Remember the Nissan Elgrand? Before the Toyota Alphard became popular, the Elgrand was the minivan to have. Early 2000s model had a lot of street credibility too. They were rear-wheel driven, powered by a VQ35DE engine shared with the 350Z. Japan's SuperGT drivers loved it. For a period of time, Max Orido travelled between circuits in his ‘JGTC special' Elgrand.
The current generation front-wheel drive model was first launched in 2010. Between 2012 to 2016, Edaran Tan Chong Motor was selling the model in Malaysia, for around RM 388k.
The Elgrand is no longer on sale in Malaysia but it’s still available in Japan, after numerous rounds of updates. In the same 14-year period the Elgrand stayed on sale, Toyota had launched three generations of Alphard.

A new, updated 2024 Nissan Elgrand will go on sale in Japan next week. It’s still more or less the same Elgrand, but with upgraded safety features, none of them important enough to worry the Toyota Alphard.
The new 2024 Elgrand will feature an upgraded set of ‘360° Safety Assist’ driving assistance (ADAS) functions.

New for 2024 are Intelligent Emergency Brake, Pedal Misapplication Collision Prevention Assist, 360-degree Intelligent Around View Monitor (with moving object detection function), and auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
Powertrain remain unchanged, either a 2.5-litre QR25DE 4-cylinder or a 3.5-litre VQ35DE, both naturally aspirated and paired to an Xtronic CVT-M6 automatic transmission. Hybrid is still not available, thus limiting its appeal in RM 5 plus/litre petrol Japan.
Prices range from 4.08 million Yen to 5.44 million Yen (~RM 127.7k to ~RM 170.2k). That's a lot cheaper than an Alphard, which is priced from 5.4 million Yen to 8.7 million Yen (~RM 168.8k to ~RM 272.1k), thus explains how the Elgrand is still able to stay on the market after 14 years.

As before, the Elgrand is available either as a 7- or 8-seater. There’s also a 4-seater VIP edition model, built by Nissan’s vehicle customization division Autech, priced from 8.08 million Yen to 8.38 million Yen (~RM 252.6k to ~RM 262.1k).
