If the brake drum producing a "katak katak" noise when you press the brake pedal, it might be due to the brake drum has reached its life span or has uneven worn. Usually the brake shoes clearance in the drum brake is self-adjusting based on the mileage and driving behaviour (frequency of utilising the brake), mostly it will need to be opened and check at the mileage of 60k kilometer, a replacement is needed if the brake shoes thickenss is less than 0.5mm. If the brake shoes is rivet holding type, then it need to be replaced before the rivet is seen otherwise it will scratch the brake drum which might lead to a new brake drum replacement is needed. You may also determine if the brake drum has been fully utilised with the below ways:
1. Abnormal noise coming from the brake during driving, it might be the brake shoes returning spring broken, brake pad broken or fell off, brake shoes compress lock spring fell off, or brake shoes support pin loosen.
2. Abnormal noise when pressing the brake. Owner is require to press the brake when driving to determine which wheel is producing the noise. In most cases, this is due to the incorrect brake shoes contact point, brake pad quality failed, brake pad reached its wear limit. If confirmed the brake drum is faulty, suggest to check the brake drum at workshop as soon as possible.
Suggest to diagnose at workshop, usually the keypoints of diagnose are:
1. Check the brake drum. If it is the carbonize layer causing the noise, grind it off.
2. Replace the faulty or failed part, adjust the brake shoes contacting point.
3. Please take note to inspec the drum brake need some dismantling work, hence it is not advisable for owner to do it on their own, best if can engage a workshop to perform the service.
