To enforce EV-only parking rules at public charging facilities, MoT proposes special number plates

Minister of Transport Anthony Loke has revealed that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is exploring various incentives to encourage the purchase electric vehicles (EVs), including the use of special number plates in addition to a revamp of the road tax structure for EVs.
“I have also told the Road Transport Department to come up with some other incentive for EV users, such as e-plates for EVs; we can have special number plates for EVs, to differentiate EVs from other vehicles. These are the things we can help to encourage the adoption of EVs,” Loke said.
The introduction of specialised number plates would also facilitate the enforcement of EV-specific benefits, such as reserved parking spaces and public charging facilities.
The exact design of the "e-plates" is yet to be decided, but options include a new number plate series solely for EVs, the addition of a letter to the existing plates as seen in Germany, or the use of a distinct green plate like in China.

The Ministry of Transport plans to reveal more details about these incentives by the end of the year, along with the new EV road tax structure.
