Volkswagen appears to be doubling-up its SUV strategy in America by releasing a couple of teaser images of its latest compact SUV which will slot below the Tiguan.
The official reveal will take place on 13-October 2020 and some speculate that the model will be based on the Chinese-market Tharu. This will also be shared with the as-yet-to-launch Tarek for the Brazilian and Latin American markets.

Some speculate that the Tarek name will be used in the Latin American markets but America might be getting a new name altogether. Maybe the Tiguan Sport but I’m doubtful that Volkswagen will call it the Tiguan Smallspace.
Also, Tarek is derived from Arabic which means path or way, not some exotic spelling of “teh tarek”.
Powering the compact SUV could be the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine that is also taken from the US-spec Jetta or a turbocharged 2.0-litre from the US-spec Tiguan according to Car and Driver.
Meanwhile, the Chinese-spec Tharu has 3 engine options available, a turbocharged 1.2-litre on top of the aforementioned engines which are mated to a 7-speed DSG.
Volkswagen has produced numerous SUVs globally in different sizes, ranging from the smaller T-Cross/Taigun/Tacqua all the way to the larger Atlas and Atlas Cross. Whether it’ll be called Tarek or Tiguan Sport, we’ll have to wait until the final release of the car in October.
