2020 Proton X70 CKD fuel consumption test, 7.6L/100km possible?

The 2020 Proton X70 CKD is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 184 PS and 300 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Proton claims the X70 CKD returns 7.6-litre/100 km, so we put it to the test. All tyres were inflated according to the manufacturer's recommended tyre pressure of 230 kPa (cold tyres) for all four tyres. Then the Proton X70’s 60-litre fuel tank was brimmed. Driving behaviour was as per a normal driver, accelerating and brak

But as the dealer had no Myvis on sale he was directed to test drive the blue 2016 Perodua Axia instead. The suspect was accompanied by a sales representative from the dealer during the test drive. Buying used cars: How to test drive a used car?

Buying brand-new cars without test driving them is common, especially when shopping for an econobox. These days, you can learn more about a brand-new car just by browsing the internet. The COVID-19 pandemic has also pushed brands to enhance their respective virtual showrooms. While shopping for a brand-new car can be safely done without a test drive, the same couldn’t be said about used cars. Test driving a brand-new car is meant to impress you with all the bells & whistles and the “joy of drivi

Haval H6 airbags failed to deploy in C-NCAP crash test, cries foul over improper test

While the Haval H6 may have overtaken the Geely Boyue (Proton X70 to us) as the best-selling SUV in China, recent events could slow sales down a bit. The reason is because a recent crash test of the Haval H6 by China’s C-NCAP raised an eyebrow or two amongst the automotive scene in China. In the C-NCAP crash test, the Haval H6 aced the full-frontal crash test as well as the 40% offset frontal crash test, but where it got interesting is the side impact test, as the H6’s curtain airbags failed to

Why the 2020 Proton X70 CKD no longer have an AWD variant?

Proton dropped the all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant for the 2020 Proton X70 CKD line up and some consumers are bothered by it. During the media test drive, Proton engineers explained why they didn’t offer an AWD option for the 2020 X70. The reason is simple, the Malaysian market simply does not demand for an X70 AWD variant. Of the 29,000 units fully-imported (CBU) Proton X70 sold last year, less than 4% of the customers picked the AWD variant – that’s only about 1,160 units of the total sales. Mor

Owner Review: C-segment For Under RM100K - My Proton X70

** This article is the personal experience of a 2020 Proton X70 Executive owner and does not necessarily reflect the views of WapCar. Facebook: Norazam Manan Proton X70, C-segment For Under RM100K I had been waiting for the launching of the Proton X70 CKD for the longest time, when it finally came on 12th February, and booking for the Standard model was made the very next day after a test drive. I had also tested Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail and not forgetting the CBU model. The shortl

Is it true that the Proton X70 suffers from high fuel consumption?

Weighing nearly 1.7 tonnes for just a five-seater SUV, the Proton X70 is the heaviest C-segment SUV. Naturally, its fuel consumption is higher than the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, or even Nissan X-Trail. But how much higher? Curiously, Proton doesn’t provide any official fuel consumption data for the Proton X70, which is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-litre direct injection engine. A similarly turbocharged but 1.5-litre Honda CR-V 1.5 TC-P has a claimed fuel consumption of 7.0-litre/100 km. The equiv

Hyundai MR23T test mule spotted, a mid-engine rear-wheel drive hatch?!

There’s a mysterious Hyundai MR23T spotted being ferried around in South Korea and reports claim that this is the test mule for Hyundai’s next mid-engine rear-wheel drive mega hatchback! These pictures were uploaded to Korean car website, Bobaedream. From the pictures, we can see a Hyundai Veloster that’s been heavily souped-up with flared wheel arches and aggressive bumpers. What’s interesting is the ‘MR23T’ text plastered on the side and rear of the car. ‘MR’ is often understood as the short f

2021 Toyota Corolla Cross vs Proton X70 – Still want that X70?

It is inevitable, comparing the recently-introduced 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross against one of the most popular SUVs around – the Proton X70. After all, seeing that the price of the top-spec Proton X70 is very close to the entry-level Toyota Corolla Cross (RM 123k vs RM 124k), cross-shopping between the two is bound to happen. Therein lies the question: for roughly the same amount of money for the top-spec Proton X70, should you, or should you not, add a little bit more money and get the 2021 Toyo

Without taxes, the 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross is cheaper than a fully loaded Proton X70

Taxes imposed by the Malaysian government is responsible for bumping up prices of the 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross by nearly RM 30k. Without taxes, the Thailand-made (CBU) Toyota Corolla Cross sells for RM 104,682 for the 1.8G and RM 106,417 – a negligible difference for the added noise insulation, better LED headlamps and taillights, plus a full suite of Toyota Safety Sense. Once you pile on the applicable taxes - already deducted, approved by the Ministry of Finance in view that only 750 units wi

Proton X70 – What needs improving?

When Proton first launched the X70 back in late 2018, consumers were sceptical of the car’s Chinese roots – will it be problematic, they asked. Well, that comes as no surprise, considering the history of Chinese cars sold here in the past. With the X70, Proton and Geely hope to change the perception once and for all. Despite all of their efforts, the X70 is not perfect and has some (minor) shortcomings. Is the Proton X70's fuel consumption poor? We are aware that a lot of owners have lamented ab

Quick Review: 2020 Proton X70 CKD, the devil is in the details

The long-awaited 2020 Proton X70 CKD (locally assembled) is now finally in Malaysia and we were fortunate to spend a short drive in it from KL to Kuantan prior to the official launch. Although brief, the Malaysia-assembled Proton X70 left a lasting positive impression. The Proton X70 was first introduced in Malaysia in the tail-end of 2018 as a fully imported (CBU) unit from China with customer deliveries started in 2019. Between 2019 to January 2020, over 29,000 units of the Proton X70 found ho

Proton X70 1.8T 2WD fuel consumption, 7.5L/100 km possible only if you don't get stuck in traffic jams – Ratings

Ever wondered what is the fuel consumption of the Proton X70 1.8T 2WD? We put Proton X70 through our WapCar fuel consumption test and here are our Proton X70 fuel consumption test results. The Proton X70 Premium 2WD sold in Malaysia is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder petrol engine linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Review: Can the Honda CR-V still justify itself against the Proton X70?

Let's be honest here, the Honda CR-V has seen better days. Before the introduction of the Proton X70, it was the default choice for families looking for an SUV. There were many decent alternatives to the Honda CR-V - the Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, or even the similarly priced but 7-seater Mitsubishi Outlander - but none could challenge the Honda CR-V's dominance. All that changed when the Proton X70 undercut everyone else in price. The X70 is far from being a perfect family SUV. In fact, it has

2020 Proton X50 gets 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating but X70 still safer

The results are in! Well it’s not the prices that are finally announced but the Proton X50 has scored a 5-star rating for ASEAN NCAP. However, its overall score is lower than its larger sibling, the X70. The X50 is Proton’s seventh model that underwent the ASEAN NCAP assessment. While the model tested is a Standard variant which is the lowest-spec model on offer with 4 airbags, it is the norm for crash test labs to use the base model in their tests. Is it true that another right-hand drive Proton X50 has leaked?

Recently, a suspicious photo began circulating on social media, depicting what appears to be a right-hand drive Proton X50. But is it real? Like the photo we debunked last week, there’s a good chance this photo is a fake. The biggest giveaway is the left stalk behind the steering wheel, as the wiper stalk is mirrored wrongly. Check out the Proton X70’s wiper stalk for comparison. Note that the Proton X70's wiper stalk is on the right side of the steering, not the left. Then there’s the somewhat

2020 Proton X70 CKD: Here's the confirmed specs

Ahead of the locally-assembled (CKD) Proton X70’s debut, it appears that some dealers have begun releasing details of the new model. Why does it take so long for Proton to “merely” convert to right-hand drive?

Many are waiting for the Proton X50’s launch with bated breath. So, what’s taking so long to simply convert the car from left to right-hand drive? Well, the Proton X70 underwent the process and to better understand it, Zhejiang Geely Holdings gave an insight into its development. They pointed out that the process is rather more involved than just changing where the driver sits. In total, 761 parts from the Geely Boyue had to be changed to create the Proton X70 and that’s before you count parts t

Proton ended 2019 on a strong note, firmly putting the Proton X70 as the undisputed leader in the C-SUV segment, with over 13,300 units, eclipsing the Honda CR-V’s 12,000 plus units.
