BMW 1 Series – Overview The BMW 1 Series, as the model number suggests, is the entry model to the BMW family, slotting below the evergreen 3 Series sedan. Being developed with Germany and overall Europe in mind to compete with the Audi A3, Volvo 40-range and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the 1 Series was exclusively developed as a hatchback only and a coupe body style followed later. Another key feature of the BMW 1 Series was the driven wheels- it was the only rear-wheel drive premium hatchback and coupe for the first two generations (E87, F20). However, due to the ever-competitive nature of the hatchback segment in Europe, BMW moved to an all-new front-wheel drive platform for this current third-generation F40 BMW 1 Series. BMW Malaysia currently only offers the range-topping BMW M135i xDrive as the sole representative of the F40 BMW 1 Series range in Malaysia. The previously-popular locally-assembled F20 BMW 118i rear-wheel drive compact hatch that was priced around RM220,000 is currently represented by the all-new F44 BMW 218i Gran Coupe, also front-wheel drive. Being the top of the range as well as a M Performance model, the fully-imported BMW M135i xDrive does not come cheap, in fact, more expensive than the common 3 Series and even the 530e at RM355,646.25. Its closest competitor is the Mercedes-AMG A35 4Matic at RM366,785.05. The Renault Megane RS 300 is now priced at RM326,477 while the Audi S3 and Honda Civic Type R are not available in Malaysia.

MINI 3 Door – Overview Although MINI has a long history stretching back to the late 50s, modern MINIs only came into the story early in 2000. Currently, the iconic little car is in its 3rd generation, or Mk III, and its 3-door format is given the designation F56. This generation was introduced in 2013, and have since gone through an update in 2018 that saw engine and aesthetic changes, and then another facelift in 2021 to keep the car fresh. It’s a good move from the brand, we think, as lifestyle cars like MINI should keep up with current trends as best they can. Globally, there are 4 variants of the MINI 3 Door. They are the MINI One 3 Door, MINI Cooper 3 Door, MINI Cooper S 3 Door, and MINI John Cooper Works.  Powering the former two variants is a 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine, while a more powerful 2.0-litre turbo four-pot is used for the MINI Cooper S and MINI John Cooper Works. The engines are tuned differently, depending on their application. All variants will use a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, except the MINI John Cooper Works, which has a torque converter 8-speeder. Manual transmission for all the variants is an option in most markets, but it won’t be available officially in Malaysia. The only non-petrol variant is the MINI Electric 3 Door, which is known as the MINI Cooper SE 3 Door for the Malaysian market. Along with the electric hatch, only the MINI Cooper S 3 Door and MINI John Cooper Works are available here. There’s also a limited edition MINI John Cooper Works GP Inspired Edition for sale, although all the upgrades are merely cosmetic.

Renault Zoe – Overview The Renault Zoe doesn’t totally rewrite the formula. It looks much the same as before, largely because underneath it’s still that same car and since upgraded with more efficient motors and bigger batteries. The bigger battery and optional, more powerful ‘R135’ motor should have much the same effect. The former - a 52kWh pack that replaces the old car’s 41kWh battery which see the charging is quicker too, now that the Zoe supports DC charging up to 50kW via a CCS port hidden behind the Renault badge. Its exterior has been given a bit of a going over, but the interior is totally new with a big portrait touchscreen, more soft-touch and high-end materials that’s more, significantly more in some cases, compare with its rivals Nissan Leaf and BMW i3.
