  • Used Toyota Sienta: From RM 70k, skip the 12-month wait for a new Alza with this quirky JDM MPV

Introduced in Malaysia in 2016, the Toyota Sienta didn’t exactly get off a great start. Despite being manufactured in Indonesia and imported (CBU) to Malaysia, the ASEAN-spec Sienta is actually derived from a Japanese domestic market model, which explains its quirky exterior and funky interior. And due to that, many Malaysians didn’t exactly welcome the Sienta with open arms. Yours truly knows this first-hand, as some family members wasn’t too receptive of the Sienta’s quirky exterior design. Bu

The all-new third-generation 2023 Toyota Sienta might be suitable in urban and modern markets like Japan and Singapore but don’t simply think it wouldn’t be offered in other countries, at least officially. Our colleagues over at AutoFun ID have discovered patent images of the all-new Sienta in the latest documents of the Indonesian Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) that were just recently published. Registered under the number A00202202287, the Sienta’s design patent was filed

  • Next-gen 2022 Toyota Sienta will be able to park itself, looks quirkier than initially expected

The Toyota Sienta once fought against the Perodua Alza in Malaysia, but it couldn't quite catch on and was discontinued after just three years here. Sales continued elsewhere, and a third generation is coming, as these pictures off Japan show ahead of its August launch. Quirky gets quirkier, as the new Sienta wears a face not unlike a friendly robot on its traditional, breadloaf-shaped silhouette. The rear is as round as can be, and the MPV now gets high-mounted taillights. Also read: Scoop: A f

  • Used Toyota Sienta - From RM 56k, skip the Alza's 10-month waiting period and get 2 powered sliding doors for free

At the time of inception, many current examples of what we affectionately refer to as “modern classics” were likely considered “ahead of its time.” They broke the mould, didn’t fit in or weren’t like the others. Again, these terms are often reserved for sports cars or luxury offerings, such as the all-new Toyota Crown, and not your run-of-the-mill mini MPV like a Toyota Sienta which we're about to do so now. You see, back in August 2016 when the second-generation Sienta was launched here, many w

  • Scoop: A flop in Malaysia, all-new 2022 Toyota Sienta to be launched in Japan in August

The Toyota Sienta is one of the quirkiest MPVs sold in Malaysia but it was due to said quirkiness that it became a flop here. Over in Japan though, where it is primarily developed for, the Sienta has been quite successful, having been on sale in its current generation since 2015. Still, it couldn’t match its biggest rival, the Honda Freed in sales. Consistently, the Freed has been outselling the Sienta in Japan and in 2021, the Freed and Nissan Note were the only non-Toyota models to make it in

  • Was it the quirky looks? These are reasons why the Toyota Sienta wasn't popular in Malaysia

Let’s face it, when it comes to MPV selection in Malaysia, the Toyota Sienta isn’t likely to be the default choice for many. Malaysians would rather stick to more popular models such as the Toyota Wish or Honda Stream. And that is also the reason why the Toyota Sienta was relatively short-lived in Malaysia, having lasted on sale from 2016 to 2019, which was also the year Toyota launched the facelifted Sienta – a model that Malaysians did not get. • Tales of opposites - Alza's twin, the Passo Sette has to die for Toyota Sienta to thrive

To the average Malaysian, picking an MPV for their family needs mostly boils down to brand and model, with little emphasis paid to whether said MPV has sliding doors or hinged doors. The same cannot be said for the Japanese market. A hallmark for Japanese market MPVs is the availability of sliding doors. It doesn’t matter if the doors are power-operated or manual, having sliding doors over regular hinged doors is a must for the model to succeed in Japan. But why sliding doors over hinged doors?
