The wait for the locally-assembled (CKD) 2024 VW Golf R may not be for too long more as the company resolves technical issues with the government during the homologation process, says Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia Managing Director, Denyu Bostandzhiev.
"We had certain issues with the government during homologation, technical stuff. Something to do with the axles' certifications, as the Golf R is 4x4 [all-wheel drive]. It'll be the first 4x4 Golf that is produced here," clarified Bostandzhiev, assuring that production has been underway.
It will also be the first time a Golf R is made anywhere outside of Wolfsburg, Germany.

However, he assures that production has been underway and deliveries will begin soon. "I think it's only a matter of couple of weeks, we will release the cars," he said, speaking at the press conference of the launch of the 2024 VW Touareg yesterday.
VPCM first announced the CKD Golf R in August 2023. Prices are estimated to be in the ballpark of RM 330,000 to RM 350,000, which is circa RM 100k cheaper than the fully-imported (CBU Wolfsburg) model that was sold for around RM 431k.

As previewed, the CKD Golf R adds a R Performance Package, titanium Akrapovič exhaust system, a new rear spoiler, 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels and the new “Drift” and “Special” driving modes.
Another big update for the 2023 Golf R is the inclusion of the VW IQ Drive ADAS suite, with features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Travel Assist, Side Assist (blindspot information), Front Assist (FCW and AEB), Lane Assist (lane-keeping) and Emergency Assist; which brings the car to a safe stop if the driver is unresponsive.
Under the hood, the Golf R is powered by the EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 320 PS and 400 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.
