Mere days after the new 2024 Toyota Camry (XV80) debuted at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show, a slightly different new Camry was revealed on the other side of the world. At the 2023 Guangzhou International Motor Show, Toyota pulled the covers off the Chinese-spec XV80 Camry.
Visually, both Camry are largely similar in design though the Chinese-spec has different front looks depending on the variants. Buyers can choose between a sportier honeycomb front grille design or a more subdued cross-shaped approach.
The rear is also almost indistinguishable between both markets though the sportier-looking Chinese Camry variant gets a piece of black trim connecting the taillights.
While the exterior designs of both markets are almost hard to tell apart, the interior is easier to distinguish with different centre consoles.
Case in point, the HVAC controls. While the US-spec Camry uses a traditional button-style format, its Chinese counterpart utilises a more modern and cleanly integrated touchscreen-style design ala Kia though it isnβt as configurable as the Koreans.
Meanwhile, the Chinese XV80 Camry continues offering a petrol powerplant and two petrol-electric hybrid powertrains. The sole petrol unit consists of a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre unit while the two hybrid powertrains are 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre displacements.
Power output figures have yet to be released for the new China-spec Camry but Toyota has claimed improved performance.
Another figure that is yet to be revealed is the price and Toyota's Chinese website still lists the outgoing XV70's prices.
Despite being given a new model code, the new Camry is more of a deep facelift than an entirely new generation. The Camryβs global presence is shrinking though it is still a major seller in the States and China.
As for Malaysia, we will have to wait and see for its arrival though Headlight Mag speculated that the new Camry could be making its way into the Kingdom in October 2024. The automotive outlet reported that the Thai-spec 2024 Camry could be based on the Chinese-spec model.
Since the outgoing Malaysian-spec XV70 Camry is fully imported (CBU) from Thailand, suffice to say that once the new XV80 is launched there, we might get our hands on one not too long after. The XV70 Camry is available in Malaysia with a single variant, the Camry 2.5 V which starts from RM 219,800.
