Economist calls to lift import and excise duties on CBU cars in Malaysia

An economist has called for the government to consider ending Malaysia's protectionist measures for the automotive industry by lifting import and excise duties on imported completely built up (CBU) cars. Barjoyai Bardai, a lecturer from the Universiti Al-Madinah, told Free Malaysia Today that the protectionist measures will ultimately have to come to an end one day. The government should take this opportunity during the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) to make a trial run. Under the presen

Indonesia will limit import of Proton X70 until Malaysia opens up its car market further

Last week, this column discussed the challenges that lie ahead in exporting the Proton X70 to Indonesia. While the Proton X70 was able to race to the top of the sales chart almost as soon as it was launched, it will not enjoy such luxury in Indonesia. As an imported model, the Indonesian government will certainly not grant Proton any tax incentives the way the Malaysian government does. Without a significant price advantage, it’s will have a harder time going up against the Honda CR-V. To win ov

No 10% drop in car prices despite 10% Sales Tax exemption, here’s why

As you already know, the government has announced that all new locally-assembled (CKD) passenger cars will be exempted from paying the 10 percent sales tax starting 15-June until 31-December. Imported new cars will be given a 50 percent discount on sales tax, meaning that sales tax is still applicable, but at a lower 5 percent rate. However, this doesn’t mean that the prices of new CKD cars will drop by 10 percent. Most cars only saw a reduction of between 3 to 6 percent. Why is that so? The sim

Is the road tax actually cheaper for electric cars in Malaysia?

We’ve seen the launch of the Porsche Taycan and the MINI Cooper SE in Malaysia this year. They were surprisingly priced lower than our expectations. The MINI Cooper SE has a price tag of RM 218,380 and the Taycan 4S starts at RM 725,000. We did expect the MINI to be priced lower than the BMW i3s, but the Taycan is cheaper in Malaysia than it is in Thailand. The “low” price of these cars could be a result of the 10% excise tax on all electric cars as opposed to 60% to 105% for ICE cars. When we t

Road tax paid to JPJ don’t go to road maintenance, so what are we paying for?

Most of us take it for granted that road tax, by virtue of its name, goes directly into maintenance of non-tolled roads, but that's actually not true. Instead, road tax is just yet another channel of government revenue, and it's not used exclusively for road maintenance. Which begs the obvious question, what are we paying for then? Before we go further and for the benefit of those who missed our last article, here's some background. The former Director General of MIROS (Malaysian Institute of Ro

Sales tax exemption: Car companies scrambling for answers

It’s a frantic start of the week for many staff at car companies. Following Friday’s announcement by the Prime Minister that locally-assembled cars will be exempted from paying 10 percent sales tax while imported vehicles will see the rate reduced by half, many car companies are swamped by calls from their dealers and stakeholders asking for details on what’s the next step. Without the necessary paperwork, the Accounts/Finance division at car companies are unable to proceed or give any answers.

Zero tax for EVs in Malaysia soon, but there's a catch

Prices of electric vehicles (EVs) in the near future could be cheaper, as a draft roadmap by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (Greentech Malaysia) revealed. As part of the upcoming roadmap aptly called Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB), one of the proposals is to waive excise duty and import tax for up to 100,000 units of EVs until 2022. Though curiously, if you take a look at the LCMB booklet (which can be downloaded on MGTC's website), the figure changes to 10,000 un

Malaysians pay over RM 10 billion in car taxes every year. How did we end up like this?

Malaysia is known for having one of the world’s highest taxes on cars. Sales of new cars and spare parts for motor vehicles are the single largest contributor in import and excise duties collection, eclipsing tobacco and alcohol products. How much taxes do car sales contribute to the Malaysian government? The government doesn’t provide a breakdown of its tax collection by industry, but it is safe to estimate that the automotive sector contributes well over RM 10 billion in taxes every year. So i

5 cars with the highest road tax price in Malaysia

Some say that our road tax structure is archaic and demand an emissions-based system. One way to pay less road tax in Malaysia is to opt for a smaller engine, which usually means opting for turbocharged cars or hybrid cars. The road tax of a car can be a deal-breaker to some, and it is one of the reasons we don’t see that many V8 engines around. Used cars with big engines are a big turn off, since the annual road tax is almost half their value. So, just how expensive can the road tax be? Well, h

Sales tax exemption: Some cars save you just RM 1k, others over RM 10k, find out which is which

As you already know, the government has announced that it will be waiving the 10 percent sales tax for locally-assembled (CKD) cars while imported (CBU) cars will see their sales tax reduced by half, to 5 percent. The sales tax exemption/reduction is applicable from 15-June to 31-December 2020. Specifics on how will this be implemented are still unclear, so we will have to wait a little longer. For example, will the kick-off/cut-off date be determined based on the vehicle’s registration date or

How is this possible? Proton X50 is cheaper than tax-free Honda HR-V

As all Malaysians know, taxes weigh very heavily in pushing car prices up in our country. The government relies on the car industry to fill up over RM 10 billion worth of taxes annually. Free-trade agreements aside, the only way to go around this is to assemble the cars locally, but this only allows a manufacturer to skip the 30 percent import duty. The elephant in the room is excise duty, which ranges between 75 percent to 105 percent depending on engine capacity and body type. Excise duty appl
