Following its success in Australia (100 units sold out), the 25 units of the MINI Cooper SE have been sold out in Malaysia. Launched in Malaysia less than a month ago, the electric MINI was only available in the three-door option.

The MINI Cooper SE’s price tag of RM 218,380 is lower than what we expected it to be. The attractive price could be the reason for its success in Malaysia. The BMW i3s is priced much higher than that.

Being an electric car, the road tax of MINI is charged by the amount of power output. With 184 PS, a total of RM 724 is charged for the MINI’s road tax.

The MINI Cooper SE is a city electric car with a small 29.8 kWh battery. On the WLTP cycle, the car manages 234 km of electric range. It seems there has always been demand for a short range electric vehicle as a second car.

EV enthusiasts in Malaysia are pushing for better infrastructure and better incentives for the BEV market.

Currently, electric vehicles are only charged a 10% excise tax. With Porsche bringing in three 175 kW chargers to its showrooms (Ara Damansara, Sg. Besi, & Penang), it seems there is some positive shift towards BEV cars.
