flat rate cc Q&A Review

What is it like to purchase books on Amazon to be delivered to the Philippines?

It's a total waste of time and money, if they'll even accept your CC. Filipino customs is a pain. Probably Amazon shipments get held up because they think they might contain DVDs, electronics, not just books. So a big splashy Amazon logo is a huge liability, just like FedEx. The Book Depository, is a way better bookseller that ships to the Philippines and most international destinations, with flat-rate worldwide shipping, and prompt delivery (2 weeks from UK to Philippines!). Five stars, but it won't be getting five stars from Mrs Bezos anytime soon ;-)

What do you know and/or think about attending community college while at a 4-Year School?

I think you can potentially save some money if done right. This depends upon the cc class transferring and for you to pay by the credit at the university rather than pay a flat rate when full time. This can also depend upon the financial aid you receive. For the most part there is little reason. Maybe a summer class, but not at the same time.

Why do I get false copyright claims from YouTube?

Royalty free music is ,not free music., Royalty-free means you pay a flat rate in order to use in your project, you don’t have to pay royalties based on how many times you distribute it or how many times it is downloaded. So that might be the problem. The owner of the royalty-free music was not paid their flat-rate fee for use of that music, so they made a claim against you. It’s really hard for us to tell since you didn’t include any attribution for the music used, which is standard when making videos using someone’s content. Even free content. If you want free music, there are sources for that: ,Where can I find copyright-free background music for YouTube videos?, Or ,Creative Commons: Where can I find good CC-licensed music? I’ll add one more observation. The videos don’t seem to be original either. Did you download these and then compile a video which you uploaded to YouTube? Or do you actually use a video camera and shoot all of the video used in this project?

Would someone from the U.S. suffer a culture shock when they visit the UK for the first time?

I have been (and still am) an Anglophile all my life, so I was thrilled with the U.S. Air Force assigned me in 1986 to a three year tour at what was then ,RAF Upper Heyford, in the central part of England. I bought a house in the village of ,Brackely,, not wanting to hide out in base housing. In getting my house setup with utilities and such an early cultural shock was the fact that if you said your house was in ‘,Northamptonshire,’ you sounded silly, since everyone calls that county ‘Nothhants’. Oh, and I’m still not sure of the correct way to pronounce ‘Northhants’. A small culture shock occurred when the postman dropped off a letter marked ‘On Her Majesty's Service’! Sadly, visions of being recruited by “M” to assist MI-6 disappeared when it turned out to be a water bill or some such. Oh, and speaking of my water bill, I experienced a major culture shock when I was told water to my house was ,unmetered!!!!!!!!, I just paid a flat rate based on the number of ‘taps’ in my house. The concept of unmetered water to a Texan is as wonderfully bizarre to a Texan as a pub with unlimited free beer would be to a Brit. Speaking of British pubs, I did visit our local pub a few times, but I found that the air was so thick with cigarette smoke that I couldn’t really breath. To be fair, on a recent brief visit to London it seems like the Brits have moderated their public smoking habits somewhat, but they still love their tobacco. Here in Texas almost all land is privately owned, and trespass is a crime and occasionally punished by summery execution. When I got to England I was surprised to learn that trespass is usually considered a civil tort rather than a crime at all. I leaned about this when I discovered public footpaths, which are public rights of way that were established by the first primitive mammals emerging from the sea 450 million years ago. The public footpaths are delightful, very cheap sources of good exercise that give visitors a chance to see what the UK looks like away from the roads. Speaking of those early mammals , they had no concept of a straight road, and even after the Romans taught them the benefit of straightness the Brits still don’t really like nice straight roads. Many British place names are ,fun and interesting, to the Yankee ear. Oh, and that’s another thing. My Royal Air Force counterparts would often refer to us as ‘yanks’ or even worse, ‘Yankees’. In the sixth grade in Texas, at least back in the 1960s, if someone had called me a Yankee I would have had no choice but to immediately engage in fisticuffs to defend my honor as a southern gentleman. I never got used to being called a ‘Yankee’, even though I knew that these foreigners just didn’t know better, bless their provincial British Hearts. And while we’re on the subject of place names, one thing you need to know so as to not sound like a provincial Texan is that the pronunciation of place names has a lot to do with the accent of the reining Monarch at the time the place was named. It turns that over the long run of British history they have imported a number of Monarchs from Europe, especially Germany. Not being native English speakers these Monarchs had trouble with some place names, and therefore everyone to this day has to pronounce place names the way that old King or Queen did. I also understanding that raiding Vikings also contributed to strange British place name pronunciation. The classic case for military types is ‘,High Wycombe,’. You would think that this place is pronounced the way it is spelled, i.e. ‘High Y-comb’. Of course to pronounce this place name in the logical way would be to brand yourself as the most ignorant Texan rube of all time. The ‘correct’ (according to Brits) pronunciation is ‘,High wickum,’. And that is doubly odd since there are many place names that contain the word ‘wick’ or ‘wich’, but if you pronounce the ‘w’ you brand yourself as the most ignorant Texan rube of all time. Because again, some ‘Royal’ couldn’t pronounce ‘w’. I first ran into this oddity when I had the wonderful opportunity to spend several weeks as a guest of the Royal Navy onboard Her Majesty’s Ship ,Dryad,, where I stayed in the very historic ‘,Southwick house,’ (now an interesting tourist attraction, then an Officer’s Mess). Oh, fellow ‘yanks’, you may wonder why a ship would have a house on it. That is because most Royal Navy land installations are named ‘Her Majesty’s Ship ,Lower Cowshire, or something’, even though the are just land bases. Anyway, since the Royal Air Force has its headquarters at ‘RAF High Wickum’ , you might think this wonderful old manor house would be called ‘South Wick House’. Ahh, you’d be mistaken. The correct pronunciation is ‘South ick house’. Because some king couldn’t pronounce ‘wick’. (Bonus fun fact: I had a Batman! Not a caped crusader, a nice gentleman who brought me a cup of tea in my room every morning.) It turns out that there are lots of British place names with ‘wick’ or ‘wich’, and usually you don’t pronounce the ‘w’, because Kings. For example on the river ‘Thames’ (pronounced ‘Tems’) there is a historic place called ‘Wool-itch (Woolwich) which east of the famous ‘Green-itch’ (Greenwich), where time and longitude begin, even to this day. Of course if you are flying an airplane from the U.S. to the U.K. a good place to stop for lunch and gas is the Wick airport near the town of John O' Groats, which airport incredibly is pronounced ‘Wick’. Speaking of John O’ Groats, it is kind of quaint that Brits think ,driving from John O’ Groats to Land’s End ,is some kind of epic journey, since that is less distance than ,driving from Beaumont to El Paso, in Texas. To be fair, I’ve made both drives and I’d prefer the UK drive every time if given a choice. That is if I could afford the price of ‘petrol’ without the U.S. forces discount gasoline we had back then. I didn’t have much trouble driving on the left, because I had been stationed on the Japanese island of Okinawa. Apparently the Japanese had the misfortune of buying their first cars from the British, so they haven driven on the incorrect (left) side of the road ever since. Except for Okinawa, where our benevolent occupying forces taught the Okinawa people the correct way to drive to on the road. That is until about 1979, when in a moment of weakness Japan persuaded the United States to allow Okinawa to switch back to driving on the incorrect (left) side of the road, based on the silly excuse that in Japan everyone drives on the left, and WWII was over and we are all friends now, and we did promise to give Okinawa back to Japan. Which is all true, although I’d argue that friends don’t let friends drive on the left. Anyway, there came a day when we drove our cars home on the correct side of the road, and when we woke up and drove to work did so on the incorrect (left) side of the road. So I learned to drive on the left. What was shocking to this Texan was the tiny roads they have in the UK, combined with the maniacal driving habits of many Brits. For example, what the UK calls an ‘A-Road’ is what we in Texas call a ‘Farm to Market Road’. Except even our FM roads have at least small ‘verges’ (shoulders to you Yanks), which are usually absent in the UK. To be fair, Briton is an island nation and they just don’t have enough space for verges in many cases. They do have very curvy roads with hills, so blind passing is sort of a British national sport. And don’t get me started on round-a-bouts, a cancer that is spreading even to Texas! Really, who thought this was a good idea?????? (image credit: Wikipedia user Dickbauch , ,CC BY-SA 3.0, ) Texans in England quickly learn that English people really are very reserved, especially when meeting new people, and especially when they haven’t been drinking. Not that that’s a Bad Thing, they are just a bit different than Texans in that respect. On the other hand, when I vacationed in Scotland I found that Scottish people are almost as outgoing and friendly as Texans! That was a pleasant cultural shock. I’ve BS’d enough I think, but speaking of reserved Brits I have to share the story of the time my wife and I took the train from Bicester to London. We shared our compartment with an older, distinguished looking British gentleman. By then we knew enough to nod politely and then not bother him further. Anyway, we were talking among ourselves and I guess it became clear that I was a member of the U.S. Air Force. Suddenly, in his very correct ,RP accent,, the gentleman said something like ‘I was in the RAF also’. Of course I asked him about his service, and for the next half hour or so he shared with us fascinating stories about what life was like as an RAF pilot in WWII. My wife and I hung on his every word, this trip was a highlight of our time in the UK thanks to sharing a compartment with a real hero. As the train pulled into the station his face flushed a bit, and he said something “I am so very sorry I’ve rattled on like this, I recently had a stroke and I’m not always myself these days.” All we could do is gasp and thank the gentleman for sharing his past with us Texan ‘Yankees’.

Why did bombardier skip 602 and 603 in numbering the challenger 600 series?

I can’t say for sure but there were multiple variants of the 601 before the 604. I would guess one of these were the 602 and 603 or there may have been several test variants of the 604 that were never manufactured and would have been 602 and 603, that is how it usually works. If one is unable to make their own YouTube videos is it possible to make money by curating content from other people’s videos?

It is possible, however I have heard of many people having trouble getting their account monetized. However, as long as the content has a “Creative Commons (CC)” license attached to it, it is fair game to be reused. I will also say that another way to make money without creating your own content is to hire creators to work for you. You pay them a flat rate to make the content and you post. If you can get the revenue from ads or even affiliate marketing to be greater than what you pay the content creator, you can make great money from YouTube. This video explains that idea further: This should help!
