Thailand says 'watch and learn' - BMW to start CKD production of battery EVs in 2025, RM 211.2 mil investment 01

BMW Group Thailand will start local production of battery EV (BEV) models in the second half of 2025. The fully electric BMW models will be powered by high voltage batteries produced at the company’s new battery plant.

Established under BMW’s ‘local for local’ principle, the new 4,000 square metre battery plant in Rayong will assemble imported battery cells into modules which will then be integrated into BMW Group’s Gen-5 high voltage batteries.

The investment by BMW is worth 1.6 billion Baht (~RM 211.2 million).

The project is not the German marque’s first battery assembly project. In 2019, BMW Thailand started producing high voltage batteries for its locally assembled plug-in hybrid models.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Milan Nedeljković, BMW Group’s Board Member for Production, representatives of the Thai government, and the German ambassador to Thailand Ernst Reichel.

This latest announcement by BMW Group Thailand follows a RM 137.7 million investment by Great Wall Motor, via its battery manufacturing arm SVolt; and a RM 2.3 billion investment by BYD, also to produce BEV models there.
