If you have a budget of around RM 40k and you’re looking for a brand-new car that gives you the biggest bang-for-the-buck, then look no further than the 2022 Proton Saga.
The 2022 Proton Saga facelift (MC2) was recently launched with minor visual updates and a host of new features that further adds value. Prices start from RM 34k to RM 44k for the range-topping Premium S variant. Our focus here will be on the range-topper.
But before we move on, we’d like to give props to Proton for extending the safety package to the base variant.
All automatic variants (from Standard AT onwards) of the Proton Saga are equipped with electronic stability control (ESC), traction control (TC), and hill-hold assist (HSA), on top of the standard dual airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA).
Another big news is that the Proton Saga now comes with keyless entry and push-start button, auto-folding mirrors, plus a boot release button on the tailgate (available on the Premium S variant only), addressing one of our few ergonomic complaints we had with the pre-updated Proton Saga and makes it more of a complete package.
As a bonus, the air-conditioning system is fitted with an N95 cabin filter, capable of preventing particles larger than 0.3 microns from passing through, including dust, bacteria and other pollutions; ensuring that the air inside the cabin remains clean. It also offers greater protection against Covid-19.
One of our favourite features in the Proton Saga would be the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. For the Premium S variant, it gets an updated unit with more colourful screens, support for phone mirroring (for both Android and iOS devices), and a “please check your belongings” warning.
First impressions of the system are positive, as it remains slick to operate with clear graphics. And if the Premium variant is anything to go by, audio quality from the 4-speaker system is rather impressive in respect to its segment. Put it simply, no other infotainment system at this price point comes close to the Proton Saga in terms of interface and sound quality.
On the move and like any other Proton cars, ride and handling is superbly judged. It handles reassuringly and the suspension settles quickly over lumps and bumps. But it’s not just the better driving experience that the Proton Saga has, it’s also more comfortable than its nearest rival, the Perodua Bezza.
The Saga’s superior sound insulation that makes for a quieter cabin and the excellent suspension makes it a better long-distance companion. Be it enthusiasts or the casual everyday driver, everyone can appreciate the added comfort.
Granted, the Perodua Bezza does appear more enticing on paper with its lower fuel consumption and larger boot space. But we don’t drive on paper and things that brochures cannot convey are the slick infotainment system, excellent road manners, and high comfort levels that the Proton Saga possesses.
So, do experience the 2022 Proton Saga with its updated features for yourself. Experience the comfort and stability of the Proton Saga, and you might just find that it’s a better car to live with on a day-to-day basis.
The quest for automotive knowledge began as soon as the earliest memories. Various sources information, even questionable ones, have been explored including video games, television, magazines, or even internet forums. Still stuck in that rabbit hole.
