Is buying a modified EVO 9 a good idea?

Only if you have receipts of the work that was done and who did it. I can speak from the EVO’s competitor the Subaru STi. The modifications don’t add a whole lot of value to the car… Half the money of modifying a car goes into it as an enabler for more horsepower, it doesn’t actually gives you more horsepower and engine/driver safety features so you don’t launch the engine. A larger fuel pump is a perfect example of this, in itself it won’t give you more horsepower but it will keep your fuel injectors from starvation of fuel. I would also make sure the car was tuned by a reputable tuner and do your homework on whoever did the tuning. While I build my STi the tuning was done by the guy who created Cobb Tuning’s GTR program and he gave me cudos on the modifications that were done and how well they were done.

What are the things they don’t tell you about owning a supercar?

There are supercars that make sense and supercars that make no sense whatsoever. Here in upstate NY, owning a Ferrari or Lamborghini is crazy. It'll spend most of the year in the garage. I don't buy cars to keep them in the garage. I drive the shit out of them. I also get a huge kick out of taking something more pedestrian and turning it into something that will spank the shit out of cars that should demolish it. In 2004. I bought a Subaru Sti, which essentially starts as an Impreza, a 20k economy car. Over several years it morphed into a 600hp street car, which was a lot of hp until recently. A full roll cage, sequential shifter, racing coilovers, bracing etc. It could beat almost anything on the street from a dead stop through high G turns, including exotics. I could embarrass your 500k exotic with it. I even threw Blizzaks on it in the winter and played in the powder. I had a favorite setting for snow (one up from full open) on the center differential long before other cars came with them. Was it a supercar? No. Was it a super car? Fuck yes. The only guys stupid enough to challenge me were driving Audis…i didn't get it. They'd buzz around me on interstates to provoke a response. I'd laugh at them. It was at one time the most watched Subaru project build in the US. It evolved to the point where it couldn't pass inspection and I had to take it off the streets. It's now a GT Rolex level pro racecar running road courses with a dog box and almost 2 tons of downforce. We're about to drop in a race-built 6 cylinder from a Subaru Tribeca with a 75lb turbo. It'll be making 900 reliable horsepower out of a 3 litter (182 ci) displacement instead of 600hp from a 152 ci 4 cylinder. To all my American muscle friends, imagine 900hp out of 182ci. Nuts, right? I earned my pro racing license in my mid 50s. For letting it go, my consolation prize was an 09 Nissan GTR; one of only three sub 3 sec 0–60 cars manufactured at that time. I immediately started modifying it, starting with brakes (two piece rotors and Hawk street/race pads), Stillen sways and tuning. Within a couple of years the aftermarket caught up. I added Garrett ball bearing “30r” sized turbos, larger intakes, a high flow volume controlled exhaust system, Cobb AccessRace with TCM and I upgraded the transmission when it broke a yoke. The tranmission has broken two more times. It's now completely built to handle 2000 hp with a PPG helical gearset that whines in every forward gear. I love mechanical noises. I recently added Penske racing coilovers that are setup for the track. It looks bone stock. A true “sleeper” GTR. It has been my daily driver even in the salt covered roads of Northeast winters as long as there's no frozen precipitation because it's on summer extreme tires year round. It lives in the woods. The signs of all that use and abuse are not that obvious until we started digging into the car. It had 100,000 hard driven miles before we started it's restoration in November, which is rare for an 800hp GTR. In fact, it's the highest mileage GTR in my region of upstate New York. It's was tuned to the limit of the OEM rods, which is a real credit to my tuner. The restoration: Nearly every nut and bolt was replaced. We installed new oem front and rear subframes. The interior got a detailing and Recaro Speed GT seats. It also got beautiful red stitch on black diamond pattern mats from the UK. Engine: Cicio Performance (“Top Speed”) built the engine with Carillo rods and CP pistons, head work including .274 Cams, twin “Elite Prime Turbos” (.82 hot side. 65lb cold side), larger intakes, a larger ETS Intercooler, ID1700 injectors, an in-tank triple Walbro fuel pump setup, Tial BOVs and a 4″ high flow exhaust. Suspension: The same Penske coilovers set up for the track, larger front and rear sways, end links, front adjustable camber arms which were needed to make the Advan A6 wheels 20x11″ with 315 Toyos fit. We also had to hack the fender liners. The rear got 20x12 inchers with 325 Toyos. Brakes: We replaced the 2 piece rotors on all four corners and the rear parking brake assembly. Tuning: With Ecutek on a DynoJet: 1000whp on 93 / 1200whp on e85. Exterior: Outside, the exterior will remain stock until I decide to do a satin wrap. I'll be adding CF wide body front fenders. I would also add a taller adjustable spoiler in the rear, for more downforce, but I would also need to add a splitter in the front for balance and the car already sits too low for rural driveways as it is. I'll figure it out when the time comes. Was it a legitimate supercar as a stock GTR? Yes it was. It was conceived as Nissan's everyday supercar and it trounced high priced exotics when it was released in the US on ’09. Right now we're in budget hypercar territory power and handling- wise. About the only supercar that will be able to beat it on the street or the track will be another GTR with more horsepower. This summer, we'll be busy hunting down Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Vettes and other domestic performance cars. The “NYC Exotic Club” comes up to my neck of the woods several times a year to race the 8th mile at a local airport. For the 1/4 mile on the Toyos I'm expecting low 9 sec ET with a 160 mph trap. On slicks it should turn high 8s with a 165+ trap. Street car, racecar…same thing. This is my system for managing traffic stops. I call it, “love the cop you're with”. Which is the most iconic sports car in history?

The Nissan Skyline R34 GTR Why So This Iconic; Because It Mostly Among Younger Generation Of Car Fans, Its Often Movies And Gaming Gets People Into Cars. That’s Made Where Nissan Skyline R34 GTR’s Appeal Comes In Made Famous In The The Fast And Furious Film Franchise. And Is Also Made Famous In Video Games Like Need For Speed, Forza Franchise, Playstation’s Grand Turismo Franchise Etc. And Its Loved Dream Car For Many Of People. This Car Has Iconic Parts Such As Tail Lights, Long Hood, Big Air Dam, Flat Windshield, And Foxbody Styling. And It Introduced A New Car Feature That Would Be In Cars For Generations To Come A Multi Functional Display. The R34’s 5.8 Multi Functional Display On The Dashboard Had Critical Stats/Data About The Car Like Boost Pressure, Gas Petal Position, Fuel Injector Duty Cycle, Oil Temperature, Exhaust Temperature, And Intake/Intercooler Temperature. This Is Very Useful At The Track And Super Fun During The Driving In The City Or In A Town Or Driving On A Road Trip. This Car has unique Way Of Cooling The Brakes It Takes Outside Air Through Front Scoops On The Bumper, This Keeps The Brakes Cooled And Prevents Them From Fading During The Long Drives With A Lots Of Heavy Braking.

How do I pressurize a car's fuel system?

I put a JDM RB20det from a 1992 Nissan skyline gtr into a 1993 Nissan 240sx and the engine required a higher fuel pressure for a turbocharged engine with fuel pressure being secondarily modulated via a proportioning valve which increases fuel flow to remain near 11.7 stoic with increased fuel pressure in the fuel rail directly before the fuel injectors which are on a priority on demand hydraulic pumping system running at 45–60 psi. The stock USDM 240sx had a stock fuel pump for naturally aspirated engines with a fuel pump high side pressure of 15–20 psi and a total WOT (wide open throttle) of roughly 140% of full duty cycle flow on the stock 185cc injectors…. You could upon the injectors as much as 10 degrees before bottom dead center while the exhaust valves are still open to introduce additional mass flow rate through the engine during crossover and completely soak the back side of the intake valve with 230–250% of what is traditionally flowed in a stock ka24 engine making the stock injectors equivalently 350–400cc injectors capable of a really poorly tuned 350whp but the fuel flow capability of the primary pump was exceeded by the fuel demand of the rb20det under boost conditions above 4–8psi. So we had to install a fuel pump from a Nissan skyline or race performance level primary fuel pump which because of the costs associated with messing with the fuel system you are looking at anything from $250usd for a higher pressure and higher flow rate primary fuel pump and leave everything else stock for 60 psi or you spend $5–7k on a race trim fuel system and high pressure fuel system of 250–500 psi with injectors, fuel filtration, high pressure lines and fuel cell. There isn’t much of a dialectical perspective on fuel systems. If you are targeting 50psi of boost you need every ounce of capability in a full race setup with 1500cc injectors likely 15 gpm potentially two stage fuel pump system… and a roll cage and a mechanic who knows how to work on what you have.

How can a car with low engine displacement produce high power?

The basic thing is there are two type of engine under square (short stroke and wider piston) and over square (long stroke and smaller piston). But naturally due to short stroke and wider piston, more force will be transmitted to crank and as short stroke so lesser time will be taken to compete one revolition and vice versa. However the amount of power produced also depends on quality of combustion which mainly depends on combustion chamber (swirl produced and extent of homogeneous charge produced), placement of injectors and spark plugs, quality of spark generated, penetration of fuel injected and so on. Also just think about it, Audi SR 7 4 lt naturally aspirated, Jaguar F type 5 lt super charged produce allmost same BHp around more or less 526 and Nissan GTR 3.8 lt on the other hand profuce 590 bhp. So it's not like that, it depend on tech used which changes from company to company and how big minds RND guys've got... Cheers... Thanks for A2A...

What car do you currently drive? Is it worth the price you paid for it?

This is my car, a 2009 BMW 335i. When I first saw, heard and heard what these little BMWs were capable of, I was hooked. I had owned a 2002 BMW X5 for about a year and a half. Fantastic car, I loved every bit of it and even it’s funny quirks I loved. Which side note: If you’re in the market for an older used SUV, I would not hesitate to recommend one. Seriously, look em up, they boasted some serious performance for an SUV at the time, in fact they’re the reason we now have the Trackhawk. In 2003 BMW even built a one off version for LeMans that featured their famous V12 built for the McLaren GTR. It’s Nurburgring time is faster than an M2 and it’s still the SUV record to this day. Now off of that, as you can tell I love BMWs so naturally my next car needed to be one. Let me first say, I am 20 and a part time college student, both of these BMWs were bought and maintained by me, they’re not some unobtainable vehicle unless you’re crazy rich like some would have you believe. So then began my search. I looked and saved for about another year and a half until I found a 335 I would be willing to buy. Now don’t get me wrong with what I said earlier, these cars will eat your wallet if you let them. The pre-lci (meaning pre-2011) 335i features an engine known as the N54. It was BMWs first direct injection engine ever, as well as their first turbo engine since I believe the 1970s found in the 2002 Turbo. The N54 has a very long list of known issues. I’ll start the list here but give you a line break if you wanna skip it. So with the N54 engine, due to it’s new technology things fail, it is what it is and many revisions have been made and it seems many things are not such an issue anymore. First off we have the injectors. Due to the nature of the injector, BMW had a company known as Piezo make them. Piezo is a diesel injector company and direct injection uses a similar style injector. The issue was, Piezo was not exactly prepared to handle the ethanol content of US fuel. See Europe didn’t really have this issue due to the lack of ethanol in their fuel. It seems that it would eat away the inside of the injector as well as the seal on the tip, leading to a leak. This is not the only way they would fail, but the most typical. 12 revisions later and while they still fail, it’s after a much longer time span. Lucky for us BMW owners, FCPEuro exists and they lifetime warranty all parts so one set of injectors later and you’ll never pay for a new set again. Next on the list is turbos, they’re good for what they are but the wastegates have an issue. It seems over time they get loose and rattle until they become to loose to hold boost at all. However that typically doesn’t happen until 80k miles or so. BMW eventually, like with the injectors, increased the time/mileage of the warranty on these parts. Next is the high pressure fuel pump, used to feed the direct injectors. I really don’t have an answer as to why these were failing so often but it seems to be less common now. Then you have all the various plastic pieces on the engine. Most of the radiator hoses/flanges after many heat cycles will get brittle and crumble or break. However the most (annoying) of these plastic items is the valve cover. Around 90k miles or so (not always, plenty have gone longer) they seem to crack due to many heat cycles and obviously this requires a brand new valve cover. Now even with all of these issues (and there is a few more but not really worth mentioned, much rarer issues) the motor is still fantastic. It is very much a modern day rival to other inline 6 engines like the 2jz and RB series. Many will argue that BMW’s newer B58 engine is a better comparison and I would agree, however it is much more expensive to buy a vehicle with that engine. The N54, in it’s completely stock form (with various bolt on modifications) and stock turbos, is capable of 500 horsepower. If you upgrade the turbo(s) the stock engine is capable of 600–700 reliably. In fact I know someone who ran their N54 at ~700 horsepower for about 80k miles. These engines are awesome. So, back to my search. After about a year and a half, I finally found one that met my criteria. A lot of the issues I mentioned above had been addressed (… we’ll come back to that later) and it was in my favorite spec. Alpine white exterior with the coral red leather and brushed aluminum trim. It’s even a manual! Which for those of you who don’t know these cars, is very rare. I tried to do the research and I’m not sure how accurate this number is but I believe it to be 1/~500 in the US! So of course, I was hooked, had to have it. I paid a little more than the going rate for a car in the condition, but the manuals usually sell for more anyway so I was fine with it. All said and done, I paid a little over $10k for the car. I absolutely believe it was worth it. Every single day the car puts a smile on my face. It looks awesome, the interior is comfy and really doesn’t feel all that dated. Don’t even get me started on how this car performs. After some bolt ons, hell it spins wheels in 3rd gear at 60mph. Some serious fun for a not so serious price. I will say, it has given me it’s issues though. Shortly after buying the car I had all 6 injectors replaced (which are NOT cheap. Roughly $1200 is the cheapest you’ll all 6 of them at the moment. They have been cheaper previously though). After that I had the water pump take a dump on me, not an easy job to do but it’s doable. Then, the valve cover started leaking. Now, the previous owner stated it had been replaced. When I noticed this, I first thought that he had lied to me. I was wrong, in fact he simply just bought a VERY cheap one off of Amazon and of course, he not only installed it improperly but it had already cracked. Everything else i’ve replaced other than that was just me getting the car ready for more power. I truly love this car.

Edit: It had an upgraded clutch that was at the limit of our power level. In fact, he had to tune around it. The clutch blew on a 5th gear pull on an interstate. The transmission was dropped and sent back to Jack's for an 18 plate rated to ~1500whp and a billet shifter fork for 1-R. It's shipped and scheduled to arrive back on Thursday. Nissan says they'll have it finished by the weekend. Knowing that we left some power on the table during tuning, it's going back for a retune before spring. I'll post the dyno charts when I have them. Suspension: We kept the same Penske coilovers set up for the track, Eibach front and rear sways, SPL Pro endlinks, SPL Tintanium Series Front (adjustable) Upper camber/Caster Arms, Advan A6 wheels 20x11″ with 315 Toyo Proxes R888Rs. This is my system for managing traffic stops. I call it, “love the cop you're with”. Leo Ambrose's answer to Have you ever argued yourself out of a ticket?

What is the highest speed you have ever driven in a car?

heh, had a quick check on the statute of limitations on UK road traffic offences before answering this one... I'll make this one appeal to the geeks... Car : 1996 S14 200SX UK Spec.. mods: R34GTR Injectors Walbro Fuel Pump Custom Built exhaust and downpipe GTR FMIC Apexi AVCR Boost Controller Apexi SAFCII Fuel Controller uprated clutch, (not sure, think it was HKS) either a HKS or Apexi Exhaust Manifold UK Spec Z32 300ZX wheels with Toyo Proxes tyres Z32 300ZX MAF Sensor hybrid turbo fair few other bits like extra boost gauges... boost was set to 14psi for standard driving with a scramble button that knocked it up to 21psi for 30 seconds. anyway, I was driving down to London very very late one night, about 2am in the morning and I'm on the M6 toll road. I'm just ambling along at about 70mph and just as I get onto the toll road an M5 goes past me at a rather large rate of knots, being young and foolish at the time I decided to show him that his car was slow... by the time I'd caught up with him my speedo was off the dial (it went up to 160mph, but really aint accurate), I went past effortlessly, now normally, I'd have gone, hmmm, point proven, slow down to sensible again, but the road was empty, and the car had a fair bit to go so I kept the hammer down a bit to see what it would do, kept it going until it bounced off the limiter in 5th and then eased off, by this time I was coming up to the toll points where you pay so I slowed right down, paid my cash and bimbled on, a tyre blew out about 5 mins later. and yes, I absolutely shit myself thinking about what would have happened if the tyre had blown while I was going silly speeds. and it took a good few minutes before the M5 caught up and went past me... Nissan RWD Gear Ratios... RWD Nissan gear ratios, - mine was an SR20DET engined S14 rev limit is 7500 rear wheels were 245/45/16 you can work out how quick I was actually going from this...
