “negative gravity” has ever been seen. “Electrical force travels faster than light.” In fact, we can measure the rate at which electrical force travels (spoiler: it isn’t faster than light). “Comets are electrical.” We’ve landed probes on comets. (Spoiler: they aren’t.) The electric universe “theory” is the cosmological equivalent of Flat Eartherism.

You are going to pay them over time usually 8 to 12 years and interest rate here is 2.9 % which is great. You get the 30 % tax credit. It goes down to 22 % on 2020. I did a proposal f my home. I need 11.5 kw at $ 3 10 per watt good price good warranty Tier 1 panels. Micro inverters. My electric rate is $ .13 cents per kwhr. Flat rates. Makes 75 to 80 % of load with some energy exporting in certain months. Payback is 11 years. So instead of renting electricity i am buying it f solar co. I now pay utility $ 235.00 per month. The solar deal is $ 210.00 per month f 12 years. So I save $15 per month. Then the utility charges me $ 30 per month for network access fees. So that is $ 360 per year. So the savings really get erased. at my stage of life its not a good move. I use to sell solar 10 years ago at higher prices. If you are young and if you dont need a big system. The numbers might work better f you. Savings driven by electric rate and sun hours. I got great sun but my ac uses too much power so I need more drives up cost I need more solar. So check your utility bill and if there are fees f solar system is a good thing to do . The avoided cost of utility power over 30 years w 1 % to 1.5 % inflation is close to $ 120,000. So that is incentive to buy if its a clean deal. A person in 40 s is good fit for long term. k regards
