The Changan Uni-V is a sportback that is missing an Audi logo

If there ever is an example of frameless front grille done right it is on this Changan Uni-V sedan. The Uni-V is the first sedan/ sportback to join the Chinese manufacturer’s Uni family after the Uni-T and Uni-K SUVs. And no, it’s not an electric vehicle (EV).

Changan seems to have thrown all caution to the wind with the Uni-V’s design. The most prominent feature is of course the frameless front grille that spans almost the entire front end. The squinty headlights and foglamp housing perfectly match the grille’s angular dimensions.

The car’s shoulder lines flow into a sleek side profile where 18-inch black wheels catch the eye before letting you move on to admire the rest of the car. And when we say sleek, we meant sleek as there is not a bump in place since the Uni-V comes with hidden door handles.

In the rear-end, the taillight spans the entire rear while triangle patterns in the taillights continue the front grille’s angular appearance. The massive diffuser and double exhaust pipes are the statement pieces that declares the Uni-V means sporting intentions. Dare we say it, the rear-end gives us strong Audi A7 vibes.

The sporty theme continues inside. The interior features a flat-bottom steering wheel and an LED screen that stretches from the instrument cluster to the infotainment screen seamlessly.

All-in-all, Changan did not miss the opportunity to remind passengers that this car is meant for sporty adventures and not for the mundane business life.

At its debut, the Uni-V comes with only one powertrain and that is a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 188 PS.

No further details, such as torque figures, were released. However, Changan did announce that a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is in consideration for the near future.

Measuring 4,680 x 1,838 x 1,430 mm in length, width, and height with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, the Uni-V is only slightly larger than a Honda Civic. This is surprising considering the car looks larger than it is!

Set to go on sale in 2022, the Changan Uni-V is proof that China can also produce beautiful looking cars in a sea of boring continental sportbacks that looks the same since ten generations ago.

There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
