Who here remembers Proton Eon Racing Team (PERT) that was formed in the late 1980s? It may not be familiar to some of you but they were the ones that laid the foundation for Proton R3 - which stands for Race, Rally and Research. The name’s a clue to its history. What's the history behind Malaysian number plates?

The ubiquitous number plate. These little black and white boxes on every road-going vehicle may seem like a boring topic to explore but look beyond the regulative reasons behind them and they actually have a pretty fascinating history. What purpose does it serve? Simple, really. It's a result of transportation being more accessible, and the government needs a way to regulate and control the vehicles pootling around. They're useful because in the event of an accident or a crime, authorities could

The original Baby Benz – The history of the Mercedes-Benz W201

When the Mercedes-Benz W201 made its debut in December 1982, its looks were far from unique. However, the entry-level model that slotted below the E-Class, S-Class, and SL-Class in Mercedes-Benz’s line-up has become a truly sought-after model and a symbol for the German brand’s future endeavour. The timeless shape and design were penned by Bruno Sacco. Its sharp lines were reminiscent of its siblings, giving it a very distinct, Teutonic Mercedes-Benz look. This W201 was also known as the Baby Be

Perodua Nautica – Is the successor to the Kembara really a bad car?

It was one of the worst-selling Perodua models ever, but the Perodua Nautica wasn’t a problematic car. It was the successor to the popular Kembara and Perodua was riding on a wave of successful models then as the second “national” carmaker began to overtake Proton as the best-selling make in Malaysia. To call the Nautica the worst Perodua model because of its lacklustre sales is pretty unfair considering what actually went wrong. But before we dive right into what went wrong with the D55L’s pred

The Toyota Hilux is 52 - here's the history behind Japan's iconic pick-up truck

Fifty years is more than enough time for a carmaker to introduce a model, facelift it a couple of times, kill it and then bring it back as a crossover or whatever's trendy. Not many can say they 'remained true to the original', but the Toyota Hilux certainly can. Cars evolve all the time (see above). It's quite a feat if a carmaker manages to stay true to its original recipe yet continue to improve, and that's pretty much what the Hailak has achieved in 52 years. Before Toyota Hilux Interestingl

The evolution of Perodua “kosong” spec cars

Cars are expensive. We usually take 5, 7, or even 9 years just to pay them off. Some of us may take the Dave Ramsey route of avoiding loans, but that’s not a popular thing to do. With the tight-budgeted consumer in mind, auto manufacturers have provided us with base spec or “kosong” spec cars. As basic as they are, they serve the purpose of taking you from one place to another. A “kosong” spec car may have been your first car, the company car, or the car you learned to drive in. These cars remin

Daihatsu: No future for Indo Perodua Bezza, DN F-Sedan concept killed

Daihatsu has no plans to introduce any sedan models in Indonesia, said the No.2 car brand in Indonesia during an interview with CNN Indonesia. Previously, the company did mull over the prospect introducing a sedan to Indonesia. In 2017, the company previewed the DN F-Sedan concept at the Gaikindo Indonnesia International Auto Show. The low slung, almost coupe-like roofline of the DN F-Sedan was originally conceived as a stylish budget four-door sedan, sharing the same mechanicals and platform as

With the on-going Covid-19 putting a damper on businesses, you would expect that a budget car brand like Perodua, whose range of lower priced A- and B-segment cars are bought mostly by lower income B40 group consumers, will be affected more than higher range brands. Actually the opposite is true. Save up to RM 50k on a recond car or go for Certified Pre-Owned car?

When it comes to shopping for a car, terms like reconditioned cars and certified pre-owned (CPO) cars get tossed around a fair bit.
