Mercedes-Benz GLB Overview The all-new 2020 X247 Mercedes-Benz GLB has finally made its local debut here in Malaysia, joining Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s stable of SUV lineup to occupy the space between the Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover and the larger Mercedes-Benz GLC. Built on the same front-wheel-drive MFA2 (Modular Front Architecture) platform that also underpins the W177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the H247 Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 7-seater SUV gains an extra 100 mm in its wheelbase for extra practicality. Two flavours are made available for the Malaysian market, they are the GLB 200 Progressive Line and the GLB 250 4Matic AMG Line. For the keen drivers, a standalone AMG GLB 35 4Matic performance version is also available. Prices starts from RM 269,118 for the base Progressive Line and RM 318,009 for the kitted-out AMG Line. Prices are OTR without insurance and comes with a four-year unlimited-mileage warranty.

BMW X1 Series – Overview The BMW X1 Series, as the model number suggests, is the entry model to the BMW X Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) family, slotting below the X3 Series. The first generation E84 BMW X1 Series was not part of the BMW expansion plan of the SAV family, as the debuting BMW X1 was modified from an E90 BMW 3 Series wagon. It did look out of proportion unlike the BMW X5 and X3 models that were designed as SAV from group up. Similar to the product transformation of the BMW 1 Series, the new F48 BMW X1 series moved to front-wheel drive architecture after using rear-wheel drive in the first generation. BMW Malaysia currently offers two variants of the F48 BMW X1 Series range in Malaysia, the BMW X1 sDrive18i and the X1 sDrive20i M Sport. Both the vehicles are locally-assembled by BMW Malaysia. The BMW X1 is the lowest priced locally-assembled premium C-segment SUV in Malaysia, with its lower prices thanks to the EEV incentives. The BMW X1 sDrive18i (1.5-litre, 3-cylinder) is priced from RM208,368.48 and the larger engine (2.0-litre, 4-cylinder) BMW X1 sDrive20i M Sport from RM230,410.37. Its closest competitor is the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 price from RM244,199.82, the Audi Q3 from RM285,900, the Lexus UX200 from RM236,443.50 and finally the Volvo XC40 Recharge from RM241,997 which is also locally-assembled.

SUVs are supposed to be the Swiss Army Knife of cars; they can ferry people, haul large items, go off/on road and everything in between. It’s small wonder they have been catching on, and the 2021  Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 is certainly capitalizing on that. As talented as SUVs can be, there’s a rather vocal group who are quick to dismiss SUVs. They would criticize the tall ride height and additional weight as unnecessary penalization of handling and fuel economy. Ironically, I consider myself to be part of that group (or perhaps, used to) so I won’t disagree. But I am also well aware of the allure of SUVs and why they are trending. To the majority of car buyers, the added sense of security (even if it’s completely psychological), increased visibility, and extra space trump handling any time. The tall ride height may be unnecessary on tarmac, but it raises the seats to an ideal height that’s close to most adults’ hip points, so it’s minimizes the effort of getting in and out. Plus, it’s reassuring to know it can tackle mild flash floods, just like how no one needs 400 horsepower but it’s nice to know you have them under your right foot. All abovementioned advantages of an SUV are present in the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 when compared to its sedan/hatchback sibling – the Mercedes-Benz A250 . But more on that later in the interior aspect.
