Why do automakers prefer Continental tyres?

Tyres, the round, black donuts that are often overlooked by its users. Objectively speaking, tyres are one of the most important components in your car. It’s been often said that tyres are your vehicle’s only contact patches with the road surface. Therefore, carmakers spend a considerable amount of time and effort to match the right tyres to their cars. It isn’t just about slapping on any random tyre on the cars that roll of the production line. Carmakers work very closely with tyre brands from

Goodbye turbos, hello electric motors – Continental selling off turbo division

Last month, we reported on the bankruptcy of legendary turbocharger manufacturer, Garrett. Why is my tyre shop trying to sell me nitrogen gas inflation?

You might have come across this scenario while sending your car to your neighbourhood tyre shop – after the job is done, whatever it may be, the tyre shop will try to upsell you nitrogen gas inflation for your tyres. You will mostly be shown some materials or be told that it is better to fill your tyres with pure nitrogen rather than regular air. You will also be told that nitrogen-filled tyres will save you fuel, prolong the lifespan of your tyre, require lesser maintenance, and are better for

No 10% drop in car prices despite 10% Sales Tax exemption, here’s why

As you already know, the government has announced that all new locally-assembled (CKD) passenger cars will be exempted from paying the 10 percent sales tax starting 15-June until 31-December. Imported new cars will be given a 50 percent discount on sales tax, meaning that sales tax is still applicable, but at a lower 5 percent rate. However, this doesn’t mean that the prices of new CKD cars will drop by 10 percent. Most cars only saw a reduction of between 3 to 6 percent. Why is that so? The sim

Warning lights on your car, what do they mean?

How many of you are aware of the warning lights on your car's meter cluster? You're not alone if you don't have a slightest clue at all. Unsurprisingly, some of us choose to ignore the warning lights entirely until the car eventually breaks down, and by the time that happens, it is a little too late to cry. While some warning lights may seem unimportant, it’s good to know what they mean and how to react next. Usually, warning lights illuminate whenever there is a problem with one or more of your

Here are some cars that go fast in style and comfort like the 620 PS McLaren GT

Grand tourer or GT is a phrase to describe cars made for high speed cruising, combining performance and luxury. Traditionally, most GT cars are front-engined and are heavier, which blunts agility and nimbleness. This is where the 2019 McLaren GT pulls an advantage over traditional GT cars. McLaren’s take on a GT car is to combine luxury, practicality and agility. Priced at RM 908,000 (without tax and options), the McLaren GT is motivated by a 4.0-litre twin turbocharged V8 that makes 620 PS and

Companies like Geely/Proton, Toyota, and Volkswagen bang heavily on modular platform technology in their marketing communications, while others like Mercedes-Benz, Honda, and Mazda don’t bother talking about it – with good reaso

Sony is not going to build cars which is why it built the Sony Vision S concept car

If you grew up in the 1990’s Sony wasn’t just “that company that makes PlayStations”. Sony was that rich kid who brought every imaginable gadget to school. They built radios, televisions, cameras, computers, phones, its own compact disc format, and even owned Michael Jackson. If that wasn’t enough, the Japanese giant revealed its first car earlier this year, the Sony Vision S. Billed as a concept, the Vision S looked like a Tesla, is said to be able to accelerate like one, and drive itself too.

Why do concept cars look so much better than normal cars?

As young car enthusiasts, we have all been excited by concept cars and their extreme aesthetics. The excitement usually comes to an abrupt end when you see the production version of the car – sporting smaller wheels, and looking like it gained a couple of pounds. As you mature, you make sense of the decisions to make production cars the way they are. Thicker tyres offer better ride comfort and a less sexy roofline actually makes for better ergonomics. A recurring theme you might notice in concep

A "cheap tyre” is going to kill you, here is why good tyres costs more
